Defcon 5, Low Profile Bivi Shelter Part 1

Part 1 shows the Defcon 5 Biv Shelter being set up for my over nighter. It is low profile and similar to the Snugpak Stratosphere.(Stratosphere).

A bivy was the way to go years ago, to save weight. There are dozens of tents that weigh less than this bivy - 1.25 kilograms! There are bivy bags that weigh < 5 grams now. If stealth is a must, a bivy works for sure. But there are much better options, even for the brokies. But if the brokies skipped ordering coffee for a month, they could afford it!

Basel B Thanks! I'm hoping to use it again this weekend. I've got plenty of shelters/tents to choose from but it's always the Defcon that I take.

So it's like a cheaper Carinthia Observer bivi ? How good is the goretex like laminate? Does it have retaining hoops for an undermat like the Carinthia ? Love that Vegatato camo :) Thanks

I have seen more videos of this tent but I still have a question: can You fit a backpack +-60L in the tent when you are sleeping?

A Jonko Depends on what height you are. I am 1.8m and there is room at the foot end for my back pack.

Why wouldn't you want it over your face. That's why I love the USGI bivy, you throw your bag in and keep a low profile, and don't need a damn pop up tent that can cause you to be seen easier. That's why most bivys are off my list, I want low profiles, a military style bivy isn't supposed to be a tent, it's supposed to have a very low profile, that's why the US makes their that way. I camp in places and situations where I don't want to take the risk of being seen but I don't know if these are usable without the pop up part

I agree, but these have way less condesation issues, which is a big plus for most.

this seems like the perfect compromise. You get ventilation while keeping it compact and basically as low profile as a normal bivy

I just bought one of these. Left it outside for a couple of nights in the rain to test waterproofing. Huge puddles of water inside. Not waterproof in the least. Very disappointing.

That's weird. I've used it many times and was dry. Except when I let rain in while getting out.
