NGL i think that does have to do with the casting as well, no one can disagree that season 8 to 11 had Multiple filler queens, queens which they knew would get packing early and didn't expect us to be attached to them. It also didn't help that it was clearly the most rushed season... like, rushed to the point that they couldn't wait to get Ru's makeup artist on set before they shot everything. So WDW owns drag culture? RPDR wasn't high art in the first season, either. Give it time.
@ladyreverie7027
@ladyreverie7027 2 жыл бұрын
But it also seemed like it was designed by a bunch of Americans who had no idea what Australian culture actually is. Like Ru seemed to have an idea in his mind for what Australian references were iconic and yet they are references that no actual Aussie can relate to but which Americans would probably go "lol Australians". And then things I thought for sure would be on there weren't. For example I expected Snatch Game to be entirely characters associated with Australia and New Zealand, where was anyone from Kath & Kim, Priscilla, Julia Gillard, anyone from LOTR etc? Instead most characters were actually from America or Britain and the Australian characters were either poorly done (Bindi Irwin) or downright insulting and hurtful to the person being portrayed (Lindy Chamberlain). I wish that Drag Race Down Under had been completely under the control of Australians and New Zealanders just like Drag Race Thailand was under the control of Thai producers and directors. That would have meant our culture and drag was properly represented instead of a caricature of what Americans think "Down Under" is like. You know what's way better than DRDU? House of Drag. It's actually run by Kita Mean and Anita Wiglet and it's a New Zealand drag show. And Elektra actually did super well on that drag show as well.

If I have to choose a queen to represent each era: Era 1: Obviously, the first ever winner. Era 2: Shangela was the biggest name at the time and her has that signature early season humor/mannerisms. Era 3: Alyssa Edwards represents everything that make that era the golden era. Drama, clear storyline, outstanding preforming skills and strong branding. Era 4: Katya literally broke the internet during that time. Era 5: Eureka's run is a very good example of how the narrative of the show changed during that time. Also she kinda introduced an archetype that was very prominent during this era. And an honorary mention to Miss Vanjie of course. Era 6: I don't know yet exactly, but Bimini comes to mind. An international queen, who has a almost mainstream following, two strong factors of the current drag race time.

My biggest gripe with them trying to recreate “the season 9 magic” (don’t get it twisted I love that season) is that every twist, every gag, everything that happened made sense- like the lip sync for the crown for example- I truly believe any one of those 4 queens deserved & could’ve won- so a lip sync battle made sense against those 4 and the outcome either way would’ve made sense and been iconic, even if a different queen besides Sasha won (again- don’t get it twisted- I’m very happy Sasha won and she fought super hard for the well deserved crown- but the other girls fought just as hard too) but with the other seasons that came after- it wasn’t the same energy, not saying that s10-s13 girls didn’t work for it or deserve it- but it was clear in those seasons there was a front runner(s) and not everyone in the final was going to win- or even felt like they had a chance (that could be due to editing but still, all of this is just my opinion)
@sparo_splat
@sparo_splat 2 жыл бұрын
Also there's a requirement to have a reveal during finale lipsyncs (because producers want another Sasha moment to happen), so as queens try hard to meet the high standard that Sasha set, some focus too much on the reveal itself instead of actually lipsyncing (e.g. Asia), but Sasha is a great lipsyncer not because of her reveals but because of how she performs, so most queens, especially those who aren't strong lipsyncers in the first place, really fall flat.
@katrinaisley6088
@katrinaisley6088 2 жыл бұрын
@@sparo_splat couldn’t agree more with this! I also think that there are times where they focus too much on doing some new crazy never seen before reveal (again- like Asia) instead of just timing things right- like peppermint had some AMAZING reveals because of timing and performance, not because of how “revolutiony” the move was- but how/when she did them made it 100 times better and more effective
@heyitsmira17
@heyitsmira17 2 жыл бұрын
@@sparo_splat afaik they also asked for S9 queens to do reveals, no? I feel like I read that somewhere, could be wrong. But imo, the problem is that not only the show, but also the queens did not understand that the whole petal stunt wasn't the reason why Sasha won - she won because of the overall performance, the petals and emotion she delivered matched the song, and she was ready with a scissor to cut her wig if Stronger was chosen for her by luck - it's not about a random stunt, it's abt understanding the song and what you want to convey for the public. Unfortunatelly, people couldn't see past the rose petals.

You're right about Season 8 feeling tonally more natural than the seasons that came after. It really does feel like somehow Seasons 8 and 7 were switched, with Season 8 (and to an extent AS2) feeling like leftover Golden Era and Season 7 feeling tonally more in line with the VH1 era that followed (VH1 era 0.5, if you will).

No I agree because it’s all part of the globalification of the show. RuPaul may not have originally cast cisgender women etc, but now inclusivity is too important for the show’s longevity to be disregarded. It really diversifies the cast, giving appeal to a wider audience who may not have seen themselves in the original casts, plus gives RuPaul himself brownie points with the LGBTQ community. Awesome analysis. Having joined at season 9, I wasn't ever really aware of the distiction between seasons 4-6 and 7-8, and what a huge shot in the arm All Stars 2 was for the entire franchise, not just the All Stars concept. At some point, the "Meta Era" of Drag Race also started. New queens come in with full catch phrases and merch ideas, they make references to cuts and editing *while filming* and are hyper focused on how they will be portrayed.

