Lots of requests for videos on Defense so we are doing a series. This is our first video in our defense series and we show you how to use the markings on the ice to play better defense.
In this video we teach how to use the dots, hashmarks, blue line, and top of the circles to play better defense, and better understand your duties out there on the ice.

Part of being a defenseman is anticipating the attacker's movement. You may not be able to match the player's speed in all cases and therefore your decision on the amount of gap can vary, so pay close attention to the player's movement patterns and shot ability. This will help you assess the appropriate amount of gap and aggressivity to apply when crossing into your zone.

One thing is when using the nets don't screen the goalie.

Exactly. I've seen times where a team scores where the goalie's own teammate is screening them. So you can't take their space away.

@@Mario-uo2zu That makes sense because you want your goalie to get into position as they can see the shot while their defender takes any kind of pass away (i.e. backdoor/tap in).

Hey Nicke. We have a video for playing the man in the corner. It will be posted in a few weeks. We also have kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hd2Zdqh1l5mueKc.html that covers what NOT to do in a 1 on 1.

If I don't know the quickness/speed of a player I will tend to sit a little farther away and to the inside of him...this makes sure I have two things covered. 1, that I won't have him cut into the slot for a nice shot, and 2, won't get beat around the outside. But ultimately if you don't have decent skating ability, you will get beaten every time by a skilled skater no matter what you do.

Stay inside the face off dots, force him to the corner, force him to his back hand, whatch for the pass, take his stick away, then take the puck. Clear it.

Some simple things that have helped me at lower levels. Always turn to the middle not to the outside of the ice. Just by being in the middle? Makes the goalie's job so much easier as it pertains to angles. Try to take away their forehand shots and passes where practical.

Don’t go down the middle, start to cut in from the boards once you reach about the blue line, if you catch the defender looking at the puck, even for a second, exploit that, a simple chip and chase usually works if the defender isn’t on the boards. In the corner, try to move behind the net by using your body, maneuverability, small size, whatever. Once you’re behind the net, hopefully the defender has chased you, and you can easily pass it to someone in the slot, or wrap around

@Aalmost
@Aalmost 9 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I may look like a troll but honestly gear doesn't matter NEARLY as much as most players make it sound. Cheap gear is as good as good gear with the exception of gloves, stick and sometimes but rarely skates. Make sure you get a good stick with comfy gloves and skates! All the advice I have.. good luck buying!

Can we get a video of you playing a game, but just focused on you instead of the puck so we can see what to do. I live in Jacksonville Florida so its almost impossible for me to go somewhere to watch good hockey players play, and on TV, the second the puck leaves the players stick the camera pans away from them so I can't see what they're doing when hey don't have possession

@CoachJeremy
@CoachJeremy 9 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. In the bit about using the goal post I'm showing a bit of an extreme example, you normally wouldn't back up that much into the goal post. Your ideal alignment is body on body, stick on puck. This lets the goalie see the puck, while still having an obstacle in the shooting lane. You can use the other net to help with you body position and alignment

As a goalie, I don't want a defensemen directly in front of me on those hard angle shots. When you were more towards the center of the ice is ideal for me and probably most goalies. You are in a better position to cut off cross ice passes.
