Phoenix the Idea VS Phoenix the Man

Totally agree! One thing I really like is how Phoenix feels more mature in the Apollo trilogy. It makes me feel like a proud parent in a very weird sense lol. (Still need to refresh my memory on AA4 though.)

''Comically vague for no valid reason'' Hobo Phoenix is vague precisely because he is plotting Kristoph's downfall - he's probably that way because if he chose not to confide in his long-time friends like Maya and Edgeworth, you think he's gonna spill the beans to some random attorney kid he's known for only a couple of months? Needless to say it is unsurprising that he is 'rude' because he unjustly lost his job and his passion for life for 7 whole years, not to mention the stresses that come along with being a single parent and raising a child. My point being it doesn't surprise me that's he's become jaded and disillusioned in AA-AJ.

Plotting his downfall, except he actively keeps a vital partner he needs in the dark even though it’s a certainty he’s to be trusted. I’m calling him stupid for this. We don’t even know if he didn’t confide in maya or edgeworth btw lol, that’s like a popular fan theory

@@Athenalikespizza I think he did confide in Edgeworth, since they've worked together abroad, Edgeworth became also obsessed with taking down corruption in the legal system and he pushed in his favor in DD, but that's also an interpretation.

As someone who is neutral-to-negative on Beanix and neutral-to-positive on Bossnix (nickname for AA5-6 Phoenix), this was pretty vindicating! Even as someone who somewhat accepts Beanix, I don't think Bossnix characterization is an inconsistency? Of course Phoenix was going to act different when going through the worst time of his life. The guy's depressed, missing his purpose, and probably ashamed to some extent of the underhanded tactics he's using. Why do people want him to go back to that? He LIKES lawyering and is gonna be peppier and nicer when he's able to do it legitimately again. People are too attached to the edgy alcoholic poker playing persona. It reminds me of the fascination with Sans, except Sans was a much more compelling character IMO. I do still think he shouldn't have been the playable character in Turnabout Countdown, though. I agree that him stepping in to help Athena makes sense for the characterization, and the cutscene of him entering the courtroom is pure hype. I just wish he took the spot as co-counsel instead, personally. Chronologically the case is Athena's second, so it could be good character building to have her self-conscious and upset at herself at first, "I'm sorry boss, I really thought I could take a case on my own now but I'm still falling short!" and Phoenix could reassure her that there's nothing weak about needing a little support, maybe even a callback like "On my second case I needed my mentor to tell me to flip over a receipt, this is normal". I also really loved the civil trial. Perhaps retreading old ground, but it was really interesting to see a Farewell My Turnabout scenario from the other perspective. Paul Atishon wasn't running for president, it was more like a mayor position. His character is very much based in Japanese politics, where politicians have vans and give public speeches on the street, and there is a big culture of courruption, nepotism and living up to family expectations as well, hence the elements of blackmail and him wanting to follow in his grandfather's footsteps despite not being qualified. His breakdown even parodies the victory ceremonies politicians have when elected, hence the drum-banging and shouts of "KANPAI!" Thematically, political corruption sowing a wedge between Apollo and Phoenix really fits, since that was essentially what originally broke the pedestal Apollo used to put him on. Unlike in AJ, Phoenix has actual reason to conceal the factors driving him, and Apollo does get clued in and get to solve the problem, strengthening his bond with Phoenix and their respect for each other. With that tension resolved, when they fight side by side in the K'hurain trial it really feels earned.

Phoenix in 5 and 6 is literally Phoenix post 3 ending. Where he already can manage his cases on his own without help from Mia Fey, and during the events of 4, his calm and collected vibes he gave was just his bluff in action that we saw him use in the trilogy. The diference being that we dont know if he is actually bluffing since we dont play as him (with exception of his part in the final case)

Compare 2-4 with 6-5 (the first half), and I think you’ll find just why so many people disagree on “Phoenix in 5 and 6 is literally Phoenix post 3 ending”. In 2-4, Maya is kidnapped by an assassin, and nothing short of a not guilty verdict will have her released. Nevertheless, Phoenix takes his time, exploring all possibilities, and ultimately sides with justice served, rather than the easy route, thus putting Maya in greater danger, really, for the sake of justice. In 6-5, Maya’s kidnapped again, this time by a Justice Minister (so already the stakes are lower), and this is enough for Phoenix to serve as a lawyer for a man in Kurain Village, of all things. I think that should be self-explanatory. Halfway through the original trilogy, Phoenix has to wrestle with his priorities, with Maya’s life on the line. At the very end of the sequel trilogy, Phoenix serves as a lawyer for a character literally none of his constituents would have heard out, all because Maya’s been kidnapped again. I feel like even 3-2 Phoenix would’ve exhausted all other options before stooping that low.

There are two camps: Those who liked the direction Phoenix was going in Apollo Justice and those who didn't. While we may fight till the ends of time over this, I hope we can agree that the disconnect within the games after the original trilogy is very annoying to the overall continuity of the series going forward.

Honestly, my biggest complaint against 5 + 6 Phoenix is just how ugly he is (especially in 5). I don’t really “get” the “front ahoge” thing he has going on, and I feel like the original sprites worked well in 2D in a way that forces a whole new design in order to complete the jump to 3D, and I feel like they just really dropped the ball on Wright. Something about the proportions of his face just really, really don’t work for me.

