Couple of bits I didn't mention. I repeated the cleaning and washing stage several times to work through the grime making sure all was rinsed thoroughly before leaving to dry. Hopefully one day we will get to the restoration side of things. Check out Opus Tile Restoration on FB and IG for some pro info and before and afters! 👌

Love, it; so satisfying to watch things being maintained, renewed, held on to, given a new lease of life! (Especially in our ‘throw away’ culture). Your attitude to restore things and look after them reminds me of my late Grandparents, who also had a very similar floor to this in their pantry. 👍👏

It seems that many people have some sort of memory involving old tiles. I seem to remember queuing up in a tiled hall for school dinners at primary school! 😂

I stencilled the pattern of our encaustic tiles on the section of concrete. Many years ago (1940's) heating was put in and steel pipes put under the floor. A large area of concrete was left which looked awful. So I stencilled the existing pattern onto the concrete and it looks great. The house was built before 1840 and the tiles are original.

From what I understand Tile Tessellation are laid on a bed of "wet mortar" with tiles abutting one another. which means that you lay the bedding material and start laying tiles because if the bedding material dries you rip up all the work and start again. Only saw it once on a TV renovation show where a tiler was laying a tessellate pattern on a front entrance porch, dont know if the tile layer was accurate in what he was saying or doing but he did a great job it just looked stunning.

This is the video I've been waiting at least two years to see!! Love that floor! I tried to get those patchwork tiles but could not find them in Canada and would not buy from the states. Ended up having my tile setter cut patchwork shapes to my design from the large tiles we floored with, for a modernized black/white/grey take on the style, and we put an inlaid patchwork "tile rug" at each entry door. (Soaring labour cost but I love the result) I hope you're able to find tiles to fill in the other areas, it'll be a fussy job but will look fantastic. In the meantime, I wonder whether you could get some paint matched, and just stencil the patchwork pattern onto those concrete bits... Wouldn't a quilted wall hanging or throw in the same pattern and colours look great in one of the sitting rooms. But maybe leave that to Jo, eh? You have mad skills with everything except the sewing machine. I almost yelled at my screen...

I know, its such an overdue project so nice to have at least made a start! I do think that its worth making an effort with the entrance and hall, after all many visitors only see a room or two. We have a sisal runner that fits over the other half just fine for now, unfortunately I think the concrete patches are not really smooth enough to do anything effective with paint. Wall hanging would be good, we picked the wall paint to match the blue triangles actually.

Hi there I recently pulled up 3 layers of vinyl flooring in my kitchen(recently bought) 🤢to find the original quarry stone tiles underneath about 200 years old. I have the exact same issue as you where they used to have a Matt in the floor it really bugs me but I just cover it amazing how much a bit of sealer makes a massive difference you done a really good job well done keeping it original 👍🏼

I actually filmed a whole segment of me explaining exactly that idea. We we planning to create a well for a carpet/mat as until now we have always had one there anyway just in case the kids every slipped on the stairs! We did count them a few years back and there was almost enough so definitely an option... just not doable in my two day snagging marathon!

If you have to reset the mechanism of the sewing machine after botching it up with a very thick material, a 'how to' video would probably be appreciated. There aren't many decent ones and some sewing machine maintenance isn't that difficult if you have some guidance. Not that I've had a bad experience.

Wow a Karcher product that lasted long enough to complete a job! Surprised the battery didn’t die after 5 minutes or the product simply fall to pieces which is what has happened every time I have bought one of their crap pieces of equipment including 5 of those window vacs that all refused to recharge.. Apart from that interesting video.
