Today's decorating tutorial video is the 3rd of my series from painting with pride on lining paper. The series of tutorials is your very own how-to-guide on the best and most accurate way to putting up lining paper ready for a painted finish yourself.
This video tutorial sets out the method I use to paste the wall prior to hanging the wall paper and then hanging the paper.
Patience is the best tool you will ever own!

Thank you, finally a video I can understand. I also have to start the paper at a corner of the wall so this is very helpful for me

I like this method. However, I've just hung some 2000 grade lining paper (a very poor wall even after thorough prep) and following the instructions allowed the paper to soak up the paste for 15 mins before hanging. I think pasting the wall as well would have helped, but the paper definitely needed to soak up the paste to avoid shrinkage. Interested in your opinion/experience as I'll be hanging a great deal more in the next few months.

If you watch the first video of this series, it has all the materials I was using at the time, pasting paper and wall might be to much, shrinkage could be excessive, this method was recommended by the supplier and I never had any problems with it what so ever, worked a treat every time. Only time it could be an issue was on a chimney breast where cold/ damp air / hot / warm air is a regular occurrence and in that case you can easily just peel back the small area that lifts apply some more paste with a brush and stick back down. No big deal at all but rare it happens. The roller is a thick pile roller , that way you get a really good amount of paste of the wall Thanks for watching and best of luck with your project 👍

The video just stopped, what did you do next? Did you trim the internal corner then cut another piece on the other side to fit in so both pieces meet in the corner? Cheers

I agree, you have to paste lining paper and let it book or soak for at least 5 mins so it can expand, this will not come out well when paste dries due to expansion on the wall, i am a professional paperhanger!

But there's different types of wallpaper. This is probably the non-woven "paste the wall" type which does NOT expand, and thus does not need time to soak.

Paste the wall doesn’t expand.

I think i used 1200 on this project, If I remember rightly it might be in the first video of that series. I got the materials from brewers decorating, it was a fiber lined product. If no longer available just ask in a trade center what would be the next best or close match.. Depending on how bad your walls are, 1000 might even be ok. Kind regards

Hi thanks for making this video - do you prefer paste the wall lining paper or paste the paper lining paper? Thanks

My pleasure, I prefer the paste the wall lining paper, much less mess, hanging a pice of lining paper already soaked can get every where, and possibility of tearing from table to wall... That's my preference, also cut soon after hanging as the edges are still relatively dry, much easier to get a nice cut.

Quick question Stuart. I am about to line using a 1200 grade Erfurt red label paper. Once all done and dried I want to use Dulux polished pebble easy care to paint over it. It is an off white / slight grey. Would you recommend a mist coat first? It is a very thick paint. Thanks.

Hi John, the lining paper I use doesn't required a mist coat, just paint it on neat. Should cover in 2 coats no problem, do read the data sheet Incas it states otherwise. Good luck and kind regards 👍

Also if you got your paint from a trade supplier they are always thicker than a DIY product even if it's the same brand ... Same product!! Trade quolity is much better

The liner needs to be pasted booked then hung....I have Never pasted the wall except when I am installing 54" goods.....which also keeps the paste off drop ceiling panels in commercial applications...

Take some time to read the products application advice, I'm only doing what is advised by the company! Data sheets are different on different products!!!

Funny how all of a sudden painter's and decoraters now posting videos on KZfaq all got bright new shiny pasting tables, what ever happened to good old sagging wooden paste table or back in my day a sheet of ply on top of a couple scaffolding planks.

This video is over a year old, tools and equipment change all the time. If some one turned up to my house to do some wall papering and were using ply on scaffold planks...... I'm afraid they would be getting sent home... Does not speak volumes for the type of work I may receive! Do you still have a black and white big box like TV? Or you onto a plasma now? 🙈... Times change and we move forward. Regardless of this... Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos I hope they can help you in some way... Even if it is just giving you the opertunity to criticise something. Kind regards

@@paintingwithpride5012 no harm intended fella, I'm an old school plaster myself, used to lots of site work where anything goes. Fair comment though I to would give myself a good kick up the backside if I turned up to someone's house unprepared. All the best and keep up the good work. 👍

@@livesportsvideo03 I really appreciate that reply, I was not trying to be rude, just trying to put a different perspective on it, we all see things a different way. My grandfather is an old school cabinet maker / joiner and very few people work with that level of passion, he taught me what pride is all about and if you are going to do something to do it to the best of your ability, I just want to try and help people out, even if there are not doing the work them self's hopefully with the videos the can see what to look out for when it comes to a good job. Thanks again and best wishes

@@livesportsvideo03 i know this is a necro thread, but i am a decorator in my thirties and i inherited my old mans pasting table. Exactly as you describe, but when pasting on it, got really unstable. If your trowel got a huge dink out of it, you would definitely replace it.

Personally looking at all his gear, he definitely has all the right stuff. No crappy equipment, and all optimal for the job. Love 12 inch for paste the wall paper.
