My beautiful wolfdog Mr Blue died of Degenerative Myelopathy & I'm devastated, but through this pain I've created a full guide to what to expect from Degenerative Myelopathy from birth to death so that we can help others suffering with this help their dogs more from how to choose a wheelchair, to how to help with loss of bowel movements to knowing when it is time to put your beloved to sleep. I didn't have any online help when Mr Blue started his decline so I really hope that our heartbreak can ease other's pain x
Degenerative Myelopathy or DM is a disease affecting the spinal cord, resulting in slowly progressive hind limb weakness and paralysis. It is a disease that mainly affects The German Shepherd and Siberian Husky.

Honestly-I felt guilt when my family went through our dog withering away. The only comfort I could take was that my dog had a loving home for his lifespan. Recognize that you gave him a great life. I feel there is guilt either way whether they linger and suffer or whether you put them to rest early. You did the best you could-It's heart breaking.

Hello, I am a czechoslovakian wolfdog breeder (FCI) and I am really happy that you have made this video. All responsible breeders do DM test and also dwarf and dysplasia tests. Do not buy wolfdogs without genetic tests and without pedigree. I am sorry for your loss. I lost my czechoslovakian wolfdog last summer because of cancer. He was 12.

With the quantity of strays in the world is it perhaps not time to stop breeding dogs? My dogs - all rescues from the streets, big beautiful dogs - were utterly perfect. Why encourage more dogs into a severely overpopulated world of strays and unwanted? Particularly a wolf cross.
@graysonfister4186

@@weallmakechoices7456 It's simple, you know what you're getting with a breeder, but with a rescue dog you have no idea what you're getting mentally or genetically. In addition, if you only buy from good breeders who produce dogs ethically then there will be considerably less backyard breeders and puppy mills that produce unnecessary or unhealthy dogs

My late best friend did not have DM, and his downturn was very sudden and short. He collapsed one day, could not get up. He was panting a great deal, and he was panicking. I rushed him to the vet and they met me at my car with a gurney. I waited inside for a short time, and they came to tell me that Jack had a tumor surrounding his heart, that surgery would not save him, and that he wouldn’t get better. They administered oxygen and possibly drugs to stabilize him, and I made the decision immediately that I would not prolong his suffering for my sake. They wheeled him back in to say goodbye, but he was still panting and couldn’t lift his head. I had them administer the euthanasia drugs, and did my last hugs and kisses after he had passed. It was very peaceful. I was utterly devastated, but I knew he was in heaven, running in the field and rolling in the grass. I felt no guilt, because I knew he was happy and free. Not everyone feels the assurance I did regarding an afterlife, but that conviction gave me great peace for his sake. I have his paw print on a small necklace, and a full size one in ceramic by my bed. This was 3 years ago, two days ago now. I’m still at peace regarding my decision, though I still miss him everyday.

I lost my beautiful Bella in August and I never knew why, now I understand what happened to her. Thank you for your video. My Bella was a Husky and 3 month away from her 12th Birthday. Not a day passes I don’t miss her terribly. There will forever be a hold in my heart. I am truly sorry for your loss of Mr. Blu. Hurts my heart. I helped my sweet girl get up and walk so she could go to the bathroom. I tended to her until I had to make the choice to put her to rest. It was the worst day of my life. This video is so important. I still believe it is the ultimate act of love. Keeping them going when they have no quality of life and struggle to engage with us is driven by our own needs. They are such loyal animals they will try so hard to please, even when they are really struggling with it. Having it done at home is the best way. It's pain free and they are surrounded by love while they go to sleep. We are so blessed by having them in our lives.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my beautiful boy and companion, Capitán, a GSD, from the same terrible disease, DM. Like you, I conducted extensive research and equipped my boy with a wheelchair, anti-knuckling booties, nappies, and a carrier that helped us help him move around and take potty breaks. He was 110 pounds, a big boy, and having stairs at home became a real hurdle for him and us. I could relate to Mr. Blue’s frustation when unable to move. I also knew his mind was still very much present but his body simply gave in. We knew the time to say goodbye was near when he could no longer use his front paws to move and with every accident, he would just cry in frustration. We had a Vet come into the house on his last day. I stayed with him until the light in his eyes was no more. My heart is broken still after one year and keep his ashes close to me; somehow it comforts me. I still talk to him like I used to and will forever miss his smile. Rest in peace Capitán and Mr. Blue.

