3 жыл бұрын

On today's episode of farming Life at La Forge, we will show you around our servicing shed, one of the old French barns on our farm. After I will show you where we are at with renovating our old french farm houses. At the end of the video Dad is dehorning our livestock, and will be explaining how it is done over here and showing you how we now do it as apposed to how we did it when we first arrived

A good tip is to cut strips of inner tube to tie around the heifers heads after dehorning. The elastic keeps it tight then easy to whip off the next day. Great video et bon courage

We always use a section of the right sized inner tube, doubled up on their head for a day or so to cut down on the bleeding. Very good looking cattle,Thanks from Manitoba,Canada.

Our local vets in Pembrokeshire use the power saw, too. An old trick is to stick broken matchsticks into any bleeding veins, which is pretty effective. But the paste is better - altho' we too end up with one-horned cows to deal with!

I bought one of those dehorners about ten years ago and do a few every year and do some for the odd neighbours I find that if you leave a good rasher of hair around the base of the horn they bleed very little and don't grow a slug not that a bit of a slug makes much odds but some that I did about ten years ago and were kept for cows grew slugs that eventually grew into their heads so I had to wire off the offending bits eventually ( I'm talking six or seven years later) . I don't remember but I think I gave about €450 for the one I got and that included the dewalt grinder, my vet gets me to do most of the sculling that he has or borrows it for some clients between us we did 237 half mad cattle for a man about five years ago injecting them was the biggest job, cows , 3 year old bullocks back to strong calves, luckily we brought our new portable crush otherwise we would probably have been broken up as the facilities were not great, my vet still laughs about it, he says that the look on my face was comical when I looked into the shed and saw what was ahead of us, needless to say he had told me that we had a few weanlings to do and maybe a cow or two. We only had to replace the blade last year when I think back to sculling cattle fifty years ago with a saw the hardship on both man and beast, it's just a pity that some guys don't dehorn calves when they are small but at least we can make it as painless and as quick as possible when we have to do the job.

Dehorning cows / heifers is nota job for the weak hearted. But sometimes it has to be done - like “dad” have done many over the years. Glad to see it’s raining there too - my farm has never been so wet. Had our first calf of 2021 yesterday - bull and because they are Salers, calved unassisted and then 12 hours later walked 1/2 mile into the buildings. She was a week early and caught us out a bit as the cows only came in of the hills today. Farming, love it or walk away. Take care

Great job! That attachment for the 9" grinder is unreal. Did your Dad make it or did he buy it somewhere? I use the wire myself an odd time but only a handful. .. I can't imagine doing 36 in one day with the wire!! 2 or 3 heavy cable ties are handy too as a tourniquet. Do ye ever bother or have to halter cattle? Sometimes cattle are quieter when cattle front and back of them and just tie them up to the crush bars or ye could tie em inside in locking barriers
