Deer have been ravaging our summer garden, so we tried a few things to keep them out. First, 30lb test fishing line, 8 feet up, every 6 inches for the first 4 feet, then every foot above that. After that, 6 ft tall welded wire with the top two strands of fishing line still up at 7 and 8 feet up.

I appreciate this so much! I recently moved to a house where deer love the yard. I've been gardening since childhood but never had deer issues. It was discouraging to see them chomp tomatoes and pumpkins, which I have found on "deer resistant" lists. I'm planning a Tsun Tsu approach before I even till the ground - it's an all-fronts war against these grifters!

I find that effective repellents/deterrents are 1) row or bed covers if feasible; also place unstable objects around your plants as deer don't like walk on such. 2) strong scented perennial plants such as fast growing mints, lavenders, sages, etc. sprinkled throughout the garden. 3) time. Animals are creatures of habit. They tend to follow and repeat what works. As they learn that your space is undesirable, they will stop, and teach their young the lesson.

I have never tried fishing line for deer. I know for a fact that it works for birds. I had a horrible problem with bluebirds and crows eating my bean sprouts, entire rows 40+ plants gone. Dug up as soon as they start to peek out. Connect each pole to each other pole at the top with fishing line creating a web over the top of the entire garden. At just the right angle it glistened in the setting sun. Like lazers protecting a bank vault in the movies, a 3D aerobatic maze. It was a sight to behold. For a few years the garden was a no fly zone. The major problem with fishing line is durability (turkeys are bigger than bluebirds), winter/snow (maybe the contraction in cold or the snow load, I don't know, it actually snapped most of the 1.5 X 1.5 inch wooden poles we where using). And don't forget about cleanup, that almost invisible broken line WILL get tangled in the lawn mower. I have some more ideas for version 3.

Can you please be more specific in how you did it? I love that idea. Why would it get caught in the lawn mower if you send you did that for the top?

I have found that the best deer deterrent is a Winchester, even if you are not too skilled with your Winchester it sure makes a point like no other deer deterrent and the bigger the better, Remington will also work. Lead poisoning is a terrible thing. Since I live near others, I use only chicken wire, barb wire, and my latest fishing line fence, and I have no landscaping left and will not reinvest in that again! The deer love my cucumber leaves, and Iam not too happy about that ether.

I used fishing line criss crossed across my back yard. it let me know where the pest traffic, both deer and human, were going though. it didn't stop them, but I could see where they snapped the line, what their preferred paths were. I hope you were able to expand your garden. With that big flat space there, it looks like a perfect landing zone for some over eager deer with a running start! LOL Thanks for the Video.

I pin down my fences with garden staples because the little terrors will go under fences in a heartbeat to gain entry... I like the 3-D fence with heavy twine that causes them to be unable to get to the fence like they did before - about 2 to 3 feet from the garden fence - Just this simple addition put the incursions to an end... I put my fence up with bamboo risers on the t-posts up to 9 feet and that put a stop to the insanity as well - They simply cannot make the jump...

Just go to your local farm store and get a few cattle fence panels, they come in various lengths and strengths. They will be able to advise you on what to get, you can also string barb wire or electric strains along the stop if you want to keep them from jumping over…

Visual blocking works too, with a breathable lawn fabric. They won't try to eat what they can't see.

That's an interesting idea, but a visual barrier sounds like it would provide shade to some plants. I'd rather stick with something that doesn't block any light for our garden.

Thanks for making the video. It's been 3 years since you've put up what looks like 6 foot welded wire and it looks like you kept the fishing line in place above that. In all that time, have ANY deer made their way back into your garden? Thanks.

Thanks! No deer have jumped the fence. One time a few months ago my wife accidentally left the gate open for a few hours, and a deer walked right in. At least that let us know they'd like to get in there, and the fence is the deterrent!