It is coming up to a year ago that I had to make a decision to help my dog cross over and stop his suffering. I look at all his photos now from those weeks before I even knew what would happen. Looking at the photos it is so clear how much he was deteriorating and I didn’t see it😢 I have no regret about this decision. He was suffering and it would be my own selfishness to not to stop it. We had it done at home in my lap and it was and is hard. We had a beautiful funeral for him and his ashes will be scattered in his favorite running space in the dunes by the beach. Thank You so much for this very informative video. I am sure so many dog lovers will be grateful. My very very sincere condolences for your loss. You did everything you could and you made the right decision to let him go.❤❤❤❤❤🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I stayed with till the very last breath he took. Something an experience I will never want to see. I look at his picture every day n I wish I have done more. I don't know how you got through this episode, it was extremely selfless of you. I felt guilty for putting both of my dogs to sleep, and I think that's only natural, but when it comes to a certain point, it is more selfish to keep them alive if they are suffering and it's the only kindness we can pay them to relieve them of their suffering. God did grant us dominion over animals, and He instructed us to treat them kindly. Letting a dog exist in misery isn't kind. You did good, even though it was so very hard. ❤️

This is why I really do want to develop a solid healthy line of wolf dogs in the future. Many of the breeds have some bad inherited issues from some of their non wolf ancestors and even some of the wolf ancestors. Beyond temperaments and the rest. I believe most dogs should be fixed for health reasons for the dog , but early testing and especially those with genetic issues. I just hope nothing like this happens to my cane corso puppy rescue. She's the result of an accidental breeding. Silly vet told the females owner to wait to fix her cause of nervousness issues and she lives near a guy with a unfixed male stud dog. But alot of cane corso breeders where I live have no concern for dog health...

In 2016 I had to put my 14 yr old shep/collie mix down from this. It was heartbreaking to watch as he became more and more disabled by this. To know how he was such an active boy, to a dog that had the life leave his eyes when he could no longer get up. I had to carry him everywhere at the end. Horrible situation, of which I had no idea this was even a thing. Thanks for bringing light to DM. In loving memory of my boy Brando.

I am so sorry that you had to go through this with Blue. Thank you so much for creating this video. Our girl, Sugar, also had degenerative myelopathy. She was around 12 years old when she died. We are so devastated after losing her 3 weeks ago today 😢 She was a Great Pyrenees that we rescued in NYC over 8 years ago. The rescue believes that she was used as a backyard breeding dog in the Southern US. Sugar’s back legs had been failing her after we had her for 7 years. We tried doggie physical therapy last summer to keep her back legs a little bit stronger for more time. For the past few months, Sugar was depressed since she was so big and it was so difficult to take her places when her hind legs didn’t work. She started not even wanting to sniff around outside. We used a special harness that helped us lift her up and carry her as best we could -she was over 100 pounds. One night three weeks ago, she got sicker really quickly and was struggling to breathe. We knew it was time. I feel guilty that she suffered for over a year with DM and we are not sure why her body shut down so fast. We don’t know if something else was going on that the vet missed. We had a very kind vet come to our home to euthanize her. It hurts so much to lose her and I cry all the time. I’m 47 now and she was my first dog (I wanted dogs since I was a little girl but just couldn’t properly care for one until in my late 30s). She was the best girl and I don’t know how I’m going to live without her but I’m working on that. Thank you for reading this and for how well you take care of your sweet pups. They are our family ❤

It breaks my heart. I hope Blue is a free soul now, free of his body and just inhibiting your beautiful aura and he'll remain by your side always ! About me, I have always remained a big fan of German Shepherds and I have always had this fear - even before I got Blue, ever since I saw a few paralysed dogs and knew how common it is - fear of them developing dysplasia or DM or something like that because in these situations you can only fear and pray as there is no way to know whether they have it or not when they are puppies. Thank you for sharing with us all your research. It will help a lot of people and dogs in need I am sure. May it eases their hard journeys and may they all "live a happy and fulfilled life "

