In this episode, Joe explores lighting on location. He talks about assessing that location for the lighting setup.
While explaining his thought process in achieving the final product, Joe deconstructs the lighting setup of a recent location shoot. Joe teaches us how to achieve lighting that matches the character of a location.

I think these videos are excellent. I think Joe goes into great detail this way and I find i get more excited at these videos than other Adorama vid. I would like to see more of Joe's test shots, as he was building the scene. So you can see the shot evolve. Mark Wallace does this quite a bit.

I agree that seeing him actually shoot these shots could be good, but I also appreciate the diagrams, and I feel like he goes more in depth about his decision making process than he would filming this on location.

Joe's response, part 2: Firing the white light flash into the AWB rendered the skin tones reasonably well, so I just went with it. And, I always set my ISO as low as possible. Key to quality. I was on a tripod, so the shutter speed didn't faze me.

Joe McNally responds: Hi Dean…The white balance is auto. I just let if fly on an auto mode, and did not gel the strobes, as I might have normally in a fluorescent environment. As I mentioned in the video, the AWB cleans up the environment, but not too much. It is still has that industrial, warmish, bit grungy atmosphere that is true to the place.

Joe McNally responds: There is a bit of blur in Charlie's right hand, as he plays the bagpipe. I was at 1/10th of a second, on a tripod, so there were no worries about hand holding the camera. And the slow shutter speed exposes for the ambient well. And the ISO at 100 really helps the overall quality of the file.

I've used a very similar approach to shooting blacksmiths, tinsmiths and others. The small flashes work wonderfully well. Great job Joe. Thanks for the break-down of your technique.

Joe McNally responds: The AWB does a good job cleaning up the environment, but not too much. And the flash matches up with the AWB well. So I didn't use gels at all. The environment looks a bit on the grungy side, which is what I was going for.

Shutter speed captures the ambient, the strobes flash so fast shutter speed does not matter. They freeze the subject. Two questions: (1) Did you gel the strobes to manage white balance issues with the fluorescent? (2) Curious on the choice of ISO, any rationale for setting it that low?

Very nice video. I don't understand how he matches the industrial light and the strobes (red and blue). Anny suggestinso

just wondering why he choose 1/10 for the shutter speed? too slow even for getting motion blur effect imho. crankin up the iso to 400 or even 800 wont hurt for a D4 :p

Joe is a great photographer but instead of him standing in front of a white board and telling how he did the shoot, I'd prefer him actually shooting something in the video. That's more educational and fun to watch. Joe's older videos on AdoramaTV were better.

The lens is way too wide with no distortion fixing so the poor guy's face looks ugly! Also, with the shutter speed, using a "good camera" you could create a very similar effect with less flash, cranking up that ISO quite a bit, using minimal to no flash and some post. The way I see it, another unsuccessful sales pitch for adorama, not a great value you would expect from someone like McNally.

This is a weak photo for a teaching tool, I hope it doesn't represent the trend for this series. The "pool of light" seems to be awful white for a shot that intentionally left in ugly green/yellow. The shadows the wood pieces leave and the shadowed area to the pool's left(center of the photo) is really disorienting