@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm 6 foot fencing of ANY type is NOT high enough to keep deer out of a garden. Any healthy adult deer can EASILY jump any 6 foot high fence. There has to be a taller barrier OR the design must be multi-layered fencing that gives deer too much to overcome. So don't waste time with shorter layers. Go up at least 8 feet. BTW, if a deer has space to get a running start, most deer can clear even an 8 foot fence but they also need a safe, open landing zone inside the garden. Thus 8 foot is enough in most...but not all....cases to keep deer out. The absence of deer from your garden at this point in time is not proof that bolder deer won't jump your fencing eventually. I've been gardening on my 20 acres for 15 years. Got tons of game camera footage of lots of deer who approach but never challenge the fencing. But also have footage of bold deer laughing as they jump over short fencing to decimate my plants! Every deer is different. Some just play it safe. Dogs are not a good deterrent to deer either. Most dogs know they can't catch the deer and usually just remain content to lay there watching the deer feast. Unless you pen the dog inside the garden, the deer will just ignore the dog and do as they please. Good luck fencing them out!

@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm Let's hope they stay out! My mileage has been very different from yours. In Mississippi, during August and September primarily the hot, dry conditions cause nearly all the native plants to dry up and be unappealing to the deer. Hunter food plots won't produce new food until late October and November. So for at least 2 months the deer have less food available than at any other time of the year and it comes when does are lactating and bucks are trying to fatten up before rut. REALLY HUNGRY deer will go to great lengths to gain access to a lush, well watered family garden. Not to mention the efforts of raccoons, possums, crows, rabbits, and other critters who also enjoy juicy garden veggies! My land borders urban areas where there are no agricultural fields for miles. Gardens become the top food source for deer at this time of the year in my location. So the bold deer will jump 6 foot fences without hesitation. These deer here see people and dogs endlessly every single day so they have learned which dogs are penned and when people are not usually out. They are VASTLY different from deer who live in remote rural areas and who tend to fear people and dogs. If you think I am kidding, check out a 20 minute video posted on my channel where I opened a rear window of my house one night and filmed two young bucks and a doe feeding in my backyards. They spent several minutes being as close as 8 feet from me with NOTHING....not even a window screen....between me and them. We could see each other blink. I watched them....they watched me. But the point is the deer were not afraid to be right out in the open with me present and them only feet from my garden and my house. The big doe went right up to the garden fence with me watching her. If she had jumped the fence I'd have had video of it to show you just how bold they are and how easy they clear my 6 foot fence.

You can't keep them from jumping over you need to make them not want to . If they can't land without getting injured they won't jump as a broken leg means they will be eaten alive. So make it difficult to land.

Hah, I wish! He's not well trained enough to be trusted to roam freely, as he's just as likely to chase the chickens as the deer. I hope that with continued obedience training we can get him to the point where he roams the home site, keeps deer away from the garden, but is also safe around our farm animals. We will see!

@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm congrats! LOL. A little more than some fish line was required, but you used equipment and resources on hand to help build an effective deer deterrent . tried electric fence up to 6 strands 6 ft high, then electronic barking dogs, then motion activated sprinklers. One night a deer was standing out there inside the electric fence, dog barking taking a shower. That was my limit so I ate him. Working on an eight foot fence now. Anyone know where I casn get land mines if that don't work.

@@Green_Heart_Family_Farm I love how ppl say a 6ftr wont work yet you’ve kept them out for over a year … as you keep telling them. I’m quite sure you’ll cross that bridge when you get to it if the deer do get in again. Every situation is different and maybe the type of deer in your region is different than in mine, etc etc. I have deer eating from my bird feeders, someone commented on using cayenne. I’ll give that a try. I don’t have a garden and only plant flowers for the birds bees and hummers and am able to plant what’s appealing to them but are thankfully deer resistant plants. Silly question but your garden looks far from any water spigot, how do you water your plants? I’m old and have flowers about 45ft + from house so I have to haul the hose to water and I’m always looking for an easier and cheap way to do that. Thank you for the video, beautiful family and don’t let anyone rain on your parade young man.
