I had a great conversation with Mike from the China Guitar Sceptic channel! Here we talk about Chinese guitar manufacturing, stigmas against it and how they are changing, plus the overall perception of the quality of guitars from different countries. This was a fascinating conversation that I really enjoyed having and I'm very happy to bring it to you.

This is true for 20 years ago, but not 60 years and beyond. A lot of valid points made in this video that I support and that deserve a continued discussion going forward. On the same coin however, they speak as if the past didn't exist haha. A skilled craftsman is a skilled craftsman, regardless of geographical location (this notion is finally starting to be generally accepted). Nobody is at 100% all of the time, and this is especially true for people in a highly competitive job market, toiling to meet a quota and/or performing a repetitive task all day long. In instances such as these, quality control, streamlined production, and advanced modern manufacturing technologies are pertinent to ensure the success and proper caliber of the finished product. All of which were common issues that the majority of "overseas" factories faced until 5 or so years ago. It's not that these factories couldn't make top tier instruments. The concern was mainly "can they consistently produce quality high tolerance instruments?" and "Is the one I ordered a stud or a dud?". The internet, as well as connectivity in general, has also been a major factor in ushering in the age of high quality/ low cost instruments. You can no longer rest solely on the laurels of an accomplished name brand... if you make and sell a shit product, everyone is just a click away from knowing that it's shit. Likewise, this environment has made it possible for start-ups with terrible names (i.e. Harley Benton) to thrive by producing instruments high value/low cost instruments, sans the frivolity of well established and archaic "household name" companies.

Very good, correct and honest discussion. As a Vietnam Vet, I experienced Asian culture first hand in 1970. Over the period of my twenties I saw the Japanese government, in collaboration with American industrialists, copy, modify and develop manufacturing techniques which were second to none. Here we ignorant Americans sit, with our images of sweatshops and primitive work conditions fed to us by the government to make us feel content. LOL...While the rest of the world looks to Asia for the most innovative and creative manufactured products the world has ever offered consumers.

Great video Max. The idea of "American exceptionalism" has infiltrated the guitar market, and influences buyers. That's why American guitars are so overpriced. And why people will pay a premium price for them. The Chinese guitar makers can build inexpensive guitars because the cost of living is much less. It's not "slave labor" as some uneducated people insist on stating here on KZfaq.

I agree with everything that was said, except the PRS part about never letting an imperfect guitar leaving the factory. I bought a Dave Navarro signature and there was visible wood glue around the neck and body, came not setup, and the neck was warping because they didn’t let the wood thoroughly dry. However, they did take it back and set a new one that was perfect out of the box.

@RickMcCargar
@RickMcCargar 5 жыл бұрын
It's because it takes years to develop skills and factory quality. When Japan first started making consumer electronics after WWII, they were often literally made in people's homes. My now-deceased business partner worked with a Japanese man to build TVs, transistor radios and later home stereos. They taught one block of people to assemble tuner circuits, another to frequency converters, another the chassis, etc. Naturally quality was terrible, but the price was very low because those workers required very little money to buy clothes, food etc. As the Japanese economy improved, factories were built, people trained to work in a production environment. As time went on they moved from producing cheap crap to high quality products. When the cost of doing business and end product prices went up in Japan, production moved to other countries like China, India and others and the same process repeated minus the home-built part. I spent years building a semiconductor design and manufacturing company with facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. I started visiting China in the first decade after Nixon opened up trade with China. At the time, 95% of all Chinese were peasants. We built their factories, we trained them etc... People remember the time in which the product was low-quality and low-price, and don't necessarily stay up with the advancements as they're made. It's consumer ignorance more than anything else edit: there is one other point to be made though, over the years, we allowed our manufacturing to be moved to low-cost countries and in so doing lost millions of high-paying factory jobs...in effect, we traded our good jobs for cheap crap from other countries. When you think "I'm saving a ton of money on a guitar", you don't think about the depressed wages here in the U.S. because those jobs are now gone. You saved money on that guitar at the expense of having better pay. Was it a good trade? Not for everyone. I made out like a bandit...did you?
@alabamahebrew
@alabamahebrew 5 жыл бұрын
No Andy it's not weird, let me put it this way, if you buy a new Chinese made electronic you buy it from a local store right? If you have an issue what do you do? You take it back to that store. If you buy a Chinese guitar where do you buy that from? Sometimes you can buy them from local places but most times it will be online. Now, you have an issue with that guitar, where do you take it? If my Gibson or Fender gives me an issue I can take it 30 minutes up the road to Guitar Center - see the difference? Plus a lot of people have an issue with buying items from companies that are selling their products so cheap because they pay their labor so cheap. Me personally, I will buy a guitar if I like it, period. I do however prefer to only buy from places that will deal directly with me if I have an issue.
@BAMozzy69

