Dee Gordon’s emotional home run for Jose Fernandez deserves a deep rewind

When Jose Fernandez passed away unexpectedly, the Marlins and all of MLB were stunned. Ahead of their next game, Miami did all they could to honor their pitcher throughout the night, but Dee Gordon's leadoff at-bat was the most memorable.
Facing Bartolo Colon and the Mets on September 26th, 2016, the Marlins weren't worried about the playoffs that were technically still in contention for. For the last 36 hours, they had been working through their grief, and finally had the opportunity to show their love for Fernandez. Once the pre-game memorials were done, Dee Gordon had one last act in store. Welcome to a moment in history.

@@Wolf813921 The man's character was great. He had made several poor mistakes leading to his and others deaths, but he was someone who meant well. He was a damn good ball player and a good person, who had a tragic ending. He shouldn't be remembered in negative thoughts. Everyone makes mistakes, more than others. Mental Health can effect anyone, even if they seem like Superman. You don't have to approve what happened and be ok with it. You're not suppose to, but you can't act like he is God awful and never had a positive effect on the sport of baseball and the community he served.

Bartolo Colon officially gained my respect that day. That was a middle middle, flat fastball well below his top velocity. He served that pitch to Dee hoping he'd hit it out. That's a real moment.

I was at this game. I filmed Gordon’s entire at bat. From the time he was in Jose’s spot to when he hit the homerun and went back to the dugout. It was a very emotional moment for everyone in that stadium. Jose meant so much to this team, but more importantly this community. Jose is still missed by many of us down here in Miami. There will never be another Jose. RIP Jose Fernandez

In a wild card race, the Mets showed great respect to Fernandez. Cespedes put up his jersey himself and was very emotional. Colon gave up the runs by throwing cookies. As a Mets fan I was proud of that day because we showed that the game is more than winning.

Every real baseball fan can feel the emotion behind Fernandez and his story. Incredible talent, one of the greatest raw pitching talents I've ever seen, I'm a Detroit fan I watched Verlander from his rookie year develop and Jose definitely had that star quality. His passion on the mound and just in general was awesome to watch he had such an electric and magnetic personality on the field smiling and having fun but at the same time highly competitive and aggressive on the mound pure stuff this guy was no joke his 2seamer and slider combination was dominant velocity movement and control he was sure to be hof'er just needed more years. So sad that he never got to hold his baby 😭

I remember when this happened and it was the most heartbreaking thing that had happened to baseball in my time. Jose was a beautiful young soul with a great smile and loved to play the game and support the people closest to him. It's such a shame what happened. I was in Miami a couple days before Jose Fernandez passed (ironically for my grandma's funeral) and I went to a Marlins game. I bought a Jose Fernandez jersey because my last name is also Fernandez and I thought it was cool. While I was waiting at the airport to return, the TVs all had breaking news announcing his death. I was absolutely shocked and saddened. But I now wear that jersey in big moments to honor him 😭😭😭

I firmly believe that if Jose didn't pass away, the Marlins would be a great team right now. He was coming into his own as one of the Top 5 pitchers in all of baseball, Giancarlo Stanton would continue to do great things, Dee Gordon is still a reliable starter, and Christian Yelich, JT Realmuto, and Marcel Ozuna were all rising stars playing on the same team at the time. When Jose died, all the momentum the Marlins had built in the previous few years died with him. There's not many people in baseball who has such a lovable personality and were as talented as Jose Fernandez. Rest In Peace. I also think it's disgraceful that the Marlins organization hasn't retired his #16 yet....

i remember watching sportscentre, watching highlights of marlins, watching all of those incredible sliders. When he died i felt terrible. I dont watch baseball anymore, but, i will always miss him, him and his passionate play.

I am 35 years old and I've been watching baseball for as long as I can remember. Jose had some of, if not the nastiest stuff I have ever seen in my lifetime. I'm not even a Marlins fan and I got his jersey after his rookie year. He was something special. Great job on the video.

I am a life long met fan Spanish decent. Jose story touched me so much, i saw the joy Fernandez had going into every start i would root for him no matter the team he was pitching against watching Dee Gordon at bat still and will always give me chills. Jose brother i hope you find peace in the after life we love and miss you I’m so sorry you never got the chance to live life. Watching that ball leave the park i had tears on my face this moment is the most beautiful moment in baseball history. After the announcement of his passing I bought a Fernandez jersey still my favorite to this day

Cpage 105 one of my favorite Jose Fernandez highlights. Another one when he was in the dugout a half inning after giving up a bomb to Evan Longoria and yelled out to Longoria that he didn’t have to hit it so far, and Longoria joked back that that ball was right there, so he just swung and it went.

The pain never goes away. Watching this touching video brought back feelings of sadness that still feel as fresh as it did on that September morning. David Samson was a stooge for Jeffrey Loria, but he's right on one thing. Jose's memory will never be forgotten. Rest in power, ace.