This video is completely lacking a decent argument. In fact, you're not making an argument at all. You're basically telling people their arguments are invalid by looking at the surface of their arguments. All right, I've been a writer for over 20 years and have been writing for an Ace Attorney fan game for over a year, thus forcing me to delve deeply into his character. Here's what I found: DD/SoJ Phoenix isn't just a flanderization of trilogy Phoenix. He's an outright _character assassination_ . Even Beanix, while a weird direction to take his character, makes sense. Since your understanding of the arguments surrounding this seem to be sur face level, allow me to clarify what you're missing when people complain about Phoenix being a flanderization. No one is arguing that Phoenix can't be "shocked." He's shocked plenty of times in the trilogy. Is this really what you think the argument entails? That he's shocked more? Come on, you're better than this. Modern Phoenix is a flanderization because he takes the basic concepts anyone could find from a glance at his wiki page and doesn't have any of the small details and nuances that made trilogy Phoenix so likable. Now I could go into great detail as to why this is the case, but I'm not going to make this comment longer than it needs to be. I'm going to sum it up in Modern Phoenix's major trait that exists to prove the writers have absolutely no idea who he actually is in the first place: the emphasis on bluffing. Trilogy Phoenix bluffed. This isn't debatable, he bluffed quite frequently. But he knew he was onto something. That's who Phoenix is. He follows his gut and when he has to feign confidence, he's willing to do so. But the reason Phoenix is willing to bluff is the true character. Phoenix is patient. He's willing to as long as he needs to in order for someone to trip up. His bluffs aren't his signature move, they're a tool to keep the trial going so he can slowly chip away at the truth. DD/SoJ's case structure is fundamentally different from the trilogy's and AJAA. They largely consist of the lawyers having to make up a scenario around a piece of evidence and the prosecution has to find a way to poke holes in that scenario. This goes on until the truth is found. This leads to some really wild theories ("you're a goner" being "Hugh O'Conner, for example). Regardless, this plays into Phoenix's one-note characterization of bluffing and stumbling his way to victory. Takumi's case structure is the reverse in a lot of ways. Bluffing was reserved for when Phoenix needed more time to figure things out. The prosecutor takes the role of presenting each scenario that proves the defendant guilty and Phoenix responds with the resulting contradictions. The truth slowly becomes clear and Phoenix bides his time until he finally gets that "aha" moment or can get the witnesses to incriminate themselves. This leads to a far more focused Phoenix who is less likely to fly off the handle (except when it pertains to Maya). It's all about taking time. Chipping away at the evidence and the truth little by little until the truth is revealed. 5-5 is a case that exemplifies what's wrong with modern Phoenix. Not only does he display shockingly little concern when his own daughter is held hostage (a situation that caused him to completely break down in 2-4), he also comes across as desperate. Not desperate to get to the truth or bide his time but desperate for his client not to be guilty. This weak ass desperation causes him to literally whine about how Edgeworth is coming up with ways to disprove his theories (which is is his JOB), shriek "that can't be TRUUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEE" when the evidence is starting to be stacked against Athena, bellow "Fuuuuuudge!" in the middle of court when he realizes that he doesn't have evidence, and act like an unhinged maniac in his desperation for Athena not to be guilty. What's more, the game rewards him for this. His arguments start to sound less like they're following the evidence and more like he's pulling anything and everything out of his ass to maybe prove it with no rhyme or reason. Trilogy Phoenix had a tendency to get stuck on a specific detail and expand his case little by little through each detail he focused on. Now, SoJ Phoenix tones down this exceptionally irritating quality, and I'm grateful for that. But it introduces another problem with the writing: his treatment of his loved ones. Trilogy Phoenix has proven himself to go above and beyond for the people he loves. Sure, he teases them plenty of times, but no one is more devoted to them as he is and his lighthearted teasing never crosses a line. SoJ Phoenix is... an asshole. He is an absolute asshole to Maya, treating her like a womanchild incapable of growing up and taking on more responsibility. When treated to evidence of her extreme emotional maturity (something he's been fully aware of since 3-5 when Edgeworth pointed it out to him), he consistently invalidates it, going so far as to tell Maya that despite her years of training and obvious character growth that is still exactly the same childish Maya as before. In public. In front of the fucking royal family. And this moment right there shows that the writers don't understand Phoenix. At all. Everything he does for Maya is what he would do _on paper_ , but the game relies on nostalgia for the player to even know Phoenix and Maya actually like each other in the first place. He's constantly irritated with her and condescending toward her. I'm going to end this here, as this is a long comment, but trust me when I say, this is the _surface_ of why DD/SoJ Phoenix is a character assassination. This video takes a surface level approach to what Phoenix does and excuses it because... it didn't bother you and it's something he would plausibly do on paper while entirely disregarding how he's written and whether that's in-line with Phoenix at his core. That's the crux of your argument: "I like him so he's not bad and you're the stupid one for not liking him." Fine. Like him, no one's stopping you. But if you think everyone just wants to bash on Phoenix for no reason and comes up with dumb excuses to do so, you're basically proving that you're not able to see past your own bias.

I do not have time to go through this entire comment but I will say I only added stuff in this video that people have talked to me personally about for years, I in no way looked at the surface of it, anything I said in this video is a response to discussions I’ve had in the past And I did not say “I like him so he’s good and you’re wrong for not liking him”, I called one complaint stupid I’ll admit but I didn’t say you can’t dislike him.

@@Athenalikespizza I admit that the "he uses his shocked animation more" argument is stupid. It doesn't even make sense. I'm not fond of said animation myself, I think it looks rather uncanny valley in 3D, but I don't think that alone is a flanderization. My comment is just an argument that there is a fundamental difference between trilogy Phoenix and modern Phoenix in terms of how he's written in ways that can't be explained by character growth. I probably jumped the gun a bit and I apologize. I really don't have a problem with you liking him, I just think you dismissed the arguments you listed without really understanding them, unless you were just talking to people who didn't really understand why they didn't like modern Phoenix. For the record, I agree with your assessment that SoJ was very much Apollo's game. But I also share the frustration that Athena was pushed aside for Phoenix and that's a complaint that has merit, particularly since SoJ treated her like an afterthought.
