Deep Cleaning Iwata Neo Airbrushes

This is a short tutorial on breaking down and cleaning the Iwata Neo airbrush. I have 2 Iwata Neo's, I use them a lot, but eventually they get clogged with dried paint. This video shows the process I use to restore them.

Could you use acetone to clean

You can, just make sure that you take out any little rubber gaskets or plastic seals because there are some inside of it. Acetone melts acrylic paint but it also melts plastic and rubber.

What do you use for thinner? I have this Testors Glosscote, Top Coat and I tried to use acetone as a thinner and it got gummed up I am new to airbrushing and have no clue what to use as a thinner. Thanks Great Vid

Personally I like Aztec, Model Masters brand the best. You can find it at Hobby Lobby. I've had really good luck with everything Vallejo for modelling too. Acetone can melt gaskets though. If you're trying to thin enamel I recommend odorless mineral spirits. I like Windsor Newton's the best. I actually don't use the airbrush for varnishing models though because it seems like it likes to gum things up. I just use the aerosol cans for top coat and use the airbrush for painting.

I was using 100% acetone (nail polish remover) on a Badger 105. Bad idea... Now have the Neo...

I cheappe out and and bought a master air brush thinking that having rebuilt my share of carburetors I could easily handle an airbrush from what I’ve seen, my critical error was buying a cheap a$$ airbrush when I should’ve bought an iwata

Iwata's are great. My favorite brands are Grex, Iwata, and Harder and Steenbeck.

I thought you aren't supposed to clean airbrushes with ammonia

Yeah I've heard that. I think it can corrode the chrome or something. Personally I've never had that problem. I think it's more soaking parts in it, not just running it through the airbrush. But you can get glass cleaner without ammonia. I knew a guy who had one of those airbrush t-shirt places and he cleaned his airbrushes with glass cleaner every day without issue. I think the best daily cleaner would probably be a mix of ammonia free glass cleaner and denatured or isopropyl alcohol though. That could be a good video, mixing your own daily airbrush cleaner. That way you wouldn't have to deal with the bubbles as well from glass cleaner foaming up.
