Today, I'm taking an in-depth look at one of the toughest shots in squash: the deep backhand from an open stance. This shot, crucial for retrieving balls in the mid to back service box area, requires skill and technique. I'm going to explore this from three different camera angles to really understand the mechanics.
👣 Footwork Focus: First, we'll compare the foot angles and steps required for this shot. Proper foot placement is key for effective hitting and balance.
🤲 Wrist Control: A recurring theme in my coaching is addressing the 'wobbly wrist'. This video will highlight the importance of wrist stability throughout the swing.
🏌️‍♂️ Swing Phases: We’ll dissect the swing into three phases - the initial position, the trigger movement, and the contact point. I'll demonstrate how each phase contributes to a successful shot.
🔄 Body Mechanics: Observe how my student and I differ in our body positioning and movement. We'll focus on the engagement of legs and hips and the importance of leaning into the shot for better control.
🔍 Comparative Analysis: By examining our shots side by side, we'll identify key differences in technique and execution, emphasizing areas for improvement.
🎯 Racket Positioning: I’ll stress the importance of keeping the racket in the optimal position and how this affects the shot's trajectory and power.
👀 Visual Focus: We'll discuss the importance of keeping your eyes on the ball and how prematurely looking at the front wall can impact your shot.
🔄 Recovery Movement: Pay attention to how we both move off the ball, highlighting the importance of a proper follow-through and recovery step.
I hope this detailed breakdown helps you grasp the nuances of this challenging shot. Don't forget to share this video, subscribe for more tips, and click the link in the description for your free personalized swing audit.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing your improvement. Until next time, keep practicing and see you on the court!

As a level 2 coach, I appreciate all the content you are putting. Do you have any tips/drills/practices for sorting out wobbly wrist with juniors. Or how you go about teaching the swing to juniors.

Great analysis. In view 2 from the side wall, just curious about the difference in left hand positioning. Any significance?

You have no idea how much I’m trying to not “brake” the wrist like your student. Do you have any tools to focus/concentrate on the right movements? Like mindfulness orchestra something similar