As an aside, I know we all hate the constant reveals these days and everyone trying to top the untoppable and emotionally impactful reveal Sasha Velour did but I think I know exactly why so many people try to re-create that magic and fail. They don't realize that the key element of her reveal was the emotion. Girl looked like she was screeching the lyrics and would legit die if she didn't get her message across. The props went with the story she was selling, and that's what these new reveals are missing.

Speaking of Dragula, it's really interesting how Dragula is almost having the same journey as drag race with season 4 feeling like the start of a new "golden" era of the show with noticeable success and traction that the drag race franchise has had at the same time

season 14 is almost certainly gonna be the start of a new era. the budget is obviously really high, the use of a talent show right off the bat (first time doing a talent show in a mainline season instead of an all stars season, i believe), and maybe whatever the chocolate bar twist is gonna be. hopefully we see overproduction go into things likes budget and doing whatever they can to make each individual queen shine, rather than overproduction into unfair edits or riggory.

Great video! Very interesting. Two things that could have been addressed more are: 1. The obvious change in the demographic, and by that I mean the age and gender of the average viewer. People that watched the Golden Era aren't the same that are watching it now. And smart queens like Trixie Mattel are exactly pandering to the new demographic, and with immense success! 2. Queens are no longer sincere and genuine in anything they do, all due to production demands, potential merchandising opportunities and fear of fan reaction. Everyone has to have an entrance catchphrase, describe their drag with three words starting with the same letter and be immediately placed into a drag label box.

Season 12’s at-home lipsync where they got to pick a song and produce a whole number with sets and costumes felt really fresh and I think 14 did a version of it with the CNTs. It would be a really great way to re-introduce the finalist solo song idea from 7-8.

The only things I really hate about the Golden Era is the bigotry (misoginy, transphobia, etc.) and Santino Rice. Even with these problems, season 6 is still my favourite, I just roll eyes at the bigotry and mute when Santino is talking lol And can I say that I miss the finally format of season 7 and 8 ? I am super tired of these predicatble reveal lipsyncs, it was amazing the first time but each year it became more and more boring, I honestly didn't even watch the lipsync in season 13 and just skipped to the end beause of it.

This is very cool. I LOVE these deep dive analyses of the show. This can hopefully help production and steer the direction of Drag Race into lasting longer. I’m afraid that once we get to Season 20 that it’ll be cancelled. With consistent views, a growing budget and QUALITY television, I don’t see Drag race going anywhere.

3:42 fun fact, I worked with Scott Storey and he was apart of the team to design the new Main Stage. He said the main inspiration for the stage design was literally “budget.” The 3D ceiling tiles were a cheap way to add texture and coverage without breaking the bank and because they had practically no money (comparatively speaking), they’d why the stage turned out the way it did!

this video was so good!!! Thanks for making and posting it :) Really succinct break down of the eras. I read a comment on reddit once that the lipsync for the crown should have started and ended with s9 simply because everyone would be trying to out do Sasha Velour, and many would not come anywhere close. I also hate the 3-way finale lipsyncs because they're messy (- s10 finale was embarrassing imo), and the AS cast-voting because it means people like Manila and Shangela who should have been able to get right to the end were prevented from doing so by no fault of their own. tl;dr the format still needs some tweaking, and the producers need to cut back on the rigga morris but otherwise, if drag race carries on the way s12 and UKs2 went, it's going to be good for a long time to come !

The next era for sure is going to be "Expanding the Definition of Drag Performers" (or some more clever name). We're moving away from RuPaul's original goal of highlighting gay men and now have more genders and sexualities celebrated. UK has had a cis-gender woman and most to all seasons since 9 have included many openly trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming., and now (whether you agree with it or not) Maddy being a cis-gender man join is highlighting all the different identities and performers who are included in the Drag world. This, in my opinion, might lead to a lot more amateur drag queens (think shangela, tati, and priyanka only being in their first year of drag before being casted). ***Also I'm just highlighting the significance of Peppermint and how the conversation started. In NO WAY am I discounting previous Queens (Kylie, Monica, Gia...), I just mean when it was an conversation and topic during the show. I know previous Queens (most specifically Kylie) were not allowed or were forced to stop taking their hormones/pause transitioning.

I know I'm pretty late but the early seasons really showed what the general idea of what drag was at the time. Compare the runway themes from s1-s5 and the themes from s7-now. Back then almost all categories (unless it's a design a challenge or s3 but that season was made for a concept-fashion type of queen to win) , the themes were all like "Movie Premiere Glam", "Fashionable Executive Realness" or "Girly Girl Couture". Now from more recent seasons, we got categories like Haute Pockets, Panto Dame or Death Becomes Her. I feel like with the more open fanbase after s6, I feel the show itself became a slightly a bit more inclusive to more complex themes for newer drag artists to appeal to newer fans.