@@RickMcCargar You make some good points. It should be noted that the US wreaked more destruction on Japan than any other industrial nation has ever experienced. We killed between 700,000 and one million Japanese civilians, most of who were incinerated. 180,000 were killed by the 2 atomic bombs. ALL heavy industry was destroyed. On the day that the surrender was signed on the Missouri, LeMay flew over 800 B-29 bombers over Tokyo. Such was the American war machine. With a lot of post-war US help, the Japanese people rolled up their sleeves and rebuilt their industrial base from nothing to amazing in a couple of decades. I can remember when Nikon challenged Leica for the 35 mm market. People were blown away by the Japanese quality. Now, 'Made in Japan' means top quality. China cannot do anything like that because of the onerous government control of the population, and the government sponsored cheating and scamming culture that prevails there today.

Having some experience with Chinese manufacturing I feel compelled to point out that the advantage is far more than wages. Quality is increasing by leaps and bounds offshore and they are not generally built by children but some of the advantages are in the area of worker safety and working conditions. Very few factories operate on an 8hour day and overtime or productivity bonuses are not expected, much of which is culturally motivated. And although PPE has become more standardized, the environmental controls on most of these factories is nearly non existent. China is #1 in poor air quality and is experiencing serious issues with clean drinking water.

They are highly untrustworthy! For them it's all about getting the goods produced and out of the door. If you don't have your own QC team doing very rigorous checks there, they'll send you crap thats not specified -- as we found out with medical equipment, that our stupid management produced in china. The first 10.000 units we inspected 25% of them. Of that 25% around 30% did not meet spec! And we even found units that had different resistor and capacitor values! When we asked why the hell that was! They said: "We ran out of components. So we took the nearest value, it will work no worries!" It's a good thing that was a video call, because I would've fucking punched his glasses through his skull! It's ILLEGAL to change your registered designs of medical products. They are approved and registered as such, so changing the specs is not allowed without actually re-registering and approving your new design. But they don't care because it's out of their factory on time. So we ended up sending 3 people doing 24 hour shifts of QC. Kicking Chinese management for everything that went wrong. They hated us for it. Every time it was: "but it will work. it is fine! that doesn't matter". And that's electronics, which they are really good at! And after that contract we moved the production to Poland. Now that's quality! Proactive people, they do exactly what is asked and don't deviate. They call if supply is stuck and don't "wing it".

My Japanese,Indonesian, Chinese and made in Mexico guitars are definitely good enough for me. I know a lot of the American made are great quality, but I can't justify paying 5 to 10 times more for a guitar that in a lot of cases looks or plays no better than foreign made. And a lot of people don't understand that the wage and the cost of living can be way lower in these other countries. I imagine the skilled builders and luthiers here are paid a very high wage, as they should be. The cost of living is also very high in most of the US. Then you also have the American manufacturers that pay lower wages, produce a lot of guitars and mark them up to make ridiculous profits. Sure that $5,000 Martin or Taylor sound and look great....but so do the Japanese and Chinese Yamahas and some other brands for a forth or fifth the price.

Great video guys! As a Korean-Canadian, I just want to say thank you for destigmatizing the myths surrounding Asian manufacturing. South Korea is one of the fastest growing economies and is actually quite an upper class and modernized country nowadays. It's true that in some Asian countries there is less regulation and therefore less consistency across all products, but it really depends on the country, and therefore it's unfair for Western society to lump all Asian countries together as having inferior manufacturing. Some Western companies are even adopting Asian elements within their marketing, such as BOSS's Waza-craft and Katana lines of products, and to great success.

As far as Asian factories aside from Korea, one of the great things about the Chinese ripping everything off is that once one of the factories (say, in Chen Zhen) makes an improvement, or an innovation, all the other factories rip it off (or maybe they share the info?), and everyone's quality improves.

