YES!!! Thank you that for that intelligent analysis. I have probably watched the whole series (both one and two) (never mind - it’s scary). The very light and comedic surface overlays a masterpiece that shows great respect for the story and its audience.

I've watched lots of Heartstopper reactions but I don't think anyone has explained WHY Charlie is so insistent on doing Nick's maths homework to the point that after Nick refuses his help Charlie then tries to snatch the worksheet away from Nick. It just seems excessive.

I wonder if it is because thats the only way Charlie feels he can make Nick like him. Charlie has to do something for Nick to get that approval, becasue that is what Ben would have expected, and now Charlie doesn't know any other way. But yes I agree, it is a little excessive.

I’ve always just chalked it up to a combination of Charlie wanting to please, and just friendly banter. It was awkward, but remember they are only 14 and 16 at this point. Not sure there’s more to it than that.

@@jcs1025 I can't imagine doing such a thing even at 14. But then when I was that age I couldn't imagine having a Nick Nelson either and couldn't wait to leave school so I could start looking.

@@bingleyausten the whole point of that scene is for them to flirt, so the homework was just a contrivance to get us there. Maybe not a very elegant way, but teenagers are awkward. I really don’t think there’s anything more to it than that.

I wrote a little story to interpret this for myself (and as with many stories, I upped the angst very slightly - I do appreciate how low-angst and low-drama HS actually is). In my version, Charlie is trying to impress his friendly form-mate by showing off his math skills - he knows he is more than good enough at math to help anyone at his school, no matter the grade. When Nick grabs Charlie's hand to draw on it, though, this is a shock to Charlie - it's not an attack, but it's sudden, and Charlie is already struggling with lack of boundaries in his abusive relationship with Ben. He's also been mistreated by other rugby lads in the past. He is so distracted by all this that he then makes his mistake with Ben by speaking to him in the corridor. They have been completely secretive for months, so Ben's hostility is borne of surprise, along with jealousy that Charlie is walking with Nick. I like to use fanfic to explore characters' interiority and ask all the little "what-ifs" that make a show like this so fascinating.
