The Rest Of The Story

The Rest Of The Story

4 жыл бұрын

Well I gotta say I try to make these videos in a way that they're pretty much self explanatory. Any way for those of you that haven't seen my videos before, they're about the day in and day out life on a crop and cattle farm in southwest Wisconsin. I try to avoid doing to much editing in my videos and keep them as close to the original raw footage as I can because lets be honest farming isn't edited as I live it.

I'm sure there's a lot of money tied up in that machine beyond the $40k for the NCVs. Much like Big Tractor Power has repeatedly said in regard to the very large equipment in his area, the efficiency gained by using such large equipment is what makes it worthwhile in the right business conditions. Thanks, Andrew, for giving Travis the opportunity to film this machine in operation. Travis and Brittany, happy belated wedding anniversary! Hopefully, "Crutch" is a nickname that doesn't stick for too long.

Spraying was my favorite job on the farm. A used sprayer, even an old 6700 Hi-Cycle could be worth it for you, or a larger pull type rig would work. In NC, tobacco and cotton require many passes in any given year, so almost every farm has its own sprayer or multiple sprayers. Read the chem labels, and wear the protective equipment & you’ll be fine. Spray into the wind if you’re using an open station tractor!

Just so amazing to me to see all of the new technology there is in todays farm equipment. So many new apparatus & features that make farming more efficient in so many ways. Really enjoy watching & learning about todays farming on this channel & Ryan's channel as well. I think of the two channels as being a extension of one another. Thanks as always Travis and was great seeing you out and about with your lovely wife as we. Take care till next time.

There's a lot of things every person doesn't care to do... I don't care to spray or do trucking, but it's one of things that must be done. There's a lot of good pulltype sprayers instead of getting a self-propelled. We've been running a Summers ultimate for many years and has been decent.

You could pickup a pull behind sprayer fairly cheap. We used to run one many years and being you have gps in the 4640 it’d actually make it pretty easy to run.

"Nobody is really interested in running..." You guys got to stop saying that so much. If running the semi will save you money, I would be willing to run it to save money. If running a sprayer would save you money, I sure wouldn't be saying that I'm not interested in running a sprayer. My two cents, if they are even worth that much.

There's far more than the ' up front ' cost of the sprayer ! There's teh trainng time to be licensed to purchase/handle the chemicals . Then there's the storage requirements for those chemicals includidng spilll prevention, security and ventilation . And those chemicals literally eat your equipment, so prompt and thorough clean up plus maintensce is another time/cash cost . You already now about storage issues and most sprayers have a large footprint . And has you just saw, they're kinda delicate and its easy to stick teh end of that boom way out theare into something hard . Great video and a nice rig but as 'Heinline said, " there ain't no free lunch " !

Been spraying all of our own crops for over 25 years. It's really not that dangerous. Just takes common sense and the Equipment to do it. You are all capable of spraying. It would save you a ton and you would be able to get it all done when needed

You can also get a well equipped used sprayer for pretty decent prices. And theres pull types. And with big red around you guys could also get a flatbed trailer for keeping water and chemical supplied in the field, and then you can use that flatbed for hauling bales. There's also the possibility of picking up the odd bit of custom work with it, maybe not with the goal of paying for the thing, but to take a bit of the edge off the payments.

If I were u when it comes to sprayers get a pull type with 90ft booms and 800 or 1000 galon tank keep the duals on on the 4640 and run it with that. Gives it something to do in the summer!

Only thing about getting a contractor in to spray vs doing it yourself is that they will be far more knowledgeable about what product has worked best in what condition in the past and what new product is available. That knowledge is half the battle with spraying.

Must be backwards around here... I know guys who can't make it pencil to have their own sprayer. They say it's liability. We've always had our own. Years ago it was a 30' 3 point 100 gallon. Built one in 1982, on an old pickup chassis, 300 gallon tank, started with the old 30' booms, quickly built new 50' booms but on the same center frame. Later built all new, all hydraulic 62'.... Some say it's not enough, but in hill ground, sometimes 62' is almost too much. The old chassis has about lived it's life, picked up a "Wolverine" three wheeled chassis. (Made by a company that was near Sublimity Oregon) it needs to be completely rebuilt, but once it's done, it will out live me.... maybe. Going to use the old components and add some electronics😎 (Everything is here, just has to get put together) wouldn't mind adding full GPS, but steep hills mess it up. Yes, only a 300 gallon tank!!! Keeps it light weight for those wet spots!!! At 5gpa, we still cover the ground 😎 Most chemicals aren't too bad to mess with, gloves and glasses or face shield. Best thing to do is have a full cab! No reason anyone should get any on them then. A mixing cone helps too. Thanks for showing off what most of us can't afford.... We can all dream 😎

It is all in the safe handling. Due to several lobbying and cases a number of years ago here the industry in order to protect our use of plant protection products and show that we used them responsibily and safely the Voluntary Initiative was formed as part of that to be able to use them you had to not only take and pass courses in the safe handling and relevant application method even just to use a knapsack sprayer but you also have to show that you are continuing to improve and keep up with improvements and techniques legislation. You also have to have non pedestrian sprayers tested each year to make sure they are in good working order and don't drop etc. Most sprayers of your kind of size both Self Propelled, mounted and trailed have not only facilities to wash the containers but clean lockers to place PPE in such as chemical overalls, boots, gloves, mask and faceshield for when handling the neat products. It is why the current court cases in California wouldn't see the inside of a court here as if the person suing had been given the correct PPE and hadn't worn it they would be responsible for their own position, if they had not been given the correct or faulty PPE it would be their employers in court the only times their would be the chemical manufacturer in court would be if they hadn't put the correct information on the product label or there was a problem with the product like contamination and they had not either recalled that batch or had not disposed of it responsibly. If you use them responsibily there should be nothing to fear from them

I don’t understand why everyone is scared of spraying because of the chemicals. I’ve sprayed for over 20 years and my dad 30. We just touch everything bare handed and just wash everything off. I understand why people don’t like spraying on their own especially with all the permits especially if you do custom spraying as we do. I would definitely suggest purchasing a sprayer. The amount of money people us to spray their crops has justified a new sprayer every four years ten fold. Then again nobody but us really had a row crop sprayer in our area.

A pull type sprayer would be most cost effective
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for sure to start with. You have to have a lot of acres or making multiple applications per season on all your acres to make a big self propelled pencil out... Course if you're talking a smaller, cheaper, older self propelled then its a lot easier to justify the cost, but the upkeep and maintenance is higher on a SP versus a pull type. They already have all the GPS and autosteer stuff so a pull type would easily make their money back and maximize the equipment they already have... We always did all our own spraying except for one application a year-- defoliating cotton, which we usually hired a plane to do. We never had a high-boy until I picked up an old one and restored it a few years before we quit row cropping, after 9/11 doubled the cost of air service cropdusting within a year, it just didn't make sense to NOT buy a highboy and do it ourselves. A couple years we DID just spray the defoliant ourselves, when it wasn't too great a crop anyway and we were trying to save the cost of the aerial application-- wasn't losing much cotton getting knocked off the plants by the tractor since there wasn't much there those years anyway... Later! OL J R :)