I lost my beloved Kensi less than a month ago and I still miss her terribly. I had to let her go at the age of 10 when she had sudden internal bleeding. Turns out it was cancer. We still tried surgery but that only gave us 10 extra days together instead of a few months as predicted by the vet...euthanasia was my last act of love to her. She was suffering and there was nothing else to do. I stayed with her until the end and asked her to forgive me for not being able to save her. I feel your pain. I'm so sorry for your loss and thank you for allowing Mr Blue to educate people on DM as well as ways to help animals that are partially paralyzed to move better, remain clean and live their best lives. I have found that when I make the decision to euthanize completely about my animal's well-being and if he/she is saying "I'm ready" or "It's time" and it's not about what I want or need, then you have less doubt which reduces your feeling of guilt. For me, it really feels like I'm removing a part of myself. Then you REALLY look at your pet and open your whole heart to him/her and the answer is there.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've only had 2 dogs so far, an Alaskan husky and a GSD. My Alaskan husky passed away a year ago at 13 years old, and I'm still not over it. He didn't have DM, but he lost function in his hind legs and looked the same as the dogs in this video. However, it was due to cancer and he went downhill super fast. I never had time to try a wheelchair for him. He was a very active dog so when he couldn't run and play anymore he would cry out of frustration. He was also in a lot of pain. My regret/guilt is actually not putting him out of his misery sooner. He was clearly so miserable and ready to go and we didn't keep him around for TOO much longer but longer than we should have, to get a second opinion on bis condition. My current dog, the shepherd, was DNA tested and thankfully he is not a carrier for DM even though the person who bred his parents was unexperienced, at least he has good genetics and good hips. That's something I can be thankful for, at least. It's painful saying goodbye to all animal friends RIP Mr. Blue 😢

Ding could not walk and when he attempted too he would fall back down. I could see he was in pain and made the decision to have him euthanized, I couldn't handle hearing him yelp. As I write this I am crying as I remember the utter hopelessness of losing him and then when I had to get Elvis (staffie/lab - rescue dog) euthanized due to severe complications with his medications he had to take. I have never cried so hard and so loud as to when both my dogs passed over. I totally understand your grief and your mourning. Blessings to You and All. You are doing Angel work here on earth.

I'm so sorry for your loss, my heart breaks for you. I'm sending all the love and good vibes your way my dear friend. I lost my baby girl, my best friend to kidney disease. She was born with this as well and we had no idea until it was too late. She was only 9yrs old. I still feel guilt and resentment and I miss her everyday!

I cried so much watching this video. I have a big German shepherd and I always worry about his health because I would never be able to carry him. We do so much outside together every single day, he's so athletic and loves life and it would absolutely destroy me to see him bed bound and depressed like this poor boy was. Man life is so overwhelming with the grief we must go through.

Very accurate ,helpfully and informative video !I had to end the life of my beloved 15 year old German shepherd vito ,because his DM had progressed to the point that he lost bowel and bladder control .He seemed able to deal with his locomotion failure over his last months, but i am convinced he was greatly stressed by messing his bed uncontrollably. I tried for a week cleaning and washing him many times a day, but he just looked miserable, so decided the time was right to end his life on the farm. I felt no guilt ,just utter grief!

I had this with my little girl- but she only weighed 5.5 kg. With her wheels and me expressing her bladder and bowels, she lived happily to 15. What a touching and important account of Mr Blues life-thank you. 🐶💕💕💕💕

I do not have any dogs, though I have always wanted one. I am truly sorry to hear of Mr Blues passing. It sounds as if you gave him the best life he could have in that period and I'm sure he was very happy. He is reunited with all his siblings now, as well as Kyoshi, they will all be having a blast in doggy heaven. 🙂

I'm so so sorry for your loss. 11 Years ago I went trough the same impossible decision, my little dog had the same condition, we tried our best at the time, but wasn't enought. I still feel guilty even though I knew the vets told me it was the best decision, since then I was not able to have another dog til 2020 (8 years later) when I adopted my beautiful cross-breed. I wish and I hope you have enough strength to be able to pass that duel. I send you a virtul hug

I'm so sorry for your dear friends . Unfortunately, the most painful part of having these beautiful friends is saying goodbye to them. It's like they take a piece of your heart with them when they all go. You get a new friend instead of the piece that is gone, but it doesn't replace the one who went.

