On plastic organizers: when I was growing up my dad always used to say that you didn't need more organization, you need less stuff

That does make sense but I live in a 480 sq foot apartment 1 bed 1 bath moved from a 2 bed 1.5 bath apartment w laundry room and walk in closet. I had to get rid of most of my furniture and w.o organization my new place still feels cluttered I don't have much stuff but it does need to be organized to not overwhelm the small space :)

Yes and no. Part of it is definitely declutterring, but part of it is organizing things in a manner that works for you. Let’s say my kids need a lot of drawing/crafting supplies for various projects. Since they are needed, they need to be kept neat to allow them to be actually used. So it will depend.

@@Linds-pp3lz check out the minimalist documentary. Love minimalism, saved my mental health and finances when I lived in a studio apartment. I have zero debt and a house after becoming a minimalist and following Dave Ramsey. Though... I do have a lot of cats lol

@@Carola16wanted, not needed. I was a super artistic and creative kid. My folks were against me going into the arts. So since there was a lack of art supplies, I learned to make do with what was a around, fix things, figure out how things work, etc. Your kids don't NEED art supplies, you WANT it for them and they may WANT them. If they didn't have them, they'd find other ways or use other mediums to express their creativity

In Finland literally, mineral water comes from the tap 😅 it’s safer to drink in Finland from the tap than drink bottled water from the USA 😢

I think our taxes should not only pay for clean drinking water but our water usage in general. Corporations and other companies should pay for their water usage not people/citizens.

Another big problem with pouring your acidic orange juice and coffee (And especially soda) into new containers is that the brand packaging has specialized coatings on the inside to protect the product from spoiling.

The containers shown don't make the most sense but I have been using rubbermaid pitchers for year for juice and left over coffee without any issues. Not for making stuff look pretty but because frozen concentrate or kool-aid powder requires a container

It's not only the best-before-date you lose when you transfer juice and stuff into those sensless plastic containers. You also have to drink everything in only a few days because it has already been opened. You can't really store it anymore. You don't reduce waste and you have to wash the containers every single time...

Yes and also in these kind of videos I see that the juice/coffee/whatever they pour into these containers, never fits perfectly, they always have some leftovers what do they do with those? It either goes down the drain, which should be a crime against humanity, or they have a second fridge where they put all the unaesthetic leftovers. The second is to absurd even for influencers

Thank You So Very Much. Your such a bonus ! ; We have very similar takes on things. As a life long fashion don't, you help me so much. One additional point is; the consumption of useless plastics. It is Annoying, especially when in social gatherings, I have to listen to someone blathering on about the high moral choice to be Vegan, Have and Electric Car, and all other Climate Change debate points, all the wile surrounded by their personal gross consumption All of this senseless extra plastic is not only doubling plastic & packaging consumption, it is Petroleum based. Plastic leaches into food and is toxic to our body and the environment. Want to end climate change, stop gross consumption. Gross Consumption was divided by marketing Guru's. Dull the senses, On to the next trend.... consume consume, dopamine hit, dopamine dip, dopamine hit...

It really feels like home to us, and we can't wait to remodel a bit and really make it our dream home I'm not the type to want to move every 5 years. And really is it 21 over life of a tray lasting 20 years or 21 over two weeks and then dust collecting, cause baby even cheap crappy ice trays are not worth the problems they cause, drink room temp for an authentic experience. (!) Decorate your space so that when you wakeup in one of those moods, you can still knock the vid out of the park!!

Agreed! My state government (Indiana), which is under a Republican supermajority for more than 20 years, actually was trying to declassify PFAS (the "forever" chemicals from plastics) and reclassify them as NON-toxic!! Luckily it failed, but they will try again, I know. They are literally trying to poison their own citizens here. Anyway, love ya, Nick! And Go Canada!

I am so glad you classigied the acrylic trays with "if they are durable, and you are going to use them" I was using them before they became an influencer trend to corral and contain things in my bathroom, pantry and kitchen. But I would never buy without purpose and have been known to create and replace cardboard stand ins until I find the right size and shape, sometimes for months.

For me the worst with the acrylic packaging is when people repackage their laundry detergents and cleaning chemicals into acrylic packaging! Those opaque, safety sealed containers they come in with the warning labels and poison control numbers on them are like that for a reason!

And on top of this, if you really are that person that neeed it, you could instead peel off the label, cut out the vital info to stick back onto the bottle and have your clean aesthetic. It's just not worth it for cleaning supplies, especially since some chemicals don't play well with certain packaging

If it's aesthetics that people are into, I recommend a company called CleanCult. You buy glass bottles/dispensers for all their cleaning products (really pretty and well made - choice of colors), and then you get a subscription to get the cleaning products shipped to you in recyclable packaging whenever you need it. They have all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, dish detergent, dishwasher soap, regular soap, etc. And no, I'm not an influencer. Just an actual, happy customer! / Edit: The glass bottles have silicone covers on the bottoms of them, to protect them for life. I got the periwinkle color. Check it out!

