Bruce, absolutely fascinating. Thank you for taking the time to research and document the line. This portion of the E&W is such a part of my youth when I lived in Mishawaka. I went to school for a few years at Elsie Rogers and Kennedy. I remember the bus having to stop for a train on several occasions at the crossing on McKinley. Later, my parents opened a business in 100 Center that they owned until the early 80's. Walked past Uniroyal and the maze of trackage there countless times on my way to Bob's Hobby Shop. Occasionally caught a Switcher working the plant. Did not realize there had been direct rail service to the Brewery. I do remember in the early days of the 100 Center that the line ran past the Uniroyal plant to the west to the area just east of the Center. There would be a few cars stored there. I *think* it was more than one stub ended track there. Michiana has a wealth of rail history, thank you again for helping to preserve it.

Wow. When I lived in South Bend in the late 70's I knew of the existence of the E&W, but had no idea of the extent of the traffic east of the Grand Trunk connection. This branch would be a perfect prototype for a switching layout.

My dad grew up on Lasalle just north of the Jefferson and Fir Intersection. He told me a Interesting things about that line. They used the line going to the GTW to drop off automobiles for nearby Jordan Ford. The dealership was right between both lines and is still open today. My grandpa hung out at a bar called Decooks which used to be across the line from Owen Corning. He told me the conductor and engineers would park the trains right near the bar to eat.

I want to say there are still rails stamped 1900’s in the Elkhart area before you get to SR 19 crossing. I took some pics years ago of the dates but can’t find them now.

Great video! I always wondered about the history of that line. It must have been really busy with that uniroyal and brewery. Thank you for the info!

Thanks for another informative and great video. I just hate to see abandoned lines though, so please do a video of the section of line still in use and compare with Conrail days. Thank you.
