Something not right with this buck. I don't know if it's the rut but if it is that is a dangerous game to play with a buck at that time. Plenty of videos and stories of men being attacked by a buck and some of them were killed.

While hunting one day towards the very end of the rut we came across a buck in a field. Standing up, head down to the ground, tongue hanging out. We literally walked up to it like these guys did. We thought it was a fake deer the game wardens put out as we were on a park boundary but we were on our private property side. The deer was totally exhausted from running does n breeding. We didn't think he was going to make it at all. I mean he was skin n bones but low n behold, a few weeks later there he was running does again as the next phase of the rut kicked in. These deer have a will to survive like no other. I've seen then out back in my yard with gashes in the back of their neck from either getting cut on a barb wire fence or gouged from fighting. I mean puss dripping down the side of their neck. He had to literally lean back on his hind legs to get down to the ground to eat. I put a small gravity feeder around a tree with high protein feed in it for him so he didnt have to bend down. Also we had like 4 snow storms back to back that year. I out out some regular hay with a full bail of 2nd cut western alfalfa. That buck would come in my yard, lay on the hay at dusk. Eat the western alfalfa and protein feed all night till sunrise. Then he would walk off into the wood line and bed down. He did that for 2 months. Then all of a sudden, there he was, standing up, bending his neck down to eat and walking around like nothing happened. We saved that deers life. Then I shot him the next year as a 155" 10 pointer. JUST KIDDING!! That deer is still around till this day. Hes about 6 1/2 now with a small 8pt rack maybe 120" but hes a fighter till the end. Also had yearling with busted hoofs hopping around out back eating. I feed these deer all winter. Give them about 30lbs of corn a day, 15lbs of high protein b16 feed and a 100lbs bail of western alfalfa on a pallet laying on the ground so it stays dry. I have about 30 to 40 deer out back every evening and not one of them ever thanked me for helping them through winter. Even tho they dont need my help, it still feels good to give back n help the 1 1/2 year olds make it through their 2nd winter especially if they were born very late last year and this years fawn make it through their 1st winter. I figure all the deer I killed hunting over the years, its the least I could do to give back yo them.

You are 100% correct. During the rut, a bucks brain function is consumed by the need to breed. They can't process normal fear at the same time. I've seen bucks do some strange things during the rut. I had on walk right up to me after I hit it with a grazing shot from my black powder rifle, flesh wound only. He didn't even know he was injured, never reacted to the blast, nothing; just stood there looking for a doe in heat ( that didn't exist ). I'm just glad he didn't try to mount me. LOL

Ann M I think animals are intuitive more than smart. They know they will die unless something changes and I think most animals know humans are at the top of the food chain. So the deer might in essence be saying "please end me quick or help in some way". Basically a last ditch effort.

Brian Dwiggins we snared a wild rabbit intending to turn him into stew. He was a very cute little guy with a white nose.... We ended up keeping him as a pet and calling him snuffles. After two years we released him back into the wild. he came back a year later when he was all cut up half alive from a raccoon or coyote trying to eat him. Even though he was wild he knew we were there to helm him he came back to us. We nursed him back to health over two months and we let him go again! The last time we saw him was one morning on our front lawn he was eating some grass with a beautiful female rabbit. He came back to say thank you!
