Two of my great aunts are sisters and live together, and are retired. They go to estate sales, antique stores, and find marketplace stuff for me in their area and have found some amazing pieces. I am so blessed, because they have all the time in the world while I don’t. And best of all is that it’s fun for them.

Hi Garrett. I couldn't agree with you more concerning window treatments. The proper drapery is part of the show, not just something covering the window so people can't see in.

I'm building an almost 10-feet long TV bench by using two IKEA Besta TV bench frames (a 3 across and a 2 across), and using a 4x8 piece of 3/4-inchprefinished birch plywood to cover it in. The lumber yard did all the cuts to create two top pieces, two side pieces and five doors. I'musing birch edge banding to cover the plywood layers along the edges of each piece. I screwed top/sides onto to the IKEA benches from the inside. and will be drilling the appropriate holes to use the IKEA hinges. $145 for the Besta frame, $90 for the plywood, $30 for the cuts, $40 for the edge banding, and $20 for a concealed hinge kit (template for the holes, plus a specialized drill bit). Plus another $40 to get longer furniture feet - both because I want something longer than what IKEA offers, and also so that it doesn't look like IKEA. My main point is that you can use something like an IKEA piece of furniture or something from Craig's List as your base and then customize it to make it completely different and far more expensive.
@marlao2317
@marlao2317 Ай бұрын
FWIW, adding the plywood also makes the TV bench far stronger than the original frames from IKEA.

@Garrett LeChic, inspired by your closing comments, here's a brief recollection for you: When I was young & living in England during my junior year in college, I met a delightful woman of similar age, named Margaret W---, who was studying at the Courtold (spelling?) Art Institute. We became good friends & one evening at her flat, she & I were sharing various cheeses & biscuits, along with a bottle of extremely inexpensive red wine she'd selected. With a tipsy yet charming laugh, Margaret raised her glass in a toast, & said in her elegant English accent, "You know, the lovely thing about Spanish plonk is--the more you drink of it, the better it gets!" ☺️🥂🍾🥂😉

Hi Garrett - I can't believe you mentioned the Sam Vimes boots theory! Yes, I'm a diehard fan of Terry Pratchett. A few weeks ago my new-to-me dining chairs arrived from Chairish. They are so beautiful I started shaking as they were brought in. Tomorrow I'm off to an estate sale with my husband.

A very good morning Garrett, Thank you for the very wonderful vlog. This is such a perfect episode for anyone who buys a house and then they have to think about the interiors and the cost associated with it, but if they watch this episode for sure they are sorted. I would like to convey that you are getting so wonderful with every episodes. Touchwood ♥️ I personally am not fond of slip covers especially if you don’t have a high ceiling but I totally understand the practicality of what you are saying. Yes one of the most expensive things that I have got done is window treatment by pulling in a designer specialised only in the drapes. It paid off very very well. Thanks to you for making me look the vintage way and yes I have collected vase and paintings and I have found a new love for vintage things and luckily I was able to educate my little family about it. The right exposure does matter. You are as usual gorgeous human and a wonderful interior designer and am so blessed to find you in this big world😍 Have a beautiful weekend and see you soon..xx

I can't describe why, but this was the most high-end feeling video I've enjoyed on this channel. Was it your sharing your own shopping experiences? The fact that the tips were real and not silly things you see on the internets like "have fresh flowers?" I don't know. But I felt like you are a designer I could work with.

We know what book you are talking about. Even if you can AfFORD it, don't bother. And, you are so right about crystal-"nobody wants it" but I always get compliments on mine. Especially about my Waterford King's Bowl. I found it at an estate sale about seven years ago as I was waiting in line to buy a $1 leather bound book.The bowl was sitting on top of a stack of pillows and sheets near the check out--$15. I got to the check out and they said "$8." Everything was half off that day. Took it to the car and went back in to buy more stuff!!! Last week, I taught my 7 y.o. nephew and 5 y.o. niece how to find a Waterford mark.

Garrett, coffee table books end up in flee markets and garage sales (husband just stated this)! Your sensible advice is welcome. I will be contacting you about design services soon even though mid century modern is not your thing - we are baby boomers and this is one design aesthetic we can agree on. I do appreciate your design aesthetic because (in my twenties) I loved Delft ( blue and white), crystal (Canadian = pinwheel), Monet (ala Impressionist = soft, dreamy office/studio art). I know that you will be fabulous and subsume your inclinations to help advise me.

Thanks so much! I work with people that like many types of design styles. My personal design style doesn’t affect how I assist others. Getting a degree in interior design has exposed me to a world of styles and design concepts. I happen to like mid century modern. In fact, I have two Milo Baughman swivel chairs in my home. I’m glad to assist with mid century modern. I look forward to a virtual consultation with you.

One trick I used was getting inexpensive curtains ($25-30 per pair) and doubling them up, i.e. putting one pair on one side of the window and another pair on the other side. There's semi-sheer, so an individual curtain looks a bit thin, but doubling them makes them look far fuller. Because I rarely close them (they're wall decor, not window treatments) since I there with shear curtain on a double rod, I haven't bothered stitching them together. I was also picky about the fabric, and kept looking I found curtains with a poly-linen blend that look pretty close to more expensive linen curtains.