They give us so much more than we ever give them. I miss my malamute brothers every day. My Grizzly and Happy boys. I wish I knew about the adaptive tools at the end of my boys life's. And absolutely had no idea about stimulating the bowel or bladder. Now I do. Thank you. There are things in life you will never get over you just get past it. They are with you always. I am so sorry for your family's loss.

Thank you for making this video. Our German Shepherd was diagnosed with DM in April. In some ways he is very early in the disease, and in others it shows more progression. We know we are counting our time with him in days and weeks and not months or years any longer. He's made it to about 12 years old. Otherwise healthy, he was found running on the side of the highway on Christmas day in 2013 so we aren't sure exactly how old he is. Based on his size and other traits, we and the vet guessed about 9 months old, but he never got any bigger. He is a small GSD at about 60 pounds (27ish Kilos). I've been looking for videos, so we know what to expect as things continue to progress and yours is the first that took a practical look at the issue, and not such a clinical, dry angle. I'm so sorry for your loss, Mr Blue reminds me of our Rogue so much. The same life in their eyes, and smiles on their faces. Our youngest is 8 and her and Rogue love each other so much. Your son playing with Mr. Blue reminded me of how she is with him. The fact that you plan on having your dogs with you for eternity also brought me to tears. Ours will likely go with our children, as my wife and I both plan on taking our pieces with us through tattoos with their ashes mixed with the ink. Thank you again for sharing your experience, know that it has helped at least on other family be able to give their family member the best and most time possible with us.

I am so so sorry for your loss, I had a chihuahua that had to be put down due to heart disease. It wasn't picked up by the vets, we had a lovely holiday in Somerset with little Pablo and a week after we came back he started coughing, I made an appointment with the vet but he ended up collapsing later that day, he spent the entire night on oxygen and was put to sleep the next morning. He died in my arms in the car park of my vets, due to covid we couldn't go in, luckily they sorted all other appointments so we didn't have onlookers. Pablo was the first dog I've had to have put to sleep, it broke me to do it but we had no choice. You did the right thing, sometimes the right thing is the hardest thing to do.

Thank you so much for this video. I suspect my Corgi has DM. I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow to hopefully get some answers. I had high hopes he had arthritis so I could help him manage it, but after coming across DM and watching videos of other dogs with it it’s clear to me that is what my boy has. I’m so scared to lose him, but I also want him to have a full life. He’s been such a good boy.

I held my Eskimo dog Happy and looked into his eyes when he died. I told him that I would always love him and he squeezed his eyes tight and opened them twice. It was his way of saying he loved me too. I know this because he always did that when I or my partner Annette or daughter Ursula would say that to him. I still cry. The grief never goes away. I guess it's not supposed to. There's something wrong with us if we don't feel anything. And there's nothing you can do with feelings except feel them and express them.

Very brave and wonderful of you to make this. Rest now, and run free again, Mr. Blue. Both my sister and parents had to make this decision after their own dogs gradually succumbed to age and dementia... as were my parents, a few years ago. Call me a coward, but having to make decisions about another's welfare like you've had to is NOT something I can sign up for; yet found myself having to do this for my parents. Could they keep on in their own home? For how long? I will always carry the weight of my actions: I looked at the situation and considered that as a family, and certainly on my own merit, we needed major help, and they needed full time care. So I managed to find them sanctuary, and there they stayed till the end of their days. I've been told by all - from acquaintances through to Doctors involved - that I did do the right thing... It doesn't matter. Now hear this: You acted in love and compassion. Alas, how you feel about it is the price. You'll get used to that weight: you have your family around you, and many here for support - plus your pack needs its leader! And what a leader! Lady, I would NOT disagree with you on anything (and I used to work in customer services!)! Furthermore, with this one video alone, Mr Blue's life and death now have a greater meaning, don't you think?
