In this episode, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, talk about the art of Thich Nhat Hanh, represented by his deeply meaningful calligraphies.
They consider their favourite calligraphies by Thich Nhat Hanh, and some of his most popular work, as well as the process behind it, and its significance, context, words, and wisdom (“the fruit of the meditations”).
Brother Phap Huu, Thich Nhat Hanh’s former attendant, shares how Thay created some of his famous calligraphies, the lessons learned, and the brother’s own journey through the art of calligraphy.
He also delves into calligraphy as something offering “directions for life”, and as a representation of the mind and the present moment; art as meditation; and vulnerability.
And, did you know that there is literally tea in Thay’s calligraphy?
Jo recollects a calligraphy demonstration by Thich Nhat Hanh in New York. He further muses on “the golden nuggets” of the mindfulness practice; flow; the embedded energy in each drawing; appreciation of all life; and looking deeply into suffering.
Also, do you know the zen story of the farmer who had one son?
The episode ends with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu, to express gratitude for the humans in our lives.
[This episode was recorded in December 2021 at Sitting Still Hut in Plum Village, France.]

Thanks for the interesting and exciting podcast. Each of you has revealed your feelings and inner world related to the unique texts written by Thich Naht Hanh as work of art in calligraphy. I myself am an artist and wrote in calligraphy the following sentence: Art is the light in my life. Art becomes meditation.

I always wondered in which school did Brother Phap Huu studied here in Toronto. So, I gathered that he didn’t live in the city for too long considering he joined the monastery when he was mere 16 years old. The way out is in, you couldn’t have chosen a better title for these vlogs. Very becoming. Very Thich Nhat Hanh! The reflection and the child within are two of my favourite. Thank you. Keep with the good work.

@@phaphuu you made the right decision Brother Phap Huu. I wish I were a young woman and I’d really contemplate joining the Monastic life; very appealing although I hear it also has its own issues. What is the matter with humans, Brother? Thank you for replying and addressing my question. For some reason I thought you had attended Palmerston Junior School. I was already grown up and living here when the so called ‘boat people’ started to arrive; really? what was wrong with recognizing them for who they were? People in need of being accepted and welcomed. I’m sorry you were misplaced and uprooted from home into a foreign land -- two such different places ... you must've felt like a fish out of water. I have lived here for 50 yrs and I know it isn’t easy. I understand just too well. But remember: beauty comes from the suffering; and, oh, i know suffering of the worst kind and inflicted by my own parents! May the spirit of the great Thich Nhat Hanh guide you today, tomorrow and always. Thank you Brother Phap Huu. Kindest regards
