These types of episode is why I'm fan of your channel. Very open and candid. You created a huge buzz in the industry when you did your roof rack weight rating episode. So much so, other 4WD KZfaqrs did their own roof rack weight rating episodes. I'm sure it's the reason Rhino Rack has now improved their website and finding weight rating for their roof racks is so much easier. I wonder how much buzz this will generate this time? Well done Tyler.👍

we had a cop, come to the 4x4 club. to talk on 4x4 mods..i sold my 4x4. not worth having one. this country is fkt..4x4rs have car laws.3/4''tires, 2'' lift. car laws..absolutly bs..fkn nanny country. if they started up an accessory shop, dealers, like in u.s. the gov would make a sht load more money from tax. instead of 4k from you.. i own an f250 highboy, 1975. its 26'' to the sill,,std..factory..engineers are glorified fk wits..&, it should be illegal, banned, to raise any,ifs 4x4. they are not,4x4rs..new vehicles, hilux, ect, fail the moose test..swerve to you.. there aint no moose in aus..it was adopted here..if its illegal to fit 3-5'' lifts on your vehicle, without an engineer fkng your ass for 4k.. they shouldnt be sold..period.. 1 thing you missed,,was the diff ratio..it has to be changed with bigger wheels..tell the fk wit that..or low range will kill you, being faster down hill..plus , worse in an auto,,there death traps std..

A very interesting episode to see what you have to go through in AUS. Here in the UK we have nothing like this. Any lift, any tyre size is ok and the first thing most people do is take off the anti roll (sway) bars and throw them out! As long as the tyres are within the arches or flares and the headlights are adjusted down to not dazzle you are fine.

It's fascinating what you have to go through to modify a vehicle in Australia, come to Oregon USA it's a lot different - My rock crawling rig here in Oregon runs 37" tires, no sway bars, and some fun suspension adding up to a 5" lift, not to mention the lack of tire coverage, doors, or roof - and my neighbor state patrolman has said numerous times that there's nothing that would stop me driving down the public roads, here except for maybe mud flaps. It's noisy and you don't want to swerve too hard, sometimes I think it might be better we have a little stricter rules... sometimes not.

I got pulled over coming through Richmond (Lithgow to Sydney) I was told that my 4wd was illegal, but when I questioned him, the police officer couldn't give me a straight answer. I have a 2 inch lift with 285/75r16 (32.8 inch) tyres on it. he then walked around my 4wd, in the end he let me go but pretty much told me not to go through Windsor/Richmomnd area as I might be so lucky next time.

Well done mate , you have a lot of patience- it is great that you used quality Aussie components. Great lesson too all, I had too do the same with my Patrol in nsw , I was fortunate that all my lift kit / brake upgrade/ engine performance upgrades/ lights and light bars/ fuel tanks / water tank / air system / upgraded tyres/ battery bank / twin alternators ect all passed and I have the engineer certification for all, but I still get stopped every now and then but once I show the paperwork all is good. My insurance company is also happy , just a quick note I did increase my GVM TO 3.5 tonnes which allowed me to have stronger drive components which in turn gives me both great on road comfort but great of road capabilities with limited fuss.

Awesome video with so much content in ensuring your car is roadworthy. Other off-roaders need to follow your lead and have their vehicles engineered and compliant after mods. Seen so many young guys with totally illegal rigs on the road that could potentially lead to harm or worse. Love the GVM being just so damn close - we are right on our GVM 3350 with 130lt fuel and 2 people so now the dilemma is Lovells 4.2 or DMW 4995 and a wad of cash 💰 🤓 Thanks for another great educational video TT

Congrats Tyler on the certification! 🤙. I’m sure that’s a very big deal and a huge weight off your chest, both for legal and safety reasons…. It makes me realize and feel a lot more on how much leniency but also on how much more risky, as far as safety is concerned, things are here in the US. We have NONE of those requirements. Except emissions, and possibly GVM but unless you’re in an accident and insurance has to get involved is when “potentially” it could come into play. Everything else is an easy pass here. I come from a mechanical engineering background so doing things correctly and in spec for my families and others sake is extremely important to me, so it was nice to see all the things that are necessary to have a properly engineered vehicle and what is expected after upgrading and adding mods. And it was also nice to see I have most of those things done. 💪. I would very much like to have a brake test performed even though I upgraded mine. I took plenty of notes. Thanks for this brother… 🙏 Good to see Australia is taking care of their people, even though it may be a bit of a hassle. ❤️🇦🇺 Curious, does your front sway bars need to be installed for it to pass too?

