One of the most challenging talks at DEFCON is how to change your windshield wipers. Also, removing windshield wipers on a rainy morning is a terrible thing to do to a neighbor you actually hate.

Yeah, I know, this talk is about 9 years old by now.... But I think I can help you out with the name of the person who re-introduced a major flaw in the Cryptonite lock. His or her name is Junior Procurement Manager, typically with an BA in Marketing. I have worked as a product developer for major consumer brands (toys, household, medical) for 20+ years and the pattern is always the same: STEP 1: company/division comes under new management STEP 2: old = expensive guys are fired STEP 3: young = cheaper people are hired, preferably from a company where the new CEO had some half-important job or got fired for incompetence STEP 4: rookie manager has a "great" idea: "why don't we replace this precision-ground carbide pin with a piece of gum?" STEP 5: "great" idea gets implemented because the old guys aren't around any more STEP 6: "improved" product fails and retailers won't list it any more STEP 7: at the shareholder meeting CEO declares the failure as a success, as this "old" product was preventing the company "to move on" anyway...

Unfortunately, every time I have been in handcuffs, the cops have already taken my beer....

Due to the differences in carbonation (pressure), soda cans are thicker walled. The take away? If you find yourself locked in handcuffs, ask your captors for a soda instead of a beer.

This was one of my favorite Defcon talks this year! I cant wait for my kickstarter presents.

In practice, of course, bike thieves didn't generally use the self-impression attack against u-locks (at least, bit until this defect was fixed). The length of the bar extended past the U-bar was easily used as a base for a cheater bar (like a couple of feet of pipe, also helpful as a weapon in case someone tries to stop the thief) to simply break the two parts apart. This is a destructive attack, so it is outside the scope of the talk.

In safes with solenoids you can use strong earth magnets to activate the solenoid but use a sock on the magnet to protect the finish on the safe .

Hilariously, I realized I've been using overlifting in my mom's car for years, I just never knew the term. For whatever reason, the key she gave me doesn't work properly half of the time, but if I insert the key, then pull out REAL quick while turning, it beats the lock.

26:00 Back in high school everyone had the "Dudley" locks, and they were pretty decent.. I took them apart and figured this all out too. However, they also have a reverse combination.. usually you turn clockwise first, but you can do it going counterclockwise too, there's just an offset to the numbers (it was like +28 for the first number and -14 for the second or so) So between my friends and I we could exchange our locker combinations in plaintext because everyone would try the conventional way to unlock them :)

All this talk about how there's a a whole society behind picking locks and getting up to mischievous shenanigans, and I think of my front door. It's got one of those double turn locks that are "supposed" to be harder to get in.... But the whole door is glass. There's even rocks conveniently close by.. What the fuck is security?

@Schuylertowne I work in supply chain and manufacturing. To find the chinese lock person you could start with inventory records to find date of firat reciept. From there you should be able to identify the purchase order and who raised it. However it is unlikely this person was the actual decision maker. But will be able to provide dates. Just prior to the order being raised there will have been some sort of Lean, or continuous improvement program started. When these implementations are done poorly they are overseen by accounting. If you are really lucky you will find evidence that the company expected to save "x" cents per unit and therefore "y"0,000 dollars per annum. Hope this speess up your digging.

At 34:47 "accidentally reinvigorated" - what a concept! This notion can be generalized across many industries, and a common issue today seems to be that design and production cost decision-making is being handed to perhaps young MBAs or even engineering grads who have academic knowledge, but no background in the specific history of their company product. My favorite gripe is the modern pitcher that is certain to drip and run back down the side, because it was designed on a computer screen, and they never learned about adding the little overhang on the tip of the spout, that keeps liquid from adhering and flowing down the container side. Old factory apprenticeships, where one worked up from assembly or production lines into management, seeded essential awareness of nuances in aspects learned over years of trial-and-error. Smart a** folks who enter a company and are dropped into decision-making are the bane of modern corporations, jeopardizing solid real-world accumulated experience in favor of abstract virtual-world training. Kids used to play with everything, imparting tactile awareness and a deeper sense of materials and how things went together. The Kryptonite guy was most likely fired, we would presume - but ironically, if he and the company learned from this mistake, both might have been future-proofed in the Garp-buy-the-house-already-hit-by-crashed-airplane mode, "work hardened" as it were, so making them a lot more circumspect and less likely to fall for the same issue again. But that will make for a dandy story we are waiting for....

