Yes, I realize that now. I figured this out over a year ago. A learning process, but I have the Eagles "46" Defensive book written by Ron Vanderlinden. I am well aware of why it's called that now. But thanks for reminding me.

I use this against 4 wide I love it I can get a ton of pressure on players on Madden I use more linebackers than D lien on the edge

@keontez Thank you for that info on Plank, I did not know that. Although, there is no evidence that this is still considered a 46 defense. The SS and nickel is covering the slots, while there is 1 LB. The 46 is designed for blitz crazy action with LBs that can cover downfield like the NY Jets do every game. The TNT lineup in the front with 2 ends included is nothing like the 46 defense.

This is the 3-4 or 3-3-5 variety that Rex ran and not Buddy, but it’s still the 46 Bear. I’ve been running this since the late 90’s after running the basic and invert 3-4 to adapt to the early Air Raid and RNS teams. One year we averaged 7.6 pts per game for the season and never gave up more than 20 that year and have held teams under 20 PPG every season that I’ve ever ran so it obviously works. As Buddy once said - “it’s the only defense that works both on the chalkboard and on the field.”

We also ran something similar to buddies 46 , my mentor coach is a genius. There were 3 seasons where we had five shut outs. I love the adjustments to the more wide open schemes?? The defense is not just a defense that is strong against the pass but is strong against the run also. For my money the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. Btw, whenever I watch people give their partake on the 46 I can’t help but think of those Bear teams of the eighties about the corners who rarely get talked about, they however played a vital role in the 46 in that they were in man to man 99 percent of the time. But if you like pressure and punishing the qb and the passing game as well as disrupting and altering the running game then this defense and the variations , is as nasty as it gets! But like Buddy said will send as many as necessary but we will not sit Barack and get picked apart.

Only thing I disagree with is your SS bump alignment with the TE when the offense goes to a 3WR set. The SS would back off and the Mike would slide over head up over guard.

Two questions...first, using the 46, what front are you using? It looks like 5-1-5, but are your defensive ends actually defensive ends or linebackers playing on the ends? And second, in the free safety zone blitz scheme, would it be possible to have that SS on the TE show blitz, and drop into man on the TE? I would think this would keep him available for stopping the possible swing route on the RB, as well as providing run support if a sprint draw were to come his way, forcing the play out.

Hey, thanks for the great video! I have a question if you have the chance. Why at 5:49 are you sending the Tackles through the C gaps instead of the B gaps like in other situations (like 2:38)?

its 46 as in Forty-six not 4-6, its was named after Doug Plank's jersey number. Come on, guys...

1:39 -This looks more like a dime out of a 5-5 Cover 1 Man scheme defense than a 4-6. Why wouldn't you have 2 LB instead of 5 lineman. This is not a 4-6 made famous by the 1985 Chicago Bears with 4 lineman, 3 LB, with a Safety dropping down with CB out wide and 1 safety running free.

They ran more 12 personnel back in the 80s so it looks different

I think the alingment is wrong, the 46 defense is basically the 4-3 with the safety is up towards the line.

Incorrect. Because in a 4-3 defense those inside defensive tackles wouldn't be right on those inside blockers AKA your Center and two offensive guards. They would be on the outside shoulders. In a 46 defense they are right on those 3 blockers. That's how you can tell that it's a 46 Bear Front

No you wouldn't. I would have your offense dismantled. Broken down. My blitzes are relentless. I am the MASTER of mixing coverages Your QB would be battered and bruised
