Got a question from a viewer who is trying to decide between the Deere 3E and 3R series of tractor. Nikola was originally comparing a John Deere 3039R and a 3038E, trying to decide whether to purchase the economy model (E) or the deluxe model (R). That's an easy answer for me based on 25 years experience with buyer psychology. Get the 3R series.
If you're a bargain buyer like me, you just want the most horsepower for the cheapest price. So, I wouldn't even be considering the 3R unless there was an abundance of inventory and the price was really close to the 3E. I'm not willing to pay for a lot of bells and whistles.
But, if you're like Nikola and you've closely analyzed the options and you really like the features of the 3R, but are trying to decide if they're worth it or not, you'll probably never be happy with the 3E. Same situation applies to people who are wrestling with whether or not to buy a cab tractor. If you go the cheap route and get an economy tractor, or get a tractor without a cab, you'll always be wishing you had spent the money and gotten what you really wanted. So, if you're on a budget or just not even considering a deluxe tractor, go the cheap route, if you're on the fence, get the deluxe tractor.
Nikola ended up writing me a second e-mail to ask about comparing the 3038E with the 3033R. So, now the choice is between an economy tractor with more horsepower or a deluxe tractor with exactly 5 hp less. Would you notice losing 5 hp? In my opinion, while 5 hp is a large percentage of the total, if all implements are matched to that horsepower range, you'd not see a noticeable difference between the two. Most of the time, horsepower on small tractors is not a limiting factor to anything you do. In my mind, a more important consideration is front end loader lift capacity.
So, I went on Deere's website and compared the 3038E and the 3033R lift capacity and it wasn't even close. The 3032R has over 400 lbs. more lift capacity that the 3038E which has more horsepower. That probably means the deluxe tractor has a bigger hydraulic pump and/or more weight. That makes the decision much easier...get the 3033R.
Finally, I want to complain to all the manufacturers for failing to fully differentiate the economy and deluxe series that most offer. Deere, Kubota Massey, New Holland, Mahindra, Kioti, LS, all have an economy series of tractors and a deluxe series, and rather than make that distinction on their websites and in literature they tend to try to play up both tractors as being deluxe. It's really confusing for the first-time tractor buyers. I'm waiting for the manufacturer with the guts to show the economy and the deluxe tractor and tell exactly what the options are that are not included on the cheaper series. Dealers don't seem to have a problem with that, OEM's just can't admit they make a stripped down version in language that we all can understand. End of rant.

Actually, the 3033R is still way more expensive than the 3038E. I think Nicola changed from comparing a 3039R/3038E because the 39R is just so much more money, and even though so is the 33R, at least it’s more affordable in comparison. That said, I too considered the 3038E and 3033R and went with the R. The 33R lifts much more because the hydraulic pump has a considerably larger flow rate and the tractor more body weight - look at the axles, diffs and gearbox housing on the 33R, they are much more HD than on the 38E. And for my 5 acres, slashing and general duties, a 24 HP PTO is more than enough, but I do want maximum lift capacity. The 33R, 39R and 46R all have the same hydraulic setup and lift capacity so between those tractors it’s more a question of HP requirements. Love your vids Mike they have been invaluable to me. Regards from Down Under!

Another thing to consider is minimum HP requirements for any 3-point attachments you may want to use, and what each tractor can put out to the rear PTO.

Great video Mike, I have a 2013 3038E that just crossed 200 hours, it routinely pulls a 6' rotary mower, a 7' blade, and does a whole lot of loader work, two things I have noticed over the years, 1. The E series atleat in 2013 does not have split brakes and that has caused some trouble a few times in sticky situations on a hill side or if my blade is trying to steer the tractor a direction I don't want to go. 2. I bought a generator a few months ago and an R series loaded the generator just fine in my truck, I got home and my E series would not lift the generator off my truck, I had to use the forklift. I will say I can pickup some huge buckets of wet dirt and it dosen't fuss about that, I actually just moved around 30 tri-axle loads of top soil with my 3038E. I hope this helps I love the 38HP, I have only bogged my tractor one time when I discovered a spare tire while brush hogging and it got tangled up in the mower and let me tell you didn't give up easily, it caught me off guard and I will admit it ran a few seconds before I got the pto turned off, it sounded horrendous, honestly I believe 38HP is enough to tear things up on that frame size tractor if someone pushes it too hard.

