A glint of steel, on the horizon. Tis' the raised blade of Sir John Doe, defender of the basic, here to proclaim: ANCHORMAN IS ACTUALLY VERY FUNNY.
Hardly Working: What really goes on in CollegeHumor offices may surprise you, unless you're already familiar with unprofessional, inappropriate slackoffs getting nothing done.

True, but if you stop and take a look at who is chiefly hating on "basic" female interests, it's mostly other women. No joke, I am citing this skit in my final essay in my Music History Class. I'm using it to draw a parallel between the great divide of modernism versus mainstream during the 20th century and the contemporary basic versus hipster cultural debate. They are basically the same arguments, and my essay basically takes the position of Brennan's character in this skit. You can like what you like. If listening to 4 and a half minutes of white noise is what you want to consider the pinnacle of art, more power to you. But when you look down on other people for wanting something a little more accessible, you prove yourself a hypocrite and an elitist. Am I taking this skit way too seriously? absolutely. But there are genuinely some beautiful bits of rhetoric in this that I think would be plagiarism not to disclose where I found it.

You’re right about not judging individuals for their taste, but there is a strong argument there has been a massive increase in the homogeneity of music since the US government lifted the limits on how many stations a company could own back in the 90s and Clearchannel went on a buying spree. So there is an underlying problem in a decline in music diversity, but it’s not due to peoples tastes being basic or anything like that

@@LittleRedWhine I disagree, there is a moment in the song where the subject is given more depth, but the vast majority of the song is making fun of a woman for being basic. "Some random quote from Lord of the Rings, incorrectly attributed to Martin Luther King"- that's straight up just implying the woman is stupid. This is coupled with the video in which Bo Burnam holds a cup with 'Beyoncé is my spirit animal' on it, and wears culturally appropriative feathers- she is the target of the joke. We are meant to think that she's dumb, "incredibly derivative". It's nothing more than a white man making fun of a white woman, and hoping the "white" part disguises his misogyny.

They actually touch on one of the most important notion of sociology when they say that hipsters or people who are not “basic” have personalities that also are just reactionary manifestation of interaction or perception of their world views. yup and even rejecting doesn't make the individual any more unique or less "basic", reactionary subcultures often romanticize their own rebellion without realizing 1. as you said, their ideologies are formed in response therefor completely reliant on others and 2. individuals belonging to these groups typically just regurgitate the pre established points of view, making them just as sheepy as main streamers, even those professing individual identity still form their choices and views on a number of preset identity paths

@@rz1974 "regurgitate the pre established points of view," True for most hipsters, but in my case I never really found a "group" I felt comfortable with, not even on the internet. So I've spent my whole life trying to evaluate things on their individual merits, which of course makes my tastes a mixture of basic/hipster/super-weird, thus alienating me from all social groups. I don't know if that means I'm successfully following the middle path of the examined life, or if I'm just a gold-medalist at mental gymnastics trying to lay claim to the title of Ultimate Snowflake. But its not like I want to be different, its just really hard to find people that share my worldview.

“As are sunsets and rainbows you VIPER” sold me completely. I truly was a fraud. I liked feeling unique and smart, but in the end my choices were still defined by other people, so what difference did it really make? Turns out, none. Now I just like what I like and if my opinions line up with the majority or not, I don’t care. It’s silly how freeing it was.

Honestly this changed my entire perspective on "basic" people. While no video can magically make me like Taylor Swift, this made me a bit more comfortable with the fact that autumn colors are fuckin relaxing and the vanilla colors of lights, and scents of candles, are amazing.

Definitely right about the Christmas lights. Though I don't have any in my room anymore. I love the bit about the MCU. Especially the line about sunsets and rainbows. I wouldn't say pizza is my favorite food, but I certainly do enjoy pizza and tacos as reliable go-tos. I love dark chocolate, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with preferring milk chocolate. I will almost never turn down the opportunity to belt out Don't Stop Believin with a group of like-minded individuals. I love doggystyle. Pumpkin spice lattes are delicious and vanilla bean candles smell delightful, but you're not going to catch me with either of them because it's just not my style. Also, the sexy cat costume is extremely overdone and I will laugh at it every year with my friends until the end of time, but a really good one will also catch my eye for sure. Also, I would be lying if I said I didn't always automatically cringe at the phrase, "live, laugh, love". That doesn't mean I'm better than people who do those things or use those things. We all have our flaws. These are just my opinions on the specific "basic" things. Also though, I just want to point out that this man is literally an Internet White Knight right now and I find that hilarious.
