BACKPACKING COLOMBIA EPISODE 16 - LA GUAJIRA
This video was filmed between 6th-16th March 2020.
Just before the pandemic, my final destination in Colombia was La Guajira. Colombia's desert land. So starting in Riohacha, I made a friend in my hostel called Alejandro and together we visited Cabo de La Vela and Punta Gallinas across 3 days. Our jeep broke down so many times I lost count but it was a great adventure.

Ahhh I'm crying!!! I'm so sad your Colombia trip got cut short. It has honestly brought so much joy to my life in such a devastating time in the world. But, on the bright side, you have inspired me to go backpacking which is something I had never considered. I even bought your same EagleCreek backpack lol! Keep doing you girl.

Noooo! This was my escape during quarantine. One of the main things that brought me joy - I feel a little devastated. What a fantastic series! Please tell us more about the indigenous people in the forgotten part of the world. Maybe as a BP Banana community we can bind together to help a little bit, both the environment & the people?

I am from Colombia and I really enjoyed this series. Thank you for making it! I love to travel around my country so re-living some of the places I’ve visited and learning about new ones was great (definitely want to go to some of them when this whole thing is over) Thank you Christianne for coming here with an open mind and being able to help break down the untrue stereotypes that surround Colombia while highlighting all the great stuff to do here. Love your videos 💕

Hi Christianne ! I am from Colombia and I loved your travelvlog here; I also went to la Guajira a few years ago; and I liked that sense of rough place still far away so only the "chosen" can get there. And its true about the poverty and hard living conditions of the native wayu people and the plastic polution in every settlement. Unfortunately the corruption comes from their own native leaders that steal and misdirect the resources. They still have clan fights. Hopefully new plans to create wind electric plants will bring investment to help the living conditions of the locals. Though th e landscape will change a little with the wind mills. Cheers!

It's been a great series and very varied. The homestay in Bogota was such a contrast to this jeep journey. Loved the sweet looking lady in the first taxi, she looked so curious as to why you were filming. The tour company were cheaper than you were expecting and were flexible with an extra night, guess that was the flipside to the many breakdowns, which must have been annoying but you saw the good points to the trip. Glad you balanced the tour with your comments on the local economy. Were you planning to go anywhere else than Minca in Colombia? Along the river to Mompox? Walking the hidden city jungle trek?I Looking forward to the debrief video.

I've absolutely loved this series! I've never given much thought into South America but it's definitely on my list after watching these videos. I can't believe you managed to stay so positive on your trip where the jeep kept braking down, I would have never been able to keep my cool! And thank you for being honest about the problems with all of the rubbish in the desert and with the poverty there. It's always good to see the other side to places a lot of people wouldn't be aware of x

As always, loved this backpacking bananas series! I loved seeing you challenge yourself even more with this series - from the beginning with taking a smaller bag, to learning Spanish, and also as always, it's so refreshing to see someone who genuinely enjoys backpacking and isn't running to luxury travel at the first sign of youtube success. I love your outlook on travel and your attitude towards everything you face on your trips, from the adventurous to the challenging (which is often one in the same). I also wanted to make an aside about plastic pollution in Indigenous communities - I think it's extremely important to note that the plastic is introduced by people with more power and money (like corporations or governments) without also introducing a means of waste management that can handle that sort of trash, so in a place that previously had predominantly organic waste, they are faced with no choice but to dispose of the plastic waste in the same manner since there are no garbage trucks going from door to door. This is one of the many ways that the powerful and wealthy oppress Indigenous peoples and other marginalized groups - introduce a product that will make them (the oppressors) wealthier but not deign to deal with the consequences of the waste produced by their actions.

I think in this Last episode you let your spirit fly. I'm Colombian and I fully understand how conditions are in La Guajira. They are not easy for saying least. You were somehow uncomfortable but yet you decided to keep engaging with your trip. And then that's were you had it most. It's like the Buddhist tale, when you accept all the misery and the pain, so you can see the whole pic. I reckon you might have experienced sort of that feeling. It was quite beautiful to see you through the whole process.

This was the best video I LOVED it! "If you're trip is glamorised what have you overcome or learnt" really resonated with me!! It's so true. Instagram and social media makes travel just look so glamorous and perfect but it really isn't at all.