Being my 2015 gu patrol is still in excellent condition, and used as a family vehicle, I only plan on fitting a efs 2inch lift and running a true 33inch tyres, so after speaking to our engineering guys here in tassie I'm still 100% legal without having to get mod plated. Plus also having very young children I don't want mine to heigh trying to get the kids in and out of it. But even while my gu is stock suspension it's still rather capable off road. Love the fact It has all live axles front and rear and a rear diff locker. And it's all manual transmission. Good thing they are holding their value very well atm. Mine is still around 62k fully insured with less than 49k on the clock. Also cheers for the no bs channel not like another major channel out their that sugar coats every mod under the sun.

Wow. I watched this video because I had no idea what “defected” even meant. As an American viewer, seeing what you have to go through to modify a vehicle in Australia seems outrageous. I guess you’re used to it there, but we don’t have anything like that here (except maybe in Commi-fornia) and if they tried to enact it, people in the off-road community would go absolutely off the rails in rebellion. I feel sorry for you guys over there that want to live the off-road life. It looks hard and very expensive. I certainly makes me appreciate the freedom we have in the U.S. Love your channel though. I appreciate your honesty, openness and in depth info, behind the scenes stuff and it’s interesting to see what it’s like there compared to here. Cheers mate!

Still need engineering for 37s or 40s on the light trucks like Isuzu and Canters

@@nathan100tz correct unless it’s done under SSM, but the engineering isn’t as in depth compared to light vehicles, no swerve testing etc, just braking. And the two companies that sell the rims for the super single upgrades do all the engineering or SSM as part of the package

This has been a great video mate. Clears up alot of debate and tbh all those tests are things any vehicle should be able to do. Nothing over the top and end of the date you have a good handling, highly modified rig to be proud of. I did hear years ago you can’t change any of the specs on the mod plate, for example can’t run 33s if it says 35s as was all tested in a set circumstances. Be interested to know

in iceland you can go 54 inch. but fenders must cover tires and car must get inspected. probably even larger than 54 if you find sutable road legal tires that make sense for snow driving.

Great vid I’m in the process of taking out my cheap hilux 4inch ifs lift, going 2inch suspension 1 inch body lift as I’ve had issues with caster/camber an knocking out the alignment all together .Im sure there’s lift kits that can fix this.but it’s money better spent getting out on weekends than going through the engineering process.

Awesome video mate, cheers! If your 4WD is engineered, can you add another 2' life and 7% bigger tyres? hehehe

Thank you for sharing this story! My "Highlux" (nick name) is fitted with the Superior Engineering 4" lift kit. (Already fitted when I bought it.) This kit doesn't change any of the suspension angles etc from standard but does change the chassis height. This increases the approach, ramp over and departure angles only. Attached to the firewall is a QLD modification plate with a code number. The vehicle was sold to me as engineered (by the plate) but it turns out that the plate is for the long range tank not the suspension lift! I have had no issues with registering it over the last 3 years as it sits but I'm not sure if it is intact engineered properly. There is nothing noted on my registration papers in regards to modification. Having watched your great video, I'm now going to check with the RMS as to where I stand! Keep the great videos coming!

A Qld mod plate is only relevant to Qld rego so if you engineer a car in another state and then transfer rego it means jack all

In order for it to have been re-registered in NSW, would it have not passed without the relevant engineering required? This is why I'm going to check if its been done or not. To much confusion!

Mate, your certainly not the only one to drive without and engineering cert! There are a lot of very dangerous looking 4x4s on the road!

Great episode mate with insight into the pit falls of modifying your 4 Wheel Drive, thanks for that. I sure there will be many thinking about whether their vehicle comes up to scratch now after watching that. Do you have to keep the original certification in the vehicle or would a copy suffice if pulled over for an inspection ?.

What a great video….will be very helpful for a lot of people for a long time. Does you Navara require any engineering or is it within the limits you mention?

The engineering cost for everything involved with the certificate, paperwork, inspections and the testing side of things. I find it to be quite fair. It’s expensive yes, but not unreasonable. Not anymore expensive than basic suspension.

Great info Tyler very informative. Does anyone think that if the the tracks we love so much were maintained better we wouldn't need all these mods in the first place? Or is it the challenge we're after?

Nice to live in a reasonable estate.. Victoria is a nightmare and you can't engineer larger tyres and lift here.
