If you made it this far, then here's a not-so-fun fact:
Def Jam Icon 2 was in production, and by the look of it would have improved on this game substantially. Unfortunately, the studio was closed and the game was cancelled, so we never got to see how much better or worse it may have been. We need more Def Jam fighting games.

I can't stop thinking about this game. It's amazing how it was impossible to distinguish the Vendetta series from Def Jam the record label. The game never once claimed to be Vendetta 3, so I never once expected it to be Vendetta 3. I recognize that putting Def Jam on a game is the exact same as putting EA Sports BIG on a game. It's just the brand, not the series.

I think the problem people had with this game is that people went into Icon expecting another wrestling fighter like Vendetta and FFNY. It's not that bad of a game, and I appreciate your honesty it's why I love all of these videos you put out. Even if I'm not familiar with a game. Looking forward to what's next. 🙏

I didn't think I'd get nostalgia from looking at your gameplay but damn this brings back memories. I can defiantly see why me and brother didn't like this game that much, it's quite out there. Also I feel like everyone back in the day played a WWE game at some point, so transitioning that knowledge to Def Jam 1 & 2 is intuitive, however Icon is so unique it can put people off. I know you said it was easy to get into playing, but 12 year old me couldn't , so much so I honestly don't remember the right stick control scheme you talked about in the vid lmao. Great video as always lad. Cheers!

🍻 I think I would have been the same way. I've played a lot of games that 12-year-old me wouldn't have appreciated. I definitely wouldn't have had the attention for the rhythm portion or the tycoon stuff. Being an adult changes how a lot of these first-time experiences are for me

I actually really enjoy Icon. The slower paced gameplay does kind of help you think a bit more about what you have to do, alongside the versatility of options you can do once you grab someone. Not only that, but I think it holds a ton of merits for it's innovative ideas of making it similar to FNR3 with the wearing down and lack of HUD, but also different enough to be sort of a fun game with a lot of goofy stuff as a sidepiece like the Buildings with Bass mechanic. Not only that, but I absolutely love it's art direction and embracing of the Dirty South hip hop era. I recommend playing it as a game if you can separate it from the previous entries in the series, and more of it's--Take a look at it like NBA Live compared to NBA 2K, if you will.

Not gonna lie, I played the demo of this as a kid and I wasn't jazzed to hear that the AKIEngine wasn't going to be used, but I think your video sold me on at least giving the game a fair shake since it seems better than how I remembered it, especially considering they were attempting to try something more unique and risky. I can respect that at least.

To be fair, both this and Ride/Shred were made by ex-Midway folks. They... really had little luck with projects, didn't they? I remember seeing footage of this back in the day and finding it mindboggling, not to mention the weird camera. They literally had AKI, a legendary wrestling game studio, on dial and a proven track record that people loved... Cue EA flipping it into Fight Night. Believe this was also around the time they released FIFA Street 3, NBA Street Homecoming and SSX Blur. What a batch, fucking hell.
@RedBerylFTW

I've got some history for this. They actually couldn't get Aki Corp again in 2007. They were working on Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix and Sim City DS at the exact same time, while also going through the restructure that would change their name to syn Sophia. They also couldn't get the original EA Canada team because they were heading 17 different EA sports titles for that year. EA Chicago only ever got the opportunity to work on Fight Night Round 2, 3 and Def Jam Icon so their situation was heavy, having to live up to what EAC and Aki had already done.

2:06 - 2.17 One of my favourite video games is Tomb Raider 3 on PS1, which was developed by a new team at Core Design who got to passionately make a sequel that played the same but offered a different vibe. It's incredibly bastard hard, courtesy of sadistic retro British game design, but I loved the environments so much that I accepted it. Depending on how much you enjoy tank controls, you'll either love or hate the early Tomb Raider games. As for me, I love tank controls but only genuinely enjoyed 1 and 3.

@@RedBerylFTW well it's still weakest game regardless if the same series or not there's a reason why def jam icon 2 got cancelled cause of the poor reviews & the studio shutting down that game is what this game should have been to be honest
@RedBerylFTW
@RedBerylFTW 24 күн бұрын
@@tylerking9831 The reviews from media critics were constantly above average. The studio was shut down because EA Chicago over-hired a ton of people they didn't need. Def Jam stopped making fighting games altogether after the departure of Jay-Z, and they sold their contract to Konami to produce a karaoke game. 43 major outlets gave Icon above %60, and 19 outlets gave it above %80. I agree that Icon 2 was showing better ideas, but it's unrealistic to expect any studio to make a perfect game on the first try. I just appreciate what they did manage to accomplish.
