This scene led to one of the saddest scenes on the entire TV show. When dukie asked Michael did he remember doing this and by that time Michael had been through so much adult conflict that he could even remember having fun with his younger friends anymore.

That's not the way I see it. I think it s related to the scene with Avon and Stringer when they tell stories from when they were young but the next thing that happens is Stringer getting killed. He tried to lure Avon with nostalgia but it ended up killing him because that s not in the game (same thing with wallace getting shot by his friends while telling fond stories). It s not that he forgot, but him telling that made it easier to let go of Dukie and not involve him any further.
