Yeah, bands like Tool (kind of simple), Deftones, and Gojira who mainly have riffs and no guitar soloing like some "flashy" bands make more of their stuff more memorable/catchy for me than some bands with more typically more technical guitar players. Also, for me it's mainly whats played overall and the tones, not the speed since I like many genres and types of metal.

I've been learning to play guitar the past 3 months and this is one of the first riffs i learned. The notes played together sounds bizzarre but the more i listen and play it the more badass it sounds. So simple but kickass

Keep learning this and practice more, I'm learning too, the dissonant side of things will be with us all the way just gotta learn all the standard stuff first. Music alphabet and all that jazz. Then comes the DISSONANCE.

In my opinion, this was some of Deftones' best work. Stephen Carpenter's riffing leaps straight through the mix and rips your face off whilst staying simple enough to not be overly obtrusive. When accompanied by the drums, you can hear two great but basic ideas coming together to create an incredibly powerful but balanced sound that hits you like a migraine. The simplicity allows enough room for the song to retain their signature uneasy sound whilst commanding you to break your neck on it's undeniable groove.

Deftones needs his structural, less is more riffs for chino to let his creativity out without it going chaotic. He's not a guitar god but he's extremely good at his thing, and he's doing exactly what he's trying to do
