Incredible, powerful track in every way. Just a note: the artist on this video should be labelled 'Rhoda Dakar with The Special AKA', rather than 'Specials'. 'The Boiler' was written and performed by Rhoda and The Bodysnatchers a couple of years before this version with The Special AKA was recorded.

I’m really glad this song captivated such a serious event. It wasn’t romantasized or dramatized, just a story that very well could have happened. It shows this event from the perspective of the victim, something a lot of people don’t understand, and I really appreciate it, as someone who’s never gone through it myself, but is very close to several people who have. To anyone out there who has lived through this kind of situation, you are valid and I believe in you. It isn’t your fault and never will be. I know it doesn’t matter much, but just note that even if no one in your life has your back, I do. 💙

It's very powerful. I wonder if this track helped give Terry Hall the courage to write the equally harrowing Well Fancy That on Fun Boy Threes Waiting album the following year. Which also tells the story of a rape (the rape of a child by a trusted adult) in a straightforward and unflinching way also from the victims pov. While Rhoda was telling a story of what happened to a friend of hers, sadly Terry was singing about his own rape. No one was having these conversations in 1982 and 1983, two incredibly brave and powerful songs which show different ways victims can react. Terry laying frozen not being able to shout or scream just as disturbing as those piercing screams. I truly believe rape is the worst crime a person can commit.

+Elle Worsfold I was 17 at the time and I bought it just to hear what the fuss was about because it was - hardly surprisingly - banned from the radio. It spent 2 weeks in the Top 40 in January/February 1982. Well made as it was,I've never played it since that year or not long after because the subject matter is so uncomfortable, especially the screams at the end which is horrible to hear. I'm about to play it for the first time since then; I knew for a while it was coming up as I'm on a gradual chronological trawl gradually through the popular music of my college days. By ridiculous contrast the next single on the list after it is The Lion Sleeps Tonight (!),followed by a long-forgotten minor Stevie Wonder hit,Haircut 100 and Pigbag just to underline the randomness of it; immediately before The Boiler it was Japan,Daryll Hall and John Oates,XTC's Senses Working Overtime (great to hear that one again for the first time in donkeys' years),Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark,Gillan,George Benson and Stiff Little Fingers.

This song was PROHIBITED from being released for some years in the 80s. It raises the issues which have not been portrayed or discussed that openly (during the previous decades) which was one of rape! It seems that NO RECORD LABEL was prepared to actually consider this for their concern. But Janet Street Porter produced & presented a yewf affairs programme about the R word. It was the first time that SHE presented this song, as something to illustrate HOW FAR the British Establishment was prepared to keep such matters under wraps. Sad really, on many counts, that it got released too long after it was first recorded!

It was released and actually got to number 35 in the charts in early 1982 despite being banned from radio play. Very brave of them to cover such a subject, and pulls no punches in its harrowing nature. She does it brilliantly and it's lost none of its impact.