Do not get me started on opaque vs clear containers. If a container is opaque, it's probably like that because the contents should not be exposed to light! There is a special hell for people who take herbs and spices, put them in cutesy clear jars and then put them ON THE WINDOWSILL.

@@thaliacrafts407 HAHA I love it. We have a great bulk food store that packages all of their stuff in bags or plastic containers. However, they get all jumbled up in my pantry and my rack for spices, oils and such. I have to repackage them to fit or keep from getting humid. I bought Ball Mason Jars in sized that fit my pantry and cabinets (we have an old farm house) or my door hanging rack. I can reuse them, clean them and label them and refill them with what ever I need. They aren't cutsey, are a small investment, but I can use them for whatever. Bonus, everything stays behind the door unless being used so no exposure. Most of my madness is because I'm not used to living with small cabinets. Oh well.

I saw an ad recently push plastic water bottles as being the best choice for the environment. If you're going to get drinks in some sort of a container, aluminum is by far the best for the environment. Nearly all of the damage that's done from using aluminum comes from the initial mining, once it's been mined, it can be melted and remelted almost forever with very little lost in the process. There's a tiny amount of plastic on the inside, but most of it is aluminum. Each time you recycle an aluminum container the amount of damage to the environment per container reduces until it's just the literal energy to melt the container down for recycling and the energy to reform it in the desired size. Those mostly spherical cans are even more impressive in terms of the reduction in material.

Thinking of the additional amount of work it would require to stuff the fridge and then clean everything saved me. I’ve bought those acrylic organisers in charity shops because I have a very small home and everything needs organising but now way I’m spending money on all that plastic. I wish these didn’t exist but the charity shops are overflowing so I don’t feel bad about getting them there.

I have several, but we have allergies in the family, so we make our own boullion cubes in several differnt flavors and learned the hard way that we want them to look different to distiguish them. So they have a definite purpose. For flavored cubes for the summer, we usually just puree what ever fruit is close to being done and freeze it in a standard cube, first come first served and when it is gone it is gone. For us it is about reducing food waste and not triggering a severe allergy because a manufacturor put "Natural Flavors". We have also been doing it for close to 20 years...

I'm a child at heart and I have two funky ice cube trays that I got as gifts. Using them sparks joy because I like the cute shapes and it motivates me to drink more water. They also make for very cute Jello Jigglers. But you don't need 50 million of those trays.

Yep, if a couple bring you joy and you use them, then definitely keep them. Personally, I have a pair of oxo ice cube trays. They're super easy to just get a couple ice cubes out and resist leaking. I might get a 3rd just for water bottles, but I haven't yet, so I may never.

I have no plastics in my home with the exception of the framing around electronics and even there I’ve found wooden and silver frames that mask the plastic frames on my televisions an computers because I can’t stand the looks of them. Even my waste cans are wicker and the one in my kitchen is stainless steel. I just can’t stand plastic. My rugs are either natural wool or cotton. I wouldn’t tolerate synthetics.

I redid my cupboards and refrigerator with the long acrylic trays that go the whole depth of the shelves. I’ve loved it - I grouped like items together, and when I want, say, condiments, I slide the whole thing out and there they are. It really helps keep long expired items from being lost at the back of the shelves. However, this is exactly what Nick was saying was fine - I bought good quality, strong, aesthetically pleasing clear containers that increase the functionality of my shelves and drawers and have been working well for 5+ years now. I have no intention of throwing them out when they are no longer trendy and buying something else.

I have the same type of organizers in the fridge. When something leaks, so easy to cleanup! Also easy to get stuff in the back. I’ve noticed that I no longer have things stuck in the back that expires.

It helps that he believes that good interior design can be done without completely draining your bank account on luxury brands. Him being in favor of big box stores while also acknowledging buying from small businesses is a good thing is great. He's not afraid to say when you should spend a bit more money for QUALITY while also saying to save you money on things you can get for cheap.

In my pantry I use $1 plastic shoe storage boxes from Target without the lid to organize large bags of dried chiles, bottles of hot sauce etc. Its been working well for me for so many years and it's so cheap.

My fridge is organized with $1 baskets that are actually pretty heavy duty and have handles I can pull out like drawers. I have about 8 of them. Cost me $8 and tax. Had them for years now and I can wash them. I don't need to spend $25+ on per container for my fridge.

I freaking love Angry Nick. I'm an organization junkie, but I'm also super cheap. I bought a bunch of clear plastic boxes in two sizes from Target in 2002, and I am STILL using them. I have reshuffled and relabeled them over and over, occasionally acquiring a few more as I conquer additional chaos spaces in the house. Once you acquire basic clear boxes, never, NEVER throw them away.

