A comment to all talking about filing and dull chains: These saws are historical relics, kept going just for show. Many have old very worn chains of kinds not available anymore. Also the old two man saws generally have very low chainspeed and the chains from that time were in no way as efficient as modern saw chains. These saws are run just for fun and show a few times a year, it is no cutting competition, just a reminder of what saws were like in the older days. Besides, these logs are Swedish Elm, it is very hard wood to cut.

Like my old boss would say, "I'm not paying you to bitch about blade sharpness, if you don't like it go work somewhere else."
@totteni9 жыл бұрын
***** Few of the oldie chains are of pitches and gagues that are available now, and many of them are proprietary design. Also you miss the point, these are museum items and most collectors want them to be as original as possible. They are for show, not for cutting efficiency.

***** I have a '47 Lombard two man saw,, the only place I have been able to find a chain that works on it is at one of the farm machinery dealers. The chains off of some of the combines cutting heads work pretty well. Size is subjective, length or girth. While my chains aren't very long they are very heavy/large.
@vaselivitch9 жыл бұрын
totteni imagine if these saw designs where built to modern standers.

By the way,,,, anyone interested in buying a '47 Lombard two man chainsaw? Very big/heavy saw, 7hp motor. Send me a message. We call it "The widow maker".

The are a few dozen old pioneer and mculloch two man saws here on Vancouver Island, just between two sources I know. A few of them running and at least a dozen original chains, some in good condition. If you're looking for parts to put together you could try calling around here. There was lots of big wood harvested around here in the time those machines were in use. A big pile used to be on display at Roberts Lake and were moved to Port McNeill in about 1995. At least six saws from the one display, two of them two man saws, complete and working.

As a kid, we had a neighbor who used a saw like the one with the circular blade. OSHA would have fallen to the ground and clutched their chest. This saw looked like it could wipe out families in the next country. It made me thankful for our two man Bucky tooth.

What was the advantage of having a Wankel engine in the Dolmar KMS-4 chainsaw? Less vibration?

@GarnettM12 жыл бұрын
That wood must be HARD AS HECK.
@totteni12 жыл бұрын
Yes it is very hard, Swedish Elm. And many of the saws, especially the big oldies have old chains that are not easy to replace with something better. Also those old gear drive saws have often less than a third of the chain speed of a modern saw. So some others here who talked about sharpening and such, this is just for fun and show, driving som oldies once or twice a year, mostly with the old chains they have. Did not cut much faster with new chains either.

i not a dull chain old saws were much slower than modern ones. i have homelite from the 70s it is slow by today's standards not to mention manual chain oiler
@JustineBieberxoxo11 жыл бұрын
I decided it would make a nice case for a little thing I made, but the expected 2 hours of work turned into 48 hours total of grinding away. It was then that I found out that nice looking wood was actually Jarrah, tropical hardwood, used mainly for flooring. Never thought it would be that hard.

I don't know if they're still used. The U.S. combat engineers had a two man air driven chain saw. I'm talking serious tree felling. Fast!
@totteni10 жыл бұрын
None of the saws in this video are used professionally today. Electrical or pneumatic two man saws are sparsely still in use in industry, never in forestry.

@jeffleonard87888 жыл бұрын
that sally saw thingy needs a sharper blade or more horsepower or something. thats a terrific idea but theres some design issues i think. a circular saw which is basically the same design cuts thru things almost as fast as you can push it. id say this thing could do the same with a little more designing.
@jeffleonard87888 жыл бұрын
+jeff leonard and yes i know the circular saw is only cutting thru like 2 inches of wood instead of 10...........but this sally saw wasnt even moving at one point thru that log.
@totteni8 жыл бұрын
+jeff leonard Right, it ran poorly at that occasion. I saw him use it a year later, better sharpened and running better. Cut much better then but still far from the cutting speed of a chainsaw of about the same power. Think there is a big problem designing the blade guides to keep the blade really stable and that's one reason it does not use higher blade speed.

@totteni14 жыл бұрын
@MrDanoconnor Well, luckily he's a very kind fellah! Those 2-mans are impressive, but not that efficient, have to low chainspeed, generally. And they are heavy, it's not for the weak boys carrying those around in the woods. Still very nice to see that the oldies can do work.

Years ago pop had been given a McCollach saw that had a 5-6 ft bar and 2 cyl. start it with one then close the compression release to run in 2 cyl. man that thing was heavy but it thru shavings bigtime had big teeth -It was made for walking the full length of the Ceder logs ,It would do not bad here I think .

@surrynet Some of the real old ones had not chains in perfect shape, very hard to find replacement for many old chains. But the wood was also very hard, elm which is quite resistant to being cut.

Yes, I would believe less vibration was a main factor, fast acceleration and high revs also. But the Wankel never made it in big scale, was to unreliable and not durable. Especially the internal sealings had big problems to last.

What no All Saw? I have a All Saw=no chain....they have a reciprocating blade under a bar, and a Sacs engine. Still runs, but is too dull for practical use. Not going to sharpen, not sure there are any parts for it anywhere.

Some say older is vetter. Not so with chainsaws, fish, and bowstrings. I do like old handtools. My blacksmith hammer is from around the 1880s and kicks all sorts of but. Not a dimple from 2 years of pounding on hot metal and man can it move that metal. I got a hammer from a company that shal not be named but rymes with ranards and its face developed a bevel after a few weeks. Any hammer you get at a big box store will do the same.

I understand being unwilling to wreck an irreplaceable chain or blade by overzealous sharpening but, even run a couple times a year, they will last much longer and safer if they are carefully sharpened. Some of those cuts were extremely unsafe and it's only a matter of time before someone is hurt when a saw fails because it's trying to wear through a log by friction alone. There's really no good reason to run a collector's item that is not maintained in good running order. It's like driving a Shelby Cobra with no brake fluid because you are afraid you will spill it on the paint.