I got the 3035D as well. It had the most advertised PTO and hydraulic volume of the 30ishHP 3 series and a better price than the hydrodrives and I did not want a turbo just to get 5 more PTO horses. I am still learning the instruments, (keep reaching to shift with the loader stick🤪 as a longtime automotive, shortime tractor operator)but am getting the hang. Mostly mowing and Lanesharking(which would have been out of reach buying a hydro drive), so far, but clutching and throwing the left side directional lever is getting easier and easier. The levers on each side of the seat are a bit tight, I am a big boy & typically bump the three point lever when buckling the seatbelt, but am getting better at those too.

I myself am going to to either get the JD 3R series or one of the smaller Kubota Grand L series. The reason being is that since I'm older I appreciate the extra features each of these manufacturers have on the series. The weight is important in order for some of the heavier attachments that our family will be using connected to the front loader down the road. You have to have enough weight in order to handle them even with ballast in the back. Also the extra features like the ease of taking off the loader is an important time saver. Also, they both have the loader shifter very close to the seat whereas they're more economical models of both brands have the loader shifter further away.

Working for a manufacturer, I feel the pain on talking about economy vs. premium. Then add to that (in our case) where you originally planned for a stripped-down economy model but the consistent feedback from dealers was that they didn't want another stripped-down model because they were losing deals on the stripped-down model, and so we added the metaphorical kitchen sink back to the tractor and ended up with an "economy" tractor that was equipped as well as or better than our existing "premium" model. So we decided to call them "value" models.

I find the Deere website quite easy to understand. Then again, I've been using Ram and Chevy websites for years. Luckily, I learned in the '70s that some companies expect their customers to either be educated and discerning on the subject matter or be trusting gullible saps that don't really like to make decisions and need to be spoon-fed small little bitesized pieces of certain information. The kind of people that get frustrated at all the choices when going into a Walmart looking just for a pair of "jeans", and find all the different brands and styles. "Do I get flexible or standard, boot cut or straight legged? Do I need a coin pocket or cargo pockets?"

Agreed. As a newbie in 2018, I decided to go with a JD 2038R over a 3038E and a 3039R. I don't regret my decision (much) but I didn't know anything about hydraulics and the hydro specs didn't have much meaning to me at the time. If I were doing it again now, hydraulic capability would be at the top of my list of considerations!

I am an owner of the 3032E tractor and love it, but do recognize the difference in horsepower and work within it's limitations. I thought about buying the "R" series, but didn't want a cab or the extra features it had on it. I already had a 2002 790 tractor and it works great also and the main difference is that the 790 has a standard transmission where the new one has the automatic transmission.

Great timing. I’m considering trading in my one year old 3025E for a 3033R. Two reasons: lift capacity and more comfortable seat. The rigid seat frame of my 3025E is murder on my bad back, even after modifying it with an aftermarket suspension platform. The 3033R has an OE suspension seat that should provide a much better ride. My Deere dealer says all of the loader quick attachments I have are interchangeable between the two tractors.

Good job. I think the R. Is heavier so they could use a better loader. I have 2. 3025e. In landscape business both have been pushed to the max doing hurricane cleanup after Michael in Florida one has 800 hrs trouble free the other is personal use with low hours. I prefer the deere for landscape because it out turns the kubota which is key when working in yards. I say trouble free but the key thing is I do the maintenance per the book

I can tell you in my research John Deere was way over priced for what your getting. This statement might cause someone's head to turn, but there are many other great brands out there other than JD and Kubota. Suggest you look at both JD and Kubota but once you settle on one, then look at the "less popular" brands in the class you are looking for. You might be pleasantly surprised. Oh...and don't forget to research the dealership and it's customer relations.

If you are mostly using it as a big lawn mower the E series might be right for you (wont tear up lawns as much, less unstable load issues). If you need to pick up heavy items or use ground engaging equipment the D or R series might meet your needs better. He is right the web sites show lots of models but don't explain advantages and disadvantages of each. They go by acreage which is code for how much you will be using it and for what types of tasks.

The main difference is the frame, front axle and rear end. The E series has lower lift capacity because the front axle housing is lighter and can't handle the extra weight. The E series has an aluminum rear end whereas the R series has a heavy cast iron rear end made for backhoe and real work.
