CAN YOU USE DEF (DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID) AS FOOD PLOT FERTILIZER???? In this video I go over the analysis of DEF and tell you how much is needed to put a LB of nitrogen down. All food plots whether corn, soybeans, alfalfa, clover, turnips, radishes, cereal rye, winter wheat and oats all require fertilizer in order to grow and give whitetails quality nutrition needed to grow larger racks. is using DEF a viable option???

I bought 2.5 gallons of DEF for $8 at Farm & Fleet. It did a fantastic job greening up my lawn. And a bonus is it doesn’t burn it up. I have 3/4 acre of grass and fertilized my front yard twice and my back yard once. I am very pleased and so is my wallet. Still have a half a jug left (1 1/4 gal).

Forgot to mention, I don’t use Blue, I use cheaper brand from TSC. At least half the price of what you mentioned in the video

Nice! I didn’t to to much shopping around for it, just went to the auto parts stores and grabbed one. I’m not use to def since my truck doesn’t require it.

I sprayed 5 gallons of DEF mixed into 2 20 gallons tanks of water per acre as a foliar fertilizer last year in sunflowers with no other fertilizer and had an amazing head of sunflowers

I used Walmart brand DEF fluid and get it for $6.90 per 2.5 gallons. Tractor supply travelers brand 5 gallon buckets are also $14

I use it on my Lawn to maintain the color about every 3 weeks. I mix 5oz of DEF, 2oz of Magnesium Sulfate, and 2oz of Chelated Iron per Gallon of water. I have 1.5 acres of Lawn area and this the most economical and easiest for me to do with a 25 Gallon Tow behind tank sprayer compared to Granular Fertilizers.

Just for those that dont know, if you go to a fuel stop for tractor trailers, def is on a rack for $3ish dollars a gallon vs the 11-13 you pay per gallon in the jugs.

Using the DEF would be a good way to apply Nitrogen to started plants using the wand from a UTV sprayer, unless it’s possible to purchase a liquid Urea?

Yea you could use it for that. They do have 32% and 28% liquid nitrogen that is more nitrogen per gallon than def….farmers use it all the time to put nitrogen on corn and wheat. Worst part about spraying any nitrogen is it’s highly corrosive, sticky, and generally not a lot of fun to work with. When applying liquid nitrogen 32% or 28% special nozzles are used that stream the product out rather than spraying it. Thanks for watching.

Just curious... I have a mushroom factory near me that sells compost from mushrooms. What would happen and would it benifit a deer food plot.???

I can’t speak specific on mushroom compost, but compost is a good for soil amending and also a small amount of fertility. It likely would help the food plot, but would also be needed in large quantities b4 replacing fertilizers

What I would like to know is Can you spray the def on corn Or Brassica plants post emerge without hurting them?

James I’ve never done it, but I suspect it would burn corn and brassicas a little…with young corn or brassicas I doubt it would burn bad enough to actually hurt anything. If I was going to do that and I was worried about the potential burn I’d just apply it right before a rain event. Thanks for watching and great question.

If I added a jug of def to my 25 gallon sprayer with the rest water would it be to strong for my 1 acre food plot and could I also spray my screening I have a trucking company and I have def in 50 gallon drums so if it works why not

What is in the plot? And what is in the screening? Most screenings are some for of large grasses, so if that’s case then yes, they typically require large amounts of nitrogen. At that rate on the screen I doubt you will see any nitrogen burn, and even if you did it will grow out of it. Depending on what’s in the plot I may or may not use that in the plot.

Im not sure what is in the mixes, if it’s clover you wont need any nitrogen. Not sure where you located at but planting middle of summer can be difficult to achieve good results with high temperatures and lack of rainfall. Early fall is a great time to establish a wide variety of plots, so is early spring.

Dang Plot Professor, didn't know I was going to get a math lesson. (although I never liked learning math), But now you have me wondering if I PEE in a 2 1/2 gal jug how much of it is UREA instead of URINE? Got any way to figure that out?? lmbo

Garden like a Viking shows u how to dilute the urine. Search it here and it will blow your mind how good it works. I use it. Also go to a old tree in your woods get the white leaf mold and make fish emulsion Garden Like a Viking will also tell you how to break it down. It works amazing also just make sure you put a hole in the lid because it makes pressure. The best nitrogen to make is soak nettles in water and leaf mold. Check out Korean natural farming

He shows u how to make potash from wood ashes. That u can use right away urine also but the nettles and fish emulsion takes longer fish emulsion a couple months and it will be broken down in a black bucket in the heat. The nettles I fill garbage cans now and will use it next year

Great breakdown. Too bad seed didn't come coated in Nitrogen. It seems to me that if nitrogen broadcast around on the ground gets watered down enough to acually benefit plants like corn that can be 3 feet apart, then some nitrogen directly over the seed would put the nitrogen right where you need it.

Yes sir, actually with the newest corn planters they put a shot of fertilizer directly below the seed where the roots tap into in first thing. Great thoughts! Thanks for watching

Smokeless gunpowder is also a good form of nitrogen but also a lot more expensive than Urea Nitrate or Ammonium Nitrate.

@@DIYfoodplotpro All Modern Nitrogen Fertilizers come from an accidental discovery made by Scientists trying to create explosive using Nitrogen. Explosives like TNT, RDX, and Ammonium Nitrate. Both Nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerin are Nitrogen compounds.

The first Def was farmasuitical grade ureia. And was mainly used to fight fungus. If u work on semi trucks and spill it on concrete it crystallizes like a salt.which there are many different kinds of salts in soil.
