Without realising it Jane proposed to Rochester when she came upon him on her return to thornfield. She said wherever he is is her home. That was enough for him to know her heart.

Mr Rochester is a typical Byronic character, he is moody, a rebel (he had a mistress), he has a dark secret, a troubled past, he's a bit of a loner, doesn't follow the social norms of the day and can show acts of violence. He is also incredibly cunning, hence why he can lie to Jane to get his own way. He desperately loves Jane because he sees what he isn't in her, she is his complete opposite in every aspect of his life. She is independent, innocent but head strong, infact, morally, Jane is Rochester's superior (even if they see eachother as equals). Rochester is a highly sexually charged man and his actions shows this by begging Jane to stay with him (to become his mistress, whether it was intentional) despite him already being married. He is a flawed man but a man that knows when he has met his soul mate in Jane, however, being bound by his past, he stops at nothing to get her. It is his Byronic character that is his downfall, he could have told her about his wife but in his eyes that was not EVER going to be an option, he had to be seen as the equal of Jane and not the man that is a Liar.

No, highly flawed but not a narcissist. He is selfish, deceitful, but he also has empathy, actually a high degree of emotional empathy where Jane is concerned. Narcissists pretend to be selfless and sympathetic but they are really incapable of empathy. The word narcissist is overused, which is a shame because it's important to use it properly. If Rochester was a narcissist he would have been on his best behaviour around her, felt no remorse for deceiving her, he would have flattered her, gaslighted her, mentally abused her and destroyed her self-esteem until she felt confused, worthless, and helpless to leave him. Then once he had succeeded in marrying her, he would have told her she was useless, ugly, etc, and discarded her or simply ignored her and treated her with contempt.

He gaslighted her with no remorse when she came to him scared telling him a lady visited her at night and torn her veil ;) look beyond what fantasy can do to redeem a character in the end ;) he is highly narcissistic, I am not overusing the word at all, I am actually an expert in npd ;) and empathy cannot be towards just one person ;) that's actually, again, narcissistic behaviour ;)

Прекрасный фильм я читала книгу запоем, прекрасно поставлен артисты играют великолепно Эйр такая молодая умная девушка верующая, а Эдвард красавец я влюбилась Далтона он великолепно сыграл эту роль и самый лучший фильм 1983г.Пусть им двоим будет удача, благополучия и счастья.

I love Jane Eyre; she is one of my favorite female characters. Her independence, innocence, mentality. The way she expresses herself towards Edward and how she tells him to not endow her with precious jewels or dresses, but to love her for herself as herself. Something I would express quite similar to the man I love. Not to put me on “display” in public, but allow me to be myself as the woman he loves. These two actors portray the leads quite handsomely, although I do prefer Toby Steven’s version. He’s more emotional in my opinion, but this Jane is high on my list. This may sound silly, alas I am a vivid reader lol, I hope to one day meet my Rochester, Darcy, or Erik (Phantom). Oui, mon cheri, je t’aime tellemont! ❤️

I can understand why Rochester refuses to tell Jane about Bertha in order to protect her but attempting to marry Jane while still married is wrong

That is precisely the author’s point and it’s why he gets humbled by being blinded and having his house burnt down to atone for that sin. Once he repents, Jane returns and they live happily ever after and have kids.

He knew damn well that what she saw was REAL, but keeps saying "It is all your imagination." Was this his plan if the wedding went through? To live happily ever after in that house, with the undeniable presence of her "imanation"???

His plan was to take her from Thornfield to a villa in southern France on the shores of the Mediterranean, and reveal the truth to her far from there. Basically, he wanted to "secure" her, keep her by his side at all costs. I quote from the book: "I was wrong to attempt to deceive you; but I feared a stubbornness that exists in your character. I feared early instilled prejudice: I wanted to have you safe before hazarding confidences. This was cowardly: I should have appealed to your nobleness and magnanimity at first, as I do now-opened to you plainly my life of agony-described to you my hunger and thirst after a higher and worthier existence-shown to you, not my RESOLUTION (that word is weak), but my resistless BENT to love faithfully and well, where I am faithfully and well loved in return. Then I should have asked you to accept my pledge of fidelity and to give me yours."

Pobre Jane sufrió toda su vida, y justo cae en un lugar donde el amo la trata con dureza. Apesar que ella le cuenta su historia sin padres, su crianza en el internado desde los 10 años y la severidad del clérigo. La JOVEN Jane está muy enamorada, ya volverá ser la Jane de antes que no se dejaba maltratar. Ya no será su amo será su esposo, que se prepare Mr. Rochester.

Muy linda historia...! Viéndola en el año 2020, octubre primaveral en Chile. El campo Inglés es parecido al antiguo campo chileno ,muy verde, con prejuicios , soledades humanas, dolores, amores incomprendidos, los carruajes son mucho más elegantes, al fin del mundo ,mi abuela usaba loza inglesa, que prestaba a vecinos...para uso de alguna boda!... Felicitaciones por tan bonita película!

He is gaslighting her, it's terrible. As a narcissistic abuse survivor, I hate this despite loving Bronte and her book, Mr. Rochester is narcissistic many times.

I suppose in real life he would be, however narcissistic people are unable to love and feel empathy. Edward is a wounded soul but a good man: he sheltered Adele and even someone else (I'm not spoiling), he proposed to Jane because he loves her as his own flesh and knows that she feels the same for him. He's done with society and conventions, he believes Jane's happiness lies with him. Therefore he's not a narcissist. The question is, is his character only fictional...?!

@@barbarav4046 as I said before... this fantasies of a good man that gaslights and manipulates and so on, but loves, make real girls and women who read the book or see this movie, beleive that their abuser is just the same ;) it is very dangerous... and unfortunatelly media is full of it, almost all movies of all time, all music, many love stories and especially modern music and movies. Rochester redemption is based on the author's religion and faith. She had to redeem him, but in real life... such a man would never have... Also you take too lightly his atrempt at bigamy or living unwed with her gives those times. It was a terrible terrible abuse towards Jane. And he did not sheltered and love that child Adele, read the book. This is the only movie version in which he acts like a father towards her. In all the others he despises her and treats her badly.

@@barbarav4046 sorry. I thought I was commenting on the Ciaran Hinds version of Rochester when I said he was like a father to Adele. Nope, in this version, he despised her and treated her badly and I hate that Jane sees that, recognisez his abuse and still loves him... it told her what kind of a man he is. Can you imagine how Adele grew up with a dead mother and a father figure that hated her? As abused as Jane did... emotionally at least. That is terrible and inhumane. He had no right to do that.

Lord Byron (1788-1824), fue un poeta inglés cuya obra se hizo famosa de la noche a la mañana. Era el estereotipo del héroe romántico, viajado, amante de la aventura en todas sus formas, a la ratos profundamente generoso y amable, a ratos cruel e indomable. Byron murió muy joven, de camino a Grecia, donde esperaba apoyar la independencia, y sus amigos quemaron sus memorias por considerarlas demasiado inmorales. Una de sus amantes lo definió como "mad, bad and dangerous to know": loco, malvado y peligroso". Su forma de vivir se convirtió en un tópico para definir a ese tipo de hombre, que fundamentalmente aparece (como Rochester) en Jane Eyre o en Cumbres Borrascosas (Heathcliff, también encarnado por Timothy Dalton en una película), novela de Emily Brontë.
