I wonder why we haven't been taught what the pH scale actually is at school. All we were ever told about it was that it is a way to measure acidity. Thank you Khan!

Im just wondering why we can assune that the base is log10? Is it just universal in chemistry or what?

Markus Clark Any log you use will grow at essentially the same rate, just multiplied by a constant.So it shouldn't really matter which log is used as we dont really care about a constant factor.Thus chemists just go for the log which is most familiar to us which is log10

@Soo Cute Captain here, so pH basically stands for power of Hydrogen as in it cant really be defined as a good or bad thing. Your question could be "anologically metaphorised" to be asking "is cm a good thing or not" Its a unit of measurement. Similar to how cm would be for length, pH is for the concentration of positive Hydrogen ions in the solution/ liquid. As for if Hydrogen ion is good for your body, I wouldn't have much idea on it but things like Potassium ions and Sodium ions are good for your nervous system since they act as catalysts. But anything in excess is bad for you so.... Besides, if you were to drink normal water spiced somehow with Hydrogen ions, it would merely turn that acidic and if in a extremely high concentration, potentially harm you.
