Hello, hello! This was a requested video to discuss how I translate my thoughts into visuals for my films. I talk you through the conventions using comic books, and share some storyboarding exercises to help you begin visualizing your film!

+Nokkinator Hahaha awww what a compliment!!! My family is actually full of teachers (grandparents were head masters) and my mom is a very unconventional prof! So I think it's safe to say it's in my blood :D

What brilliant advice!! Oddly a lot of it is really similar to the process of making art so there's elements where it clicked really well! Absolutely love your idea of thumbnailing a movie, I did that for "Song of the sea" for a few scenes before and learnt absolutely loads. You've just made me realise I could totally do that with picture books that I admire too, since that's my line of work LOL. Amazing, amazing, amazing!!

+Doodle Date Eeee I always get so excited when I receive a notification from you!! I still need to see 'Song of the Sea'! It received such great reviews :D I love using flashcards for storyboards, but once I dropped them(!!!) and lost one of them and the order was completely messed up hahah. Learned to keep them in an elastic band and number them on the back once I determined the order. Scanning and compiling takes a bit of time, but I think the exercise of keeping the order loose really helps make the best choices for the story in the end! Thank you for the constant stream of kind words!!! :')

Oh no the horror of dropping and losing them makes me cringe LOL, I freak out when I lose a sheet of my storyboards since that'll be like half the entire thing! And I couldn't recommend Song of the Sea enough, it quickly turned into our all-time fav animated movie ^__^ xx

Also I mega owe you for the ideas of storyboarding with sticky notes/ cutting them out on paper. I always do them verrry linear drawn on 1 sheet of paper and it's such a horrible process trying to get a natural flow. You've saved my life hahaha!

Some interesting points. Thank you for sharing. The story boarding is so important. The action of just 'doing it' helps ideas materialise.

+Anisa Hussein Awesome, so glad to hear that!! I know it's easy to find tons of videos on storyboarding, and Pixar has great ones - but wow - they are wildly intimidating to watch! Hahah. So I was hoping my charming stickmen wouldn't intimidate people into not trying :-D Is there anything you'd like to request?

+Projection Room Comic books are so helpful! :D Sometimes I forget to focus on the compositions though, and I end up blazing through the comic because I just read the speech bubbles haha. I'd love to see how the exercise turns out if you get to do it! Thank you for the kind words!! :)

Hi, I just discovered your channel. I really enjoyed this video, you gave some great insight, tips and advice. I've always been interested in film but I don't have enough confidence in my skills and ideas. After watching this though, I really want to turn on a camera and just have fun with it:) Keep your videos coming!

+karmoose Thank you!!! I'm SO glad to hear that - that's awesome!! We all start not so great, which is totally cool, it's practice and more practice that gets us closer to where we'd like to be :D I learn TONS from each new video/film that I make, and I always look back on previous work and feel embarrassed. But that's a sign that you're growing and learning! :) Have fun making!!

this was so helpful! I tried to make a short film last year with my friends and I didn't even think about story boarding! and tbh the end result was very boring and there wasn't anything exciting, and I just know that if I spent more time composing the shots and paying attention to detail it would have been loads better. in this video as well straight away I was drawn to the hookah lit in red in comparison to the yellow, great job on that, btw! my questions for lighting are how can I make it subtle enough to be seen and understood but not overpowering? also how often can I use intense lighting contrasts in the same shot, say red and blue together in a five minute film? grand video as always, Deena!
@deenapie
@deenapie 9 жыл бұрын
+Aida Deyes I always think of storyboards as the first round of shots for the film! So it's like you get a viewing before you've even made the film, and it helps clear a lot of confusion up once you hit the set. It can be quite time-consuming to figure out a solid storyboard sequence (I've spent weeks on them!), but I think it ultimately ends up saving more time than having to reshoot, and that's super worth it :) So happy that you picked up on the contrast between the objects in the background! It took me a while to set them up haha. I'll definitely address your questions in the next video; those are great q's! Thank you so much for the comment, made my night!! xx
