Louis Tomlinson is one of the most underrated song writers in my opinion every song he writes is completely open and honest.

He said the song was a “call for help” of some sorts. He was really vulnerable while writing it

We (his fans) may not be the biggest crowd in the world but we love to show Louis that we are here for him just as he has been there for a lot of fans. And we know he never got the promo we think the album deserved so his fans started a project with this song just a couple of days ago and suddenly it climbed itunes charts all over the world. And it's not a single. Just an album track. While the song obviously meant a lot to him, to be so open on it, he was surprised by fans instant love for the song after the first time he performed it live and that was before he had released the album. So yes, it's a fan favorite no matter how you interpret it. Needless to say perhaps but Louis was really taken aback and amazed by it all. Thank you for reacting to this song and for your review and thoughts on it. As always I feel you're spot on.

yeah you're right, it's about having relationship problems and the other person being proud and trying to hide or protect themselves from the pain it may cause them, communication problems and stuff while he says he is completely vulnerable and just wants to be loved by them no matter what, work on their problems and deal with them but the other person is creating a wall in their defense to protect both of them, he on the album is completely honest and counts all the highs and lows, you will have to listen to the whole album to understand more, I really liked your reaction, this is one of my favorite songs on the album and I would love for the next one to be only the brave! :) x

Louis has different people for harmonies I'm so proud of this song for getting number #1, we did so great. We are such a dedicated fandom. Also I'm such a huge fan of this song live more then audio. It sounds so better in my opinion. What you said was spot on though, he's too tired to act tough and so he's breaking down his walls and wants the same in return. this song was a cry for help. I think the backing vocals are his guitarists.... ^_^ Louis described DEFENCELESS as a bit of a cry for help, likening it to being in an argument or feeling vulnerable. Lyrically, he said it's always been important for him to be honest & vulnerable at times.

I like it, honest, from the heart song, I didn't really listen to much of the groups music but I love his voice and telling of a story. That's some talent as a songwriter,

i agree, it seems like the other person is not reciprocating and there seems to have been communication issues in the relationship. louis described this song as a cry for help, and this is reflected especially in the opening line of the song, "i come running to you like a moth into a flame." moths are attracted to light and flames and lightbulbs but they die once they crash into them. you can tell that he was in a very toxic relationship and it was hard for him to finally leave that person behind (wish i didn't need so much of you - he knew that person was bad for him). but then the song that comes right after defenceless on the album ends the album with "it's a solo song and it's only for the brave" meaning he finally had the courage to leave and be on his own.
