Sort of jazzy sound in those days, the time is completely ‘feely’ as well. Way more texture and fluidity to the track thanks to this.

The swing kicks are absolutely insane and they don’t even stand out in the track. Like they are literally on the next level of swing but the snare hits are so straight it keeps the groove rock solid. Incredible 😅
4 жыл бұрын
His kick work is essential but so clean and swinging. It's really what's propelling the song, even if it's not flashy at all (a part from some fast triplets and doubles here and there). This is what a great drummer does.

Ian Paice is without doubt one of the most technically brilliant rock drummers ever..he uses fills in places where it seems virtually impossible to place them. One of a kind. He has a style that is very unique and difficult to replicate....made Deep Purple the exceptionally brilliant band they were. 😊

I met Ian, Roger Glover and Jon Lord after a gig in 1972. He was a total gentleman as were the other two 'non-stars' . He is so under-rated with people flocking to the feet of Bonham. Ian was just as important to me , in fact his impact was often greater. Some of his fills on Strange Kinda Woman are almost impossible to break down and the feel is unique.

I would say there's a lot of swing to the bass kicks - and it sounds great. Why is this totally missing from today's drummers?
@johng72656 жыл бұрын
MrCJK84 you're right theres plenty of swing however Im no modern drummer. Its just i never heard it that way with the music
@j_freed4 жыл бұрын
MrCJK84 - it's from all the classic pop influences they grew up with at the time that are now long missing. Think Sinatra and Tom Jones as obvious examples but there must be hundreds we've barely heard. Same thing with Zeppelin, did you hear their live song medleys where they just play a bunch of old folksy and blues tunes? And some of their album tracks would simply not exist without diverse influences. That would make a cool documentary.

3:43 is great, no doubt, but 1:58 is a rocket ship! Paice always had that cool tendency to Jazz up his straight Rock beats, especially on "&" notes, which are all over this song. Always loved his energy, the enjoyment he communicated, and his single stroke roll rips back into a phrase: there's one here near the end, and a really sweet, slower one on "Perfect Strangers" during the closing 4/4, 5/4 patterns. Just awesome. Still underrated, but real Drummers know. Love the channel! Can't wait to dig around and see if there's some Bill Bruford, Alan White, and Carl Palmer! A request: Claude Salmieri playing on Gipsy King's track "Mosaique". One of the greatest independence/rolls/cymbal expression tracks, ever. A *daily* practice/listening piece! 👍

Ritchie Blackmore tells a story of how as early as ‘72 he was thinking about leaving Purple and forming another band. The first guy in Purple he spoke to about this was Ian Paice, apparently Ritchie was very impressed with a young, Irish Bass player, who could sing, by the name of Phil Lynott. He booked some studio time and they played a few sessions supposedly, according to Ritchie. So Ritchie Blackmore knee who he wanted from Purple if he went out on his own even then. Ian Paice, listening to this isolated drum track you can understand why Ritchie was always so impressed by Ian Paice.

Neil Power single pedal on this song, quick clean doubles aren’t that hard. Nicko can hit triplets that clean on a single pedal This song rocks though
@neilpower17314 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyb924 Hope you are well. Have you listened to the parts on this isolated drum track I mentioned in my previous post? I'm not disputing the fact that quick clean double taps can't be done with one foot. I know plenty of drummers who can do that. I can do it, you can probably do it yourself. My point is that these parts I've mentioned on this isolated track, sonically, sound like double bass parts. I could never hear them on the original recording. I understand your point. But your point that Nicko Mc' Brain can do that, for me, is not really a valid proof or argument that single pedal/double bass took place on this track. I agree the song rocks.

This is the reason why the classic Rock kills modern pop shit. #1 - Songs - ( excellent song writing) #2 - Tone - ( guitars had brilliant organic analog tone, drums were tuned expertly and recorded well) drums were aloud to reverberate and breathe in the studio as well. #3 - Musicianship ( These guys took their craft seriously) This is an example of why this shit hits so hard 46 years after it was recorded. Snare is tuned perfectly for rock. Rock drummers still had a swing in the beat.

Rock Beato was saying it's no longer the style to tune drum heads as high a tension as they did 50 years ago, maybe back then it was a carry-over from Jazz because many big rock drummers had some of that influence of Gene Krupa et al.
