One thing about Goteye is this was a smart move. He made a legendary album. Even if you don't know his name you hear a track and you know it. But he went out on top, made his money, rode off into the sunset, and can live a regular life. Like if you saw him in the store. You wouldn't think "I'm looking at a multimillionaire."

yeah, gotye made that one album and then intentionally dipped the music industry entirely. i wouldn't argue he was a one-hit wonder in this case, because usually one-hit wonders try to find some ounce of success after that and only get known for one song.

One really cool thing you didn’t bring up about Gotye was the way he treats Somebody That I Used To Know. The music video on KZfaq isn’t monetized. He gets absolutely no ad revenue from it. Not only that, but he refuses to let people use the song in marketing, and he won’t license it out to any big movies. It is however perfectly OK to be used in independent works. Man found himself on top of the world, with the ability to do whatever he wanted, and instead he chose to jump off while simultaneously giving the middle finger to the music industry and everything it stands for. You couldn’t be any more cool than that if you tried.

I have found articles on him pretty interesting. He acknowledges that ‘Somebody’ is so successful that from the royalties of that song alone he is able to do what he want for the rest of his life. He loves music and being a recording artist, but he doesn’t need to be commercially successful ever again. He has an independent record label. He has played for some Australian bands. He apparently plans to release more music. But he is not driven by money or fake and that song becoming so popular set him up for a life where he doesn’t need either to pursue his interests.

When Big Day dropped, I couldn't believe it so much that I kept asking people what they thought of the album. I was that far in denial that I genuinely searched for at least one positive review. Hot Showers was the only one that got a single positive review, which is like finding fully formed shit in a pool of diarrhea. I put Roo as my favorite track, but there is little substance on that album anyway.

@@DragonTamer31K The album was a big deal because Chance was riding a tsunami of creative output and publicity. His album, whether through changes in his business or changes to his attitude, failed to impress at the height of his career. I think Chance has got another really exceptional album still in him, but you can tell the battering he took from people shitting on Big Day has got him thinking twice about doing another big project also Coldplay for sure fell off hard. Viva La Vida was such a stand out album especially in the often stagnant pop genre with some really great production and guest writing from artists like Brian Eno and Jon Hopkins, and then everything after Mylo Xlyoto really leaned hard into to sugary boring pop. would love to see another video talking about that

God, his other songs are so unique. Also, listening to an album of his front to back is so worth it. Even if I still love that one big hit (why bother the name), some of the album tracks are better. If I recall correctly (feel free to fact check this) but Gotye's situation was the song that got all the buzz was from his "back catalogue" at the time. A DJ took it and "remixed" it by essentially adding like an extra hi hat or something barely noticeable a few years after he initially released the original song so Gotye was on tour promoting his new album (current to the time) at the exact moment his old song caught it's second wind as a remix. He couldn't alter his tour schedule to capitalize off the old album's hit while promoting the new album and by the time the tour ended his window kinda shrank down again.