The best video on this subject I’ve ever seen. I have an old gun safe that someone gave me because they couldn’t open. I was able to get it open by adding and subtracting numbers from the original combination. Why did the safe fail like this and can I get it fixed back to the original operation? I would like to use it for my important papers like birth certificate and insurance papers. Thanks

Comment on vibratory lock opening: in junior high school I had a combination padlock for my locker. I found that if I ended the third number incorrectly, I could still open the lock by slamming it against the locker one or more times.

Attacking the cuffs using a paperclip slipped between the jaws as opposed to thin metal also works most of the time.

Let's see, the DIY NDE I'm most used to are: 1. Just walk in. 2. Just turn/push/pull door handle, open door, walk in. 3. Insert key, turn key, then turn/push/pull handle, open door, walk in. Easy-peasy!

Those little plastic things on the ends of your shoe laces. If you can get to one and pull it off, trim down on one end about an 1/8th inch with your fingernail and across all the way around except for another 1/8th inch or so across ( so basically you'll have a 1/8th to 1/16th (or 3/32nds inch, if you wamna get techy) square tab on the end of that plastic thing). Sligjtly bend it outwards. Theres your cuff key The tab on your jeans zipper works to. One of the parts that claws on to the zipper part. Bend the other back and out of the way.

Well, don't pick a lock you or someone else relies on... unless you really need to, and even then, it might still be OK after.

I'm bored of being a machinist, i'd like to retrain as a self employed Locksmith. BTW i think if you really need to keep something safe is a deep hole in a quiet place, Pirates and Robbers have been for hundreds of years and still are doing it this way. A Lock attracts attention, the bigger the Lock the bigger the attention.

Could someone explain the Master m175 bypass in greater detail? I have one purchased ~2016 and I am unable to defeat it by picking around above the number wheel. Perhaps they fixed it? Oh well, I can still decode it very easily.

You don't browse your personal filesystem in front of people, ever. You create a guest account with just the files you need.

Most passenger side locks don't have key holes these days.

For handcuffs, keep a pin or needle hidden on you. Use that as a shim on the ratchet.

I have a cheap 15 year old 60kg floor safe with key and combination 4 wheel lock combo which i've forgotten the combination. 2 questions, 1) do you think it's possible to open this with the sander method, 2) is the idea to simply hold the sander on the combination and move it around, or do you have to go through the method of once they are all in line, go 4 times clockwise, 3 times clockwise, 2 anti, one clockwise etc with the sander? i really dont want to take an angle grinder to it thanks

19:30 the attack he's using on those cuffs... unless you're a bad-ass and don't mind cutting your fingers while tearing a beer can up behind your back, or some kindly soul just left a bobby pin or some other thin bit of metal behind your back, you're screwed if your captor cuffs your hands behind your back, as we were taught in police academy. Note to self - before doing something likely to get me arrested, borrow bobby pin from wife and slide it over waistband of slacks, but underneath the belt, so I have that thin piece of metal to shove the ratchet down.

i figuered out the barrel bike lock, you just turn the numbers while pulling it apart, you can usually feel a click when each number is right. expensive barrel locks are designed not to give away the number like this

Sorry but lockpicking lawer and Bosnian bill could teach you a lot about bypassing locks. Also no one uses spiking as you have to drill. They just use a strong magnet 🧲 to move the solenoid.

Just tried the number-padlock thing (what was the name of that lock again?) and it worked (first lock i hacked! Woohoo!) But instead of the metal thingie from DVD boxes, i used my business card. Insane, how easy one can open "safe" containers... oO
