In my opinion (as a non-drummer), the greatest strength Ian Paice had was his ability to read where everybody else were going. It's more noticeable in other old live clips, but I think it's amazing how quickly he adapts to the improvisation of his band members.

There isn't much footage of them from back in the 70s, but check out anything from their live album Made In Japan, largely regarded as arguably the best live album of all time. Highway Star has some old video footage and synched with the excellent album audio. For Ian Paice star moments check out the studio versions of Burn and Lay Down Stay Down, such inventive drumming on those two. You'll love them!

Deep Purple started in 1968, that video was 1970, and here today, 2024, they are still touring, they will be here in Australia a month from now. Three of the five in the 1970 video are still there: * Ian Gillan - vocals * Roger Glover - bass * Ian Paice - drums * Jon Lord - keyboards - retired 2002, died 2012 * Ritchie Blackmore - lead guitar - quit 1993 * Don Airey - keyboards - replaced Jon Lord in 2002 * After Blackmore quit mid tour in 1993, Joe Satriani stepped in as a ‘touring’ member for about a year. * Steve Morse was the full time lead guitar replacement and was in the band from 1994 to 2022 (longer than Blackmore), he retired to look after his wife who has cancer. * Simon McBride - lead guitar - replaced Morse in 2022 It’s now 56 years since Deep Purple started, and they’re still going strong! Cheers,

Bit more info for you: 22 - studio albums 43 - live albums (a lot are unofficial and bootlegs) 15 - video albums - basically recorded live concerts - some are very good, a lot from the Morse era 55 - singles Despite the number of singles, Purple is not a singles band, they are an album band, pretty much the same as all of their other British 70s contemporaries, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, etc, were all about making an album you could listen too, all side 1, flip over, and all side 2. As for singles ‘Hush’ from 1968 is worth a listen, it was a taste of things to come Albums worth listening to in full are (make sure you listen to re-mastered’ versions, the sound is so much crisper): * In Rock - 1970 - this is where Gillan and Glover joined, this is where it got heavy - (the first track ‘Speed King’ is a killer, but not the cut down US version, has to be the full uncut version) * Fireball - 1971 - not as heavy, bit more funky, still a favourite * Machine Head - 1972 - most successful album, a bit ahead of In Rock, just, in my opinion * A few tracks from ‘Burn’ 1974, are worth a listen, such as the title track ‘Burn’ and also ‘Mistreated’ * Perfect Strangers - 1984 - was the reunion album worth a long listen to * Perpendicular - 1996 - first Steve Morse album, worth a listen to some tracks * The more recent stuff such as ‘Now What?!’ 2013, ‘Infinite’ 2017 and ‘Whoosh’ 2020 are worth a listen for a more contemporary sound, all produced by the famous Bob Ezrin. Live: Made in Japan - 1972 - Arguably one of the best live albums ever made, no overdubs, they were flying on this one - listen to it all, start to finish, but make sure it’s the re-mastered version. And there are a broad range of DVD videos from live concerts. One point - most of the stuff worth listening to doesn’t have a music video with it, they don’t have to, there for listening to! Cheers,

I was lucky enough to see Deep Purple in 1971, 5 rows from the stage, with this same lineup: Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), Ian Paice (drums), Ian Gillan (vocals), and the virtuoso among virtuosos, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar). They were already playing songs from their Machine Head album which was released a few months later in 1972. Hard for me to pick a favorite Purple song, there are so many, but Smoke on the Water and Highway Star alwasy get me going; Child in Time ranks up there too.

Again, another great reaction. I just love to see people who can really appreciate true musicianship. When I say to my friends "back then it was all better" they say you have to roll with the tide, there is good music today also. I have to say no to that. Or lets say to me it doesn't matter. I know I have this emotional connection to bands like Deep Purple or Dire Straits cause I grew up with them, but now, watching these performances, my bond grows even deeper. I have never seen Purple or DS live, but watching these performances, my mind is truly blown.

