I love that novel storyline of heavy elements including U give rise to the conditions that enabled life to take hold (volcanism and the magnetic shield from cosmic rays) and then life then provides the oxygenation to allow uranium transport and deposition sufficient for humanity to exploit which in turn helps us today to continue to protect life on earth. Love it!

Another theory says approximately 300k years after the birth of the universe the early plasma cooled to allow hydrogen atoms to form as well as a bit of helium. Gravity brought clumps of mostly hydrogen together to form first generation stars. At the center of first generation stars, pressures and temperatures fused hydrogen and helium to form heavier elements up to iron. Super novas of first generation stars provide pressures and temperatures sufficient to fuse elements up through iron into all the heavier elements including uranium.

Thanks for bringing that up; as a space geek, I always enjoy reading things like that. I have to imagine that there can't be that much uranium left in the universe that was caused that way (realatively speaking, of course). Urainum has a half-life of just under 4.5 billion years. That means that most Uranium created ~13.5 billion years ago will have decayed by now.

I’ve seen in-situ uranium mine in Wyoming. Not much to see. Open pad with some well heads and a steel building.We need fuel processing here now. Fascinating discussion of Cigar Lake mine. I need to see if there is a documentary on KZfaq about it….

I read that there is a company that is planing to extract lithium from sea water. Tha same process can extract uranium from sea water. If true then uranium is inexhaustible or fuel for at least 3000 years. The Japanese have done work on this extracting uranium from sea water.

IIRC, the fuel costs are something like 5-10% of the cost of using nuclear power. I've also heard that it would be 4x more take uranium from the water than to mine from the ground. I'm not sure if that 5% includes the enrichment process or not, but if it does, than the cost of mining is much less than that 5%. Short answer is, yes; we *can* source uranium from the ocean's without hurting nuclear's cost effect EDIT: you wrote EROI (Engergy Return on Investment). I think I may have attempted to answer the wrong question. Iocean-sourced uranium *will* return more electricity than it puts out. The 4x figure I read was actually referencing energy demands, IIRC (so I was extrapolating that for costs). Since you get an absolutely massive EROI from nuclear, I think a 4x energy cost for mining it would be negligible.

Conversation on Uranium was so so booooring. What wasn’t mentioned was at what point in the extraction, milling and enrichment process of Uranium did its radioactivity become dangerous to living cells. Also NPP’s produce electricity and Globally only ~20% from all energy sources is energy provided by electricity, and currently only ~2% of that is provided from alternative energy (non FF’s) sources, of which Nuclear is one, leaving FF’s supplying ~80% for industrial and domestic heating, transport, industrial feedstock etc and its other uses too numerous to mention. So Nuclear energy is not a panacea to humanity’s problems as a replacement for the FINITE resources of Coal, Oil and Gas, and that’s leaving out Nuclear’s costs, delivery, safety/security and disposal of toxic radioactive waste🤔

Yeah, the Decouple group is pretty stuck on conventional nuclear which is only good for making electricity. However, they were at least positive about "advanced" non-water reactors at 54:00. Generation IV reactors all have a much higher output temperature which will have more demand as direct industrial heat than for making electricity. First to market will probably be Terrestrial Energy's MSR and their first customer wants the industrial heat, not electricity.
