A 3 time BJJ world champion and 2x brazilian national champion with an 80% submission rate... Nicholas Meregali is arguably the best and most exciting gi submission grappler in the world. Now training under John Danaher, the heights he can reach is scary.

I may be going out on limb but his pressure passing this time was very similar to Roger Gracie. Also if you remember Danahar is a true fan of Roger's. I think maybe Danahar studied Roger's game and implemented it into Meregalli's game. I may be reaching but, if you compare the two, it's crazy similar.

Danaher def took inspiration from Roger. It's not exactly guard passing, but in a video with Bernardo Faria, Danaher mentioned that the two greatest grapplers in his opinion are Roger Gracie and Gordon Ryan, both of whom often prefer the mount compared to side control.

Danaher’s philosophy is control (as opposed to position) leads to submission. This was on full display by Meregalli. Roger has a similar philosophy emphasizing control. Control in all positions leads to dominance.

100%. Roger’s competition coach was Renzo. He’s spend 3-6 months a year in NY prepping for major tournaments. Danaher learnt from Renzo. Danaher also watched and questioned Roger a lot when he trained every day at Renzo’s. 100% Danaher’s gi approach is based on Roger’s game

Nicholas uses Uchi Mata since he is a purple belt. He had judo training under SOGIPA, wich had elite judo practicioners in Brazil

Excellent breakdown of Merigalis performance at PANS and the visible improvement his game has made. I can see the Roger influence that has been inserted into his game. This is a great video to study for my personal library. I love his uchi mata and leg lasso. ❤

Dude seriously awesome work, I noticed as well meregali utilizing X-guard more than normal. Most of his entries were off of the cobrinha style HQ entry. Would be cool to dive more into that and X guard in general

Thank you! I’m not too familiar with Corbinhas game since I really got into the competitive scene toward the tail end of his career. But yea x guard is the main guard I’m personally trying to improve on. I’ve been doing lasso only for too many years and it’s hurt me so bad when I go and try to train No Gi 😅

Great stuff and great to hear the comparison with Roger's style of pressing/passing/finishing (old school BJJ) just as I was making that exact observation.

Just a little correction, he did not hit any bow and arrow chokes they were all cross collar chokes

Yea sorry I’m just so used to referring to them as bow and arrow. But yup you’re totally right.
@0b3ryn29
@0b3ryn29 Жыл бұрын
Cross collar chokes are from the front. Danaher calls what Meregali did, a sliding collar strangle. Bow and arrow is a variation of the sliding collar strangle.
@xtremebjj8545
@xtremebjj8545 Жыл бұрын
@@0b3ryn29 well I guess you can always get more specific but a bow and arrow choke implies that you are also gripping the leg which he isnt

@@xtremebjj8545 you’re right. We also call this the zipper choke
@0b3ryn29
@0b3ryn29 Жыл бұрын
@@xtremebjj8545 there's a reason Danaher is so specific with his terminology and why bow and arrow is more correct than cross collar. The sliding collar strangle and the more specific variation, the bow and arrow, have different mechanics than the cross collar. In the cross collar, both arms strangle, while in the sliding collar, only 1 arm is strangling, while the other is preventing opponent from turning with the strangling arm. I'm just relaying info from his strangling dvd.
