Reactors! Waste pools! Control rooms! Oh my!
A VIP tour of the plant that delivered North America’s largest-ever emissions reduction, when Ontario replaced coal with #nuclearpower. Our guide is Control Room Operator Dan Campbell, who went from operating N.America’s largest coal plant, Nanticoke (RIP), to operating its largest nuclear plant, Bruce Power.
The world of #climateaction is always asking for #sustainable replacements to fossil fuels that work at scale. Well, Ontario is one of just a few electrical grids in the world that successfully replaced fossil fuels and it did it with homemade Candu reactors, and a little emotional support from Drake and Justin Bieber.

Great video I enjoyed it. I am a retired Nuclear Engineer. There is a small inaccuracy in the discussion that I would like to clarify. Heavy water is not used because it has a much higher boiling point than normal water. It does have a higher boiling point, about 1 degree C, but that is unimportant. It is easy to keep water from boiling simply by putting it under higher pressure. The primary reason heavy water is used as a moderator is because it is less likely to absorb a neutron then normal water is. With more neutrons available to cause a chain reaction, heavy water can allow unenriched uranium to be used while still allowing a chain reaction to be maintained. Other plants (PWRs and BWRs) that don't use heavy water (which is very expensive) must enrich their uranium in the U235 isotope in order to be able to maintain a chain reaction.

Adding to this, the engineer above is 100% correct, and what is also interesting is you should look up the Oklo natural reactor. 2B years ago the ratio of U235 to U238 was higher, much closer to the 4%+ we see in the "light water" reactors, such as those used in the US. In order to use "regular" light water, you have to have a higher ratio of fissile fuel, ie more U235. Back 2B years ago, an area with lots of natural uranium flooded and resulted in a natural nuclear reactor. It can't happen anymore. If you want a reactor you have to either enrich the uranium, or use heavy water so you stop wasting so many neutrons.

yes and this is why the candu is able to use natural uranium and depleted fuels from other reactors as opposed to enriched fuels. Its also removes proliferation from the mix as enrichment is not required so the fuel is not desired as weapons grade fuel. The candu does have a positive void coefficient similar to soviet RBMK however the moderator choices and control rod configuration almost make it negligible and make it much much safer, while still allowing active refueling.

Liked! But it isn't that *_easy_* to get a pressure high enough for a temperature to drive the highest efficiency wind turbines. The standard CanDU runs at 310 °C, but there's a design with an oil coolant that does much better. The PWR needs about 150 atmospheres. Its designer, Alvin Weinberg, solved this problem with his Molten Salt Reactor design in which the coolant itself carries the fuel. It is inherently meltdown-immune, because the entire reactor circuit has a plug of solid fuelsalt, that will melt and dump the fuel into a basin that extinguishes the reactivity. It also solves the two problems of ceramic solid uranium oxide, the temperature of the is equal to the coolant's , and the nuisance fission product Xe-135 is a gas that is collected in the inert gas argon at the surface.

The general public is ignorant to nuclear power and its safety. The heavy water moderated candu reactors are incredibly safe and reliable. Also thought bruce was the second largest plant in the world. Wish they would do some nuclear here in manitoba but they are obsessed with state owned hydro. The fact that these reactors can use natural uranium as fuel as well as depleted fule from presurized light water reactors amongst others makes them very versitile.

I enjoyed the video. It was like a trip down memory lane as I worked at Bruce A as an operator for almost 10 years back in the 70’s and 80’s. At that time, the RL Hearn power plant was decommissioned and many of the staff moved to Bruce A and Pickering A/B. The Hearn was originally coal fired and was a large contributor to smog as it lays on Toronto’s waterfront. Scrubbers and a huge smokestack were added to reduce the impact the pollution but it wasn’t enough so it was converted to burn natural gas. After being decommissioned in 1983, it sat vacant for a long time but was eventually became a popular location for the film industry. I wouldn’t be surprised if Drake and Bieber have filmed music videos there. I hope that Japan and Germany return to nuclear power and an alternative for coal and natural gas.

I remember going to Toronto in the 90s and 2000's. We lived in north eastern Ontario in a small town and our air was extremely clean. You could see the air quality difference even with the windows up. Once you got out you could smell and see the difference in the air. You couldn't see the CN tower even from the top of the drop zone at wonderland. I went to wonderland a few years back and I could actually see the city, it was amazing.