Max, love the channel. China Sceptic guy, i like his channel too. And of course my comments are not reflective of them. I've played on some Chinese guitars, even newer ones, and they are garbage. I have a "high end" Epiphone and it's a great guitar, AFTER i spend some time and money getting - 1) frets leveled 2) replaced the nut 3) fixed the radius on the saddles 4) etc... You have to do this and much more on these chinese guitars. Now, i'm sure that you can get a good one, but for my money I much prefer to spend more money on something done in a country that has years of experience as opposed to otherwise. Frankly, they could make some really good guitars, i just haven't seen any of the "copies" that were worth even the $200 plus shipping (i think they are closer to 5 or $600) they cost. I have played guitar for almost half a century and in that time have owned many guitars and amplifiers of many different name brands including several vintage guitars and amps. I currently own a fairly large collection of guitars and most are cheap guitars I modified and customized to play as well as world class instruments, including Squiers, Harley Bentons, IVY's, a custom strat with a scalloped neck assembled from parts I bought online for under $400.00 that is as good or better than any Fender Strat ever made. Recently, I bought a Monoprice Indio classic strat copy for $108.00, delivered with a well made gig bag because I wanted a cheap guitar to pull the frets and make a fretless guitar. Out of the box, the fit and finish was flawless and after some minor adjustments, this guitar screams. Sure the parts are cheap, but no frets needed to be filed down, the intonation is near perfect, the harmonics up and down the neck are clear, the action is low and easy to play and the tuning stability is amazing, staying in tune after intense shredding and tremolo dive bombing. I absolutely love this guitar and even with the cheap tuners, tremolo, pick-ups, pots and tone capacitor, the guitar plays beautifully as-is.

My nephew's squier is as good as my $1000 guitar from 20 years ago. The good thing is, it's not only the squier brand that does it. I noticed a lot of generic brands have great build quality (you still have to upgrade some hardware - tuners, etc, the usual suspects)

I have three guitars from China - one Ibanez, one Jackson, and one Stagg. They are all as good as any other guitar I've ever played that fit my short fingers. I've had a Japanese Strat and a Japanese Ibanez 7-String for 20 years, and they are amazing. I also made it a point to do my own research on modern factories in China, and how things have evolved - and I think it's important to be informed. Great video!!

Incidentally, I did replace the bridge pickup in my Stagg M350, but it was then that I found that The original pickup is wax-potted. I asked Stagg if all their pickups were waxed, and they confirmed this. I think that's pretty cool. I also just adore that guitar - it's made of Alder, Maple, and has a rosewood fingerboard - and it plays great! It also has THE nicest Sunburst finish I've ever enjoyed.

I've got a GT36 Les Paul made in China back in the 80s. Other than changing out the tuners and pickups, the guitar is on par with my Gibson LP Custom I purchased new in 2001. The materials and build quality are solid and at a price almost 80% less. Spend the money on a Gibson if you have money to burn or are looking to impress others but, for those who are simply looking for a solid instrument to play with, don't ignore the Chinese products.

What a lot of people don’t understand or want to understand is that for a "third world" / developing country to improve its economic status and quality of life for it’s citizens these types of jobs (inexpensive manufacturing, ect) are a necessity. And as the country & people gain experience, the quality of the manufacturing increases... and as the quality increases... the prices increases and the laborers began to get paid more.... - - It’s just like growing up... your first job, you don’t know what you’re doing and get payed minimum wage, your next job your a little more skilled and you get Paid more... and by the time you’ve been working, learning, improving yourself, striving to do a better job for 20 years... you [should] be producing quality work and making a good living... It’s the same way for nations and societies. Great interview.

The conservative said we can't equate America's pay to an overseas employee, he mentioned something to the fact of "that $1 a day may be all the income their family can make why do you who lives in another country think you should dictate their life and income?". I had never heard it that way 🤔

Greetings from the UK! Great video, I always enjoy different perspectives on things in life and how, in this instance, buying an affordable guitar does noes necessarily equate to settling for second best or even that it's going to be poor quality. In some regards, reviews of more affordable quality equipment could be said to be more interesting than stuff that is expensive, and that's because guitars that are two grand and upwards really should be excellent without any issues, and is usually out of reach economically for many of us, but something like a Harley Benton Fusion II, a G&L ASAT, the brand Vintage, and others are redefining what a great instrument can be, and bigger brands like Fender are catching on to this and are constantly evolving with great guitars such as their 'Player' series. Mike's a lovely chap guy, I enjoy content from the both of you. Take care.

Poor customer service and even the quality seems to have dropped from what I have seen others post. I have mentioned this before but sold my Gibson Les Paul and kept my high end Epiphone Les Paul and just hot rodded it a bit and it plays as nice and sounds as good to me better then my Gibson did. I have watched quite a few videos on the Chibson guitars coming from China and seen some astounding work being done to them to give them that Gibson quality sound and feel. Eric C has videos on how to totally rework a Chibson from neck to body. I think a lot of other musicians are starting to wake up to overseas made guitars.