My daughter said to me when I told her that there isn't any good music anymore, other than the odd song. She said there is, you just have to look for it. My response was, if it's good I shouldn't have to look for it, it should be front and center.
@musashimiyamoto586

@@Wishes890 I know quite well that it is mostly due to the music I grew up with, which accompanied me throughout my fomative phase. I cannot even remember how I would discover new music at the time. Today I am neither looking for new bands nor am I listening to the radio. One thing is for sure, what I see on KZfaq and the impressions I get from that "nww" music is just not me. So the new generation may keep it for themselves.

I grew up on rock, hard rock, and heavy metal. I respectfully disagree with you on modern music. Modern metal in particular is incredible! It might be different style from old school, but I grew to love it! And I am 68!
@musashimiyamoto586
@musashimiyamoto586 3 ай бұрын
@@robertfitterman3777 Also respectfully, you cannot really disagree with me cause this is a matter of personal preference.;) I like heavy metal (like Alter Bridge) and I do not know what you prefer specifically, I only know that what I know as hard or progressive rock is different from today. In general, I just adore bands like Dire Straits (although not a heavy metal or hard rock band) or Deep Purple, cause they were such grand musicans and storytellers. As I said, it all has to do with when and how you connect with the music and I am convinced that having those bands in my formative years made all the difference to me. You were able to make new connections at your age, good for you. In the old days (I was born in 1964) one was exposed to music through friends, the radio, music charts and such, mostly in your teens and twens, today it is not the same and I am not really looking for new music any more. Also, because I accept that times change and admittedly I am set in my ways a bit. Nothing wrong with that, either. E.g. I never liked The Beatles or Rolling Stones. Not my cup of tea. Pink Floyd was more my brother's taste, they never hit it off with me in particular. The reason for that? Simply don't know.

Awesome reaction! Took me ages to realise the importance of Mr Paice, but it was when he played with other bands after '76 that it really highlighted it for me. He was - and still is - the metronome! If you've got a spare 20 minutes then Space Truckin' off of Made in Japan will blow your mind! Regarded by many as the best live album and unedited! There's also some live performances of the instrumental "Wring That Neck" which are also a must. The '87 album called "House of Blue Light" I prefer to call "the drumming album", which is rarely visited by reactors! And finally for a quick fix that will have you stunned then it has to be "Burn" from '74. So jealous as you start your new journey - Good Luck!

Never figured out why Purple never gets the respect it deserves. Is there a better rock vocalist than Gillan or a tighter rhythm section? And of course, one of the great guitar gods and a virtuoso on keyboards (R.I.P. John). They still continue to produce some pretty good albums which unfortunately get little attention in North America.

Exceptional talent from this group. Also check out the guitarist's (Ritchie Blackmore) next band called Rainbow. Super group with Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Cozy Powell on drums along with Ritchie's guitar. Songs like "Stargazer" and the 1977 Munich concert songs "Mistreated" & "Catch the Rainbow". These will blow you away.

1960-70s is the best style of music of all genre including hard rock !!! Though in DP, there's personal conflict between Gillan and Blackmore that made them set apart, I disregard this. I love their work and noone can change Blackmore. Neither can Gillan! Without them, it's not deep purple!

The audience looked like they didn’t understand what was happening. But it was 1970 and music like this was like from outer space compared to what was done before. Gillan had unbelievable range back then. And they are still touring despite doing the Long Goodbye Tour couple years back. One of my all time favourite bands for sure.

You need to look into Australian legend”John Farnham. Over 5 decades of great music, in most genres. Started solo, spent some time with “little river band and then solo again. The late 80’s into the 90’s were his best. John,(imo) is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time.

British audiences were apparently on quaaludes back then. Not in America. We loved Deep Purple. (And Tull and Yes and The Nice and...) They didn't get it. Musicianship just kept getting better and better for years until their simple minds created punk, which was a rebellion against good musicianship. Oddly enough, a few decent bands, like New Order, rose from the ashes of punk.
