Thank you Wizza. you're hundred percent correct. But this specific video portrays a huge and important part of Namibia, right outside of it's capital city Windhoek where over 1 million people live under abnormal conditions, most of them even without electricity. and the Namibian government dose not want tourist or foreigners to see. While just a few minutes away in Windhoek you'll find the rich and modern houses of only a minority of the people of Namibia, a great portion of them mostly white people, like some Germans who do business in Namibia. In fact, this video was made by request of a local hard working Namibian taxi driver who demanded that I would show the world - "The Real Namibia" - in his exact words..and he took me into Katutura where the majority of the black Namibian citizens live, more than a million strong who live in great poverty.

I agree with Wiza Phiri. I am Namibian myself and a Geography lecturer. The photos of the formal part of Windhoek too, are real Africa. Yes, the situation of the informal settlements in Namibia is absolutely out of hand. The reasons of why people live in informal are dynamic; it would require you more than a day trip to get an idea. If you ask about or travel to original houses of the people you visited there, you may be surprised. While poverty and inequality is one of the reasons for the expansion of informal settlements, not everyone there is necessarily poor. Some people choose to live there because land is relatively free and because settlers, who have often migrated from other parts of Namibia, prioritize investing their income in bettering their homes in their places of origin, rather than spending it on renting a formal house/room, for example. Therefore, it is not rare to find formally employed people in Windhoek living in such condition.

Real Africa was not a good title. Do you mean to say beautiful roads and well lit areas in Africa is fake Africa? You should have said the katutura. Saying real Africa while being excited to see poor places is because you believe that’s the life we should be living and that’s real. That is wrong and misguided. Real Africa encompasses everything you find in africa. From cities to villages to farms to beaches and deserts.

I'm Namibian living in Katutura, thank you for this video. I know most of our politicians are living lavish lifestyles off the money we're all supposed to benefit from and they don't like people showing this slums to the world. Namibia has a population of 2.8 million people with a GDP per Capita of 4800 USD, problem is wealth is unevenly distributed we are ranked second in the world after South Africa so the gap between the rich and poor is too big

Those are temporal structures and it doesn't mean how real Africans live, no wonder it is called shantytowns/slums as some may call it. In every country you can go, there are such places even in Europe and it doesn't mean they live African way of living, for your own information Africa is rich and has good places as well.

Peace Thank you for Visiting Namibia 🇳🇦. Really, we love Tourists. However, I caught offense of you say that "this is the real Africa" alluding to the slums and Poverty. You have stereotyped Africa as poor and unhealthy living conditions... Quite for a fact, up to 98% of the world every country has its own slums. And a word of advice to our local guide , please visit some original sources and have more facts about Namibia. Isaac you are really generous to Tourists and for that you deserve to be praised. Namibia is a Beautiful Country. People here have it hard but they are doing their best to make earns meat.

As a Namibian, personally I am from Katutura. It's not a rich neighborhood but.... It holds a significant History and all what you see in Katutura are the echoes of its Dark past. Thank you, Festus. I appreciate the honest and polite way of your critique. I am truly sorry if you feel that I portray all Africa as to be poor living in so-called unhealthy conditions. Well, first off, the only thing I was really alluding to was the fact that the real local people of Windhoek are in my eyes the black Namibian residents, of which the majority of them live in Katutura, excluding the white Germans who make a good living in the Namibian capital. But, with that said, one can not live in denial and try to convince himself or others that the African countries aren't considered third world countries. Well, they are indeed third world countries, and there is a reason why they are called that way. And that reason my friend, whether you like it or not, is because the vast majority of the people in Africa are very poor. And yes, many of them also unfortunately live in very difficult conditions. So, instead of taking it as an insult, please understand that both of us, Issac, the Namibian, and I, the British man, were both trying to make a point. The point was to show that unlike what the Namibian government tries to portray to foreigners who visit Windhoek, the true original residents of Windhoek, which make the core majority of Katutura, aren't having an easy life whatsoever. Now, as far of what you said about most countries of the west, that they too have slums. I would not use that as a parallel or example. Because with all due respect, although it's true that you would find slums in many other countries, it is in no way in such a scale as it is in Africa. Not even close. I can totally understand why you would feel uncomfortable or rather a bit offended by that topic. But I had no intention to make anyone feel that way. In fact, the very contrary, I came to defend your peoples rights to have a better life and hope that your government would do more to improve the lives of so many of its capital residents.

Thank you Elli's. Well, in Namibia what most tourists get to see is just the more modern parts of the city where mostly white have influenced the economy. But the vast majority of its people struggle for their living and that's exactly what I was trying to show - the real African residence of Namibia. Like Katutura this is where you'll find the true, Namibian people.

There's plenty of black middle class neighborhoods in Windhoek. So they're not real Namibians because they are not poor?If you were to visit say, Lagos, would you say the same about the poor Lagosians being the real Nigerians? So you only associate black Namibians with poverty?

@@M_KK Hey M KK. I think you should read my first reply to Elis. Of course whoever is born in Namibia, be poor or rich is a real Namibian. But yea, as a travel vlogger my point was to make light out of the struggling poor Namibian people and yes I think they're are the real people of Windhoek Namibia, because they deserve to be recognized. As a tourist you don't get to see Katutura where the majority of the black Namibian people live. Instead you get to see only the nice and modern parts of Windhoek where it's largely influenced by local German people and not the core citizens of Namibia.