I think Mike hit the nail on the head. Being in Oz, while we do get American made Gibsons/Fenders etc, the ACTUAL price in Australia is way more expensive than what Americans pick them up for (even second handers). I can appreciate the whole patriotism and buying American. For us over here, it's never make financial sense when you could pick up an asian made instrument that's pretty good for close to a 1/3 of the price of an American made ANYTHING. We've got a few local companies and if I was going to spend lots of money on THE guitar, it would probably be with a local builder.

@WAFFEN COLLIDER Yeah it's gotten a lot worse over the last few years, but it's always been a bit skewed. I don't think it was too bad around the late 90's as the dollar was nearly 1:1. But take into account now it's about 1.4:1, new 10% import taxes, around $100 for shipping and then if a retailer marks it up (which in variably they do by a nice percentage) your $100 cheap guitar becomes a $300 guitar.

Good point about the difference in cost of living. I live in Sweden, one of the more expensive and higher wage countries in the EU. There are lots of countries that have cheaper labor in the EU, like Poland, where a lot of EU made stuff is manufactured because of the lower labor costs. But it's not like poles have it absolutely horrible and can't afford food because of it. If I as a Swede however go to Norway, where people earn even more money, I'll also find that a lot of common things I'm used to paying less for here in Sweden is almost prohibitively expensive in Norway, because my swedish wage isn't enough there, but theirs is.

lets take a trip in the Wayback Machine shall we? aaaaaaaaand it takes us back to 1976. Hartley Peavey makes a trip to the Far East to see just how the Oriental manufacturing process worked. what he found was factory CNC tech capable of churning out over 300 guitar bodies per work day. he returned to Meridian MS and purchased a CNC for Peavey USA Guitars and thusly produced the very 1st USA made CNC machined guitar called the T-60 in 1978. that 1 incident changed United States guitar manufacturing hence forth. Gibson and Fender both were nowhere near attempting such a transition and wouldnt make the attempts for over a decade after. folks can say what they want about Oriental manufacturing, but all they really do is exemplify what Henry Ford originally did with the assembly line. quality controls loosen and tighten in every company, no matter where its located. as much as some dislike admitting, the original Peavey 5150 amps that were made in Viet Nam were of the very best of the series, both in quality and sound vs their USA made counterparts. side by side comparisons prove this. 1 final notation. not only did Hartley revolutionize guitar manufacturing in the USA, he also kept the pricepoints in line with the foreign offerings while providing quality.

I'm really finding these Thomann Show interviews to be very interesting. Unfortunately, I must differ with why the overseas guitars are inexpensive. This idea that labor costs are what make U.S. and U.K. guitars expensive isn't the only reason. Most of these countries don't have the same labor, occupational safety, and environmental laws that more developed countries have. Some even burn cheap, heavily polluting coal to generate the energy to run their operations. Stealing U.S. and U.K. designs means that they don't pay to do R&D work necessary to develop great guitar innovations. Many of these countries also have subsidized industries, if not directly, it's through things like social programs (health care, pensions, etc.) that aren't provided in places like the U.S., except through the manufacturer of the guitar, if at all. It's also well known that these countries manipulate the value of their currency to make exports more attractive. Add it all together and you have goods that aren't being made on a level playing field, far from it. Without some limits, these conditions will cost too many jobs in the advanced countries. If more people in the advanced countries are unemployed, who will be able to buy these inexpensive guitars? The low end is great for people just starting out; I own a few budget, foreign made guitars from Asia, but when I merit a better guitar, I'm going to go with one of those beautiful guitars like the one made by PRS that Mike was holding and extolling its perfection. That's what I call living the dream.

@Danny Lee: Learning Guitar with Rocksmith. R&D is about the future, not just the past. Would Gibson have developed the Les Paul back in the '50's if they knew that somebody like China would steal their ideas and make cheaper versions, so they couldn't make money? Will Gibson do any more R&D to improve the Les Paul or develop a new guitar design in the future? They're probably far less likely to do so unless countries like China are reigned in.

@@vedicmetalhead1029 Not a snob, just pointing out the economics, but it doesn't sound like you care about people in the U.S. and U.K. being employed. Sounds like you only care about getting the cheapest guitar you can find regardless of the social and health costs that are required to get that cheap price. PRS guitars are excellent guitars and not only have a great Strat and Les Paul hybrid sound, but they're also made to be durable; play like butter; and be easier to maintain as designed and built by luthier Paul Reed Smith. We haven't even talked about the fabulous custom shop and boutique guitars. What's good for me may not be good for a lot of people. I certainly won't condemn someone who can't afford an expensive guitar. What guitar to buy is best determined by the buyer to best meet the players needs.
