I had to watch the iello video a few times to "get it". You and your team have secret words (but unlike Codenames, this isn't the objective. The objective is figuring out the other team's "number order"). You first give 3 clues to tell your team the 3 out of 4 words that we are playing with. If the words are 1. Galaxy 2. Apple 3. Canada 4. Spy...and you like 1.3.4., your clue could be "Ship, Hockey, and Secret". The other team never sees your secret words but they do have a sample to work with. They now write down 1=Ship, 3=Hockey, 4=Secret. Now you will have the number order to tell your team. You want your team to guess it (two errors means you lose) but you don't want the opponents to guess it (two steals from them, and they win)...If the number order is 3.4.1. (Canada, Spy, Galaxy) and you NOW say, "Drake, Ninja, Stars"...the other team may be able to correctly guess "3.4.1." by taking this new clue and looking at their notes. Easy game...but not easy to explain...I did my best...

Normally Zee does a great job at giving a feel for the game. I don't know if it's just me, but I just cannot get the gist of this game.

Eric Odenheimer this is a really cool party game. played it at Essen. totally kills Codenames for me (which is not that difficult as I never much liked the game in the first place). But I have to agree it was a rather confusing explanation by Zee (which is very unusual for him) and therefore maybe undersells the simplicity but clever fun of this cool game a bit. Anyhow, the game is explained in minutes and plays fast with much less downtime as CN.

Despite Decrypto is a very simple game to play (maybe 1-2 rules more than Codenames), its gameplay is not intuitive. The pitch itself is not simple to understand... until you played 1 or 2 rounds (not games... ;) This is why you might be a little bit confused after any explanation (even mines, sometimes, and I am the publisher!!!)

I haven't a scoobie who knows what regarding the words the clue giver is aiming at.

Eric: That's almost word-for-word of what I was thinking. I understand the objective of the game, I just have zero concept of how you actually achieve that objective. Why do you want your clues to be obscure but not too obscure? What the what?

This is a game where once it clicks - it shines. It took a while for us to get the feel for the game, but once we did, it easily kills Codenames for me.

I don't know why everyone wants to compare this to codenames. They are both deduction word games but are each fun in different ways. To me, this game is just a little more accessible than codenames is. If someone is REALLY smart with words than they can absolutely destroy in codenames. General word knowledge can really shine there. Word knowledge is important in Decrypto too but the added mechanic of stealing the other teams code makes it interesting. And I don't really consider codenames a party game, it's more of a strategy game to me. Decrypto on the other hand is definitely a true party game. I really like them both.

yeah he did an awful example of explaining it. the best way to get this game is to just watch people play, it's pretty easy once you see it

For Speed I would have done “Bus”, “Cruise” was Speed 2. 😁

does the whole team see the 4 secret words and then the encryptor give clues in the order of the code numbers related to the code words? thats the bit that doesnt make sense.

Yes, your whole team sees the secret words. And he gives clues in order of the code. But the team doesn't get to see the code. They have to use the clues themselves to guess the order. I learned this after seven read throughs and two instructional videos. It's not an easy game to explain.

So, it's like Dixit with words, but with specific people you are trying to make sure don't guess correctly. Might be a little too difficult to explain quickly and might lose people during the reading of the rules.

I really wish this game didn't have the stupid gimmick of the red film. just give a shield and bold black/white high contrast cards with the words on them. This thing can be hard as heck to read in poor lighting conditions which is pretty much any time I ever play a party game.

You might have lost a few potential players during the overview, the explanation was lacking. To be fair, it's a difficult game to explain.