Dont come and mislead people here.. Katutura means the place were we dont want to stay not that explanation you gave and this was cos in 1959 the Afrikaners build 2 bedroom brick houses in Katutura and devided those houses in different locations according to tribes eg Herero location, Wamboe location and forced the people to go stay there and they protested and they fought the boers and some were shot dead, just cos the Afrikaners didnt want the unity the people had and wanted to devide the tribes and also to be far from were the whites were staying

I like you clip. However I have to correct you on one subject. Do not try to slip out from inherited guilt. All white people are guilty for the poverty in Namibia and elsewhere in Africa including Finish and Lithuanians, that has been scientifically proven by experts in Europe, compensation should be paid. I am sure that in Brussels brave political avantgarde will find solution. But your reportage is nothing new for me, that is how I have seen it 50 years ago,. Except that then South West Africa had hardly 1 million people including 100 000 whites, bushmen and Rehoboth Basters. And more importantly, then was not yet discovered and scientifically proven that for the situation of black people are solely responsible all white people including mentioned Fins and Lithuanians. NO ONE can and NO ONE should blame anyone for their misfortune situation, especially for being poor. It is only in your hands and in your own responsibility to make a greater living for yourself. Well, it is no one to blame but yourselves. Many years have passed by since you have become independent and through all these years you and your government had all the power in your own hands to make something good for yourselves and to create a better future for you and your children. So, to blame the entire world for all your problems isn't going to make your life better in any way, shape, or form. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY INTO YOUR OWN HANDS AND START BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE FOR YOUR OWN PEOPLE. iTS' ABOUT TIME! It's in your people's hands only! No one else could make you richer or poorer. The worst part of the city you call it is the real Africa that can't be right. Every city has its own worse, including the Western world. There're millions of people who are homeless in London or New York. If they could have their way, they'll live in them chunks too, but you won't describe it the real Europe, would you. Well, first off, I was expressing what the driver has told me, which he is a local resident of Katutura and wanted me to show the difference between the quality of living in Windhoek and Katutura. Second, It ain't no secret that the majority of the black Namibian residents in the capital city live in Katutura and not in the more developed area of Windhoek. Also, since Windhoek also has many white Germans or other foreign business people I therfore also called the people of Katutura the real Africa. This was by no means to down grade Africa. One can not ignore the fact that most people of Africa live in poverty mainly as a result of their corrupt governments. It is in deed sad, and what I was trying to show on my visit to Katutura was exactly that.

@Peace Out And Go - Travel my friend, it's looking down on African. You might not do it intentionally, but the fact remains that you don't have any video showing the poverty in Europe. If you don't film poverty in Europe, why would you do it in Africa. There are many European who came to Africa before you, doing exactly the same filming. Therefore, it gave Africa a very bad image. Like said, if the homeless in the Western world would have their way, they would have chunks. Eastern Europe they have poverty there, even the UK Borough Council home. They're in terrible conditions. But how much money has the UK spent in Ukraine so far? Corruption is everywhere, my friend. It's just easy to film and talk the worst of Africa, isn't it? By the way, there were so many African leaders who got killed, removed from power, and sanctioned by European because they put their people first. By the way, I'm not angry with you, I just want to educate you on how we black people feel.

@Joel Joel thank you, sir, again for your lessons. With all due respect and with no intention of making things worse than they are already, first, I've already told you that it was one of your own - the Namibian taxi driver who lives in Katutura - that requested me to show the world how your government is not showing the real situation its most people. Because tourists visit in Windhoek and don't get to see Katutura. Second, how can you even make any comparison to the homeless you'd find in England or even in the whole of Europe. Well, even if you'd includ all the poor neighborhoods in the west combined, it would still not come any close to the situation in Africa. There is nothing to educate me about the facts, whether it is about the West or Africa. Unfortunately, poor and homeless people are everywhere. Absolutely. But percentage wise, you can not even think about comparing Africa to the West. I mean, obviously, there is a reason why African countries are considered third-world countries. That isn't a reason for you to feel any less about yourself or your country. That should only determine you and your leaders to seek ways to make your people's lives better. And, that was exactly the intention of showing Katutura in that video.

@Peace Out And Go - Travel The funny thing is the people who are calling Africa the third world they are the one looting Africa days and nights. We rhe African, we're carrying almost the whole world on our back. Western world is built on the back of the African. It's about time the Western world stopped exploiting and called us the third world. I suggest you do the next video, by exposing the Western to how they take from us, generating poverty in the motherland, and you guys coming back to film it. The second thing is that the Westerners are good at covering up the truth. I know country in Europe which suffer in poverty go to Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Estonia even Germany they covering up things. UK Borough Council Houses, most of them are shit hole, and this is one the country conquered and colonised, and they still can't get right.

Well, mate, I'm not sure that I need to prove anything to you or else. But for the sport of it I'll tell you that first, I live in the borough of Hackney in East London. Second, if you're a Londoner, then you'd know that a vast majority of London residents aren't original British born citizens since London is one of the largest migratory cities in the world. So there you've your answer about the accent.

@Betty K I can only relate and agree with you on the crime part. But na. In no way, shape, or form can I ever compare the poverty or living conditions. So, sorry. Yes, it definitely sucks to live in a city with that high level of crime. and yes, every country in the world has its fair share of problems and disadvantages. But you can't compare the two.

@@travelwithpeace1 for a “first world” country, homelessness is equitable to homelessness anywhere in the world. Nobody would say I’d rather be homeless in 🇬🇧 than Africa. Poor is poor! No better poverty!
