Ian Gillan underrated? Since when? He's acknowledged as one of the best ever. How's that underrated?

Hardly underrated, except the US possibly. Intelligent, quite so. Charismatic for sure. Interesting, absolutely. Humble? IMO very far from it. In this interview he seemed quite grumpy, pretty full of himself and quite grandiose - as I think he always does. He's smart but not nearly as smart as he thinks, and a lot of his recollections change from time to time (especially when it comes to Blackmore). And, again, IMO, he shouldnt' really be on stage the way he sounds now. His voice broke in the late 80s, and although I still enjoyed seeing DP 20 years ago, it's gotten even worse since then (even more IMO, Morse's degrading capability, Airey's boring playing displeasing sound, and the weird, offputting live mix they've had since about when Lord left hasn't made things better).

WIKIPEDIA is actually a CRIMINAL enterprise. (I know personally, bc they printed LIES about me and blocked correction. They also BLOCKED any truths. Systemically. It's an ESTABLISHMENT tool.)

(HOW bad was it? Ppl check my page too often -- even a judge once read it and decided against putting me in jail!! (THAT's how serious this shit is) -- and for months they let vandals keep up "the chronically-unemployed [my name]".... which wasn't even remotely true. (EX: I'd had the same job for 15 years!) Ian Gillan is the total package and still is despite the voice being a bit reduced. He's still up there strutting as well as he can at his age. He can't stop. Who came before him, anyway? Name one. Look up dates.

While Gillan is my most favorite frontman, I love Jim Morrison and Daltrey too for their great presence.

@ Doom Rock No, Robert Plant might have been able to compete with him for being a great singer or having the higher vocal range, but even Plant couldn't rival him for hard rock/heavy metal singing and screams.

Halford came to the scene in early 70s... and that was the end of the competition. People usually remeber him as a vocalist he'd been during 80s, who showcased terrific attacks and screams but had some unstable moments on his weaker ranges and off nights. But in 70s, Halford's singing was a freak of nature, bar none. Well-controlled and perfect-pitched screams could go up to B5, no signs of strains on mid-highs, majestic pipes that easily beats any singers in their heydays. Gillan and Dio might have been second or third... but that 70s Halford was a demigod.

He is one of the best 5 lead singers in hard rock. The entire band is great and over looked by a lot of rock people. During the 1960's, 1970's and then back again in the latest 1980' s and 1990's until 2018. He has sang in some of the best bands in rock history. When D.P. quit with Tommy bolin in the band it was very sad. Peace rock fans!

THANK YOU. Lotta great singers out there, but GILLAN is the one almost all other singers look up to! TRAGIC that the USA radio stations never played DP's IN ROCK or FIREBALL, which I think are even better than Machine Head.

IN FACT, Deep Purple were MORE INFLUENTIAL than ZEP / SABBATH.... COMBINED. Ian Gillan was the one they ALL wanted to sound like. Judas Priest. KISS. Van Halen. Iron Maiden. Yngwie. Metallica. AND ALL THE REST say it was DP, DP, DP who they wanted to be. (Sabbath inspired a zillion garage bands, but few giants. Zep inspired a few hair metal bands and some other acts, like Billy Squier, and Whitesnake, but DP was THE ONES. "IN ROCK" is the BIBLE of metal! And the song "FIREBALL" invented the entire speed metal genre! SO SAD that DP always gets put last in the ZEP / SAB / DP triangle. (DP were LESS CONSISTENT, so there's that. Even their peak line-up put out some real filler!)

It sounds too close to Paradise City, which I hate. I know it came out before the GNR hit , but I heard the latter before I heard the Sabbath tune.

to be fair, MOST big singers use prompters, and have for over a decade. I'm not famous and even I use cheat sheets in some of my bands, b/c I'm stoned and drunk and having fun onstage! FUNNY STORY: in my first band, my lead singer was such an idiot who couldn't remember his OWN songs that I HAD TO WRITE OUT THE LYRICS ON SHEETS OF PAPER and I taped them to the floor. HA: my singer grabbed the sheets and put his foot up on a stage monitor like most singers.... but he had taped the lyrics... TO HIS LEG so he could see them easier!!(Above his knee!) HA!

I don't think "declined" is the right word. Sure, it's changed and he can't the old stuff anymore, but he's become an amazing soul singer. His work on Infinite is spot on.

In case you guys aren't aware, EVERY singer's voice declines with age..! It's the one nasty truth about being a singer, that the vocal chords etc just deteriorate over time and it's normal for a singer to lose as much as a couple of octvaes from their range by the time they get older. Check out Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Bruce Dickinson, Geddy Lee etc etc. Not one of them can hit the same crazy shrill highs that they once did, especially after years of live touring and often excessive partying. It's a sad fact about being a vocalist. I'm not stating that some surgery didn't mess Gillian up or what have you though, just trying to shed some light on a sad fact of a vocalist's life. :)

@@bateriayvr8988 We obviously knew, smart ass. Nonetheless, its a shame Gillan lost his voice, imo the best rocker voice there ever was or is. Glen Hughes still has a crazy good voice though, somehow.