But where's the final resting place of all that radioactive waste?
@decouplemedia
@decouplemedia Жыл бұрын
Very good question. There are a number of answers, most of them involve burying it. We recently filmed at the potential long-term site in Ontario and there will be episodes on waste coming up both on the podcast and here on Decouple Studios in the coming months. For now I would say that nuclear waste storage is a challenge, but it is a lesser and lower-risk challenge than the waste challenges of other energy sources. For example, much better to have a small amount of waste stored deep in a solid, stable bed of rock with little-to-no chance of it ever escaping, than to have an enormous amount of waste up in the air transforming our climate and causing preventable illnesses.

@@decouplemedia I think having some fun totally works. I like and enjoyed the idea. It also depends on your audience right? Myself I was super excited for some Bruce Power / Mighty CANDU action. Then a bit dissapointed with the Bieber/Drake stuff, I wanted more CANDU. Also there was some serious stuff in here regarding a just transition and radiation exposure. But now we can't really use this video if we want to share it to discuss those issues, because it takes such a strange tangent. Now that I'm thinking about it. I think the Bieber / Drake stuff should've been it's own video. It could've been a "conspiracy theory" investigation ala Ancient Aliens. Essentially a lot of silly tongue in cheek fun contained in one video. Also if it's intended to be a stepping off stone for people that are more interested in Drake than nuclear, it would be ideal for that audience. That audience I'm guessing would care less about a nuclear reactor operator. But yeah, keep on injecting some fun. There is no reason for anything discussing nuclear to be stuffie and boring.

Excellent production, Jesse! I knew some of the story of Bruce, but the Drake and Bieber backstory was a bit of an unknown and an under appreciated component of the revival.🤣. Looking forward to seeing your next video!

Gary you are doing the world a favour expanding people's understanding of rooftop Renewables. Central generation is an economic nightmare for the future. When you think it through. 'Monkeys' or roofers can install solar panels. Every building on the planet has a roof. Roofers can not run nuclear electric generators. Super duper safe nuclear reactors are too expensive to allow low trained operators. So millions of safe nuclear electric generators will need 3shifts every day of the years including weekend, public holidays, sick leave, training days, emergencies back up staff. Highly paid and scarce nuclear staff. The extra generators will need extra national grid capacity. More costs. Grids TRIPLES the cost of new generators. No fossil fuels QUINTUPLES (×5) the number of generators. Roof Monkeys look extremely cheap even if you put extra on your roof. Electric vehicles will be parked 23hrs every day as usual and have a battery big enough for the all day drive when needed. Billions and billions of massive battery storage at every building, and billions building connected to the existing national grids. The existing national grid is massively UNLOADED as it does not have to distribute to the billions of ends of the grid. Nuclear is a decades and decades to build solution and will be the stranded asset nobody will be able to turn off or demolish for 100years. FMD. Nuclear deal. Nuclear electricity needs government disaster guarantees and cash flow guarantees and renewables suppression by government government grid building expansion. Military budgets exploding. Taxation increasing to cover government spending.

Your title is not right. The actual biggest plant in the world is in Korea. And one precision. In operation refueling was made to produce plutonium during the atomic bomb development run. Maybe that's the largest plant in number of reactors but have more powerful reactors that this kind of units. Did you tell how much electric power is rated one of the reactor in this powerplant ?

What about water ? Nuclear reactors must be permanently cooled using a cooling circuit supplied with cold water drawn from the sea or from rivers near the facilities. The cooling of nuclear power plants is the first item collected and the third source of freshwater consumption in France (I don't know about US and Canada), behind agriculture and drinking water. This consumption of water, which is essential for the operation of nuclear reactors, is all the most worrying in a context of climate crisis where conflicts around the use of water have already erupted and will get even worse. Extreme climatic events, and in particular the long periods of drought, multiply and cause an increase in the temperature of watercourses and the drop in flow of rivers. This poses a significant threat to the capabilities of cooling down a reactor. Most of the water withdrawn to cool the reactors is then returned to the watercourse, but at a temperature much warmer than that of the withdrawal. This supply of hot water has significant and often insufficiently considered effects on local biodiversity.