I don’t even throw away my cardboard Amazon boxes!!!! Iffffff they are the right size. I find them to keep some rubbish trash I use once a year and wham it goes into my store room ❤ And I write what’s in it with a marker. And it solves all the problem😅

@@lakshmikrithika2521 I've done that and in the short term it works fine. The issue is that you wind up with a bunch of random box sizes that don't really stack well together. I personally just buy clear sterilite boxes in one of two sizes for pretty much everything. I still use the cardboard boxes from time to time, but over time I've been moving more and more towards the standardization and then putting items in the bins in reusable clear bags or using dividers to keep them separate. I've kept buying more and more of them and the amount of stuff that's disorganized has decreased a lot. I'll probably start date labeling the bins based on the last time that I used them and periodically going through them to see which bins I still need. It's been working quite well, but I've got ADHD and there aren't many options that genuinely work for ADDers on the market.

After working in a restaurant for years there are two fridge containers that I use at home and make sense to me: - A full size Cambro where all the defrosting meat lives - this prevents cross contamination when the packages leak - A smaller container for all the lunchmeat and cheese so I can pull out a single container when prepping a sandwich or salad instead of hunting down all the different ingredients that get scattered all over the shelf when left to their own volition

I also have a dedicated container for the sandwich toppings, makes lunch times easier, but I just put meat into a container or on a plate to defrost, don't have a dedicated container for it.

Finally someone who tells it like it is. The overconsumption not only on Tik tok but also on some YT design channels is outrageous. In what world a perfectly good couch from 3 years ago is “so dated and so old that it needs to go”? Not in the real world. As far as organizing stuff to the point of replacing every container your food comes in it is a total waste of time and if there are people who live like that they must have very boring lives. The irony is never lost on me when people say "oh my gosh this is so dated!" and then proceed to redo it with something that is clearly a trend that's going to last for maybe 5 years... and then look outdated by 2030. What matters is if you like it not if it's "on trend." Trends are fleeting, but what's your style is timeless to you, and that's what counts cause it's YOUR home and no one else's

Then it becomes obvious that the aim of the new video is to get in brand new furniture from a sponsor, but I would not had known it if I had not been "binge watching" old videos.Some of these youtubers also buy huge houses, which I understand helps their content, but it makes it look so easy to become the owner of a mansion at a young age and also so "common practice" to constantly change decor and even big furniture, which it isn't. I believe when they do these big makeovers they should point out the total cost of the furniture. And even if I could I personally wouldn't want to change my furniture every 3 years. First of all, I don't have time for that. Also, when I choose a piece I do it with intention, not just for the sake of the money but to enjoy it. Otherwise what's the point? It would be manic behavior to constantly change everything.

Love this - and if you really like sparkling water, invest in 1 (one) 5-pound CO2 bottle and a valve and you can shake your tapwater til the cows come home. That usually lasts my household (2 daily users) 6 months on a fill. No more hauling club soda/pop/water home from the store. You can use a squirt of lemon/lime or water pop flavouring you like.

You are 100% right about introducing bacteria into food when switching to the acrylic containers. I think glass would be more practical as you can actually sterilize it and are not chemicals from plastic.

Yeah, you can get glass bottles from the 70s in a similar shape (so they fit well next to each other) with a handle and colorful lids for dirt cheap at the thrift store. I'm just leaving liquids in the original packaging but hey, those are a great, pretty and sustainable option. The acrylic things looked like they could easily slip out of your hands too.

My parents do similar with glass jars and beans. They go to auctions and will pick up a lot of similar sized jars, then they use them to store beans and other dry goods- looks good on the shelves, cost very little, and will last forever.

Yes, just make sure that it's dishwasher safe for best use. Also, you can write on glass with a dry erase pen to keep track of what the thing is and the expiration date. The only real issue is that glass breaks if you drop it, so perhaps not a great option if you've got kids or are a klutz.

I gave my brother a vintage glass mug from our favorite theme park that closed years ago. I was so proud bc that mug was in pristine condition. I just used it yesterday at his house and sorrowfully asked him, you've been putting this in the dishwasher haven't you...Ah, the printing had been half washed off, sigh. If you love vintage glassware, you'd understand.

Also it might look nice on video, but in reality this acrylic stuff just looks and feels so cheap. Like you set up an aesthetically pleasing bathroom and then you put that plastic garbage under your towels? Or put all your cosmetic stuff in clear plastic drawers like the world's ugliest pharmacy? Just why? I'm not a fan of putting everything in wicker baskets or tying bows around it or stuff like that, but at least it looks nice and not like a random leftover plastic packaging that now stacks up in your bathroom.

Repacking everything in my kitchen in acrylic trays have become a game changer for me. Makes it easier to clean and grab stuff. I can see an influ3ncer saying something else is better and changing to whatever that is though. But I truly love how practical acrylic trays are. Especially acrylic lazy Susan's..and you can't go on vacation for the $43 you'd spend on trays

One place I see repackaging as useful is in the pantry. Especially with a small family size or individual as a household, buying in bulk or anything that doesn't properly re-seal can go into a container better suited for long term storage (flour, sugar, pastas, nuts, etc). Also if you have limited storage space being able to organize upwards (on taller shelves) without burying stuff under other stuff or having imminent collapse of random boxes when you open the door can be very useful. But you have to go in knowing what genuinely needs restoring in something else and have the habit of using that storage.

As a first time mom-to-be, just moved into a new place with practically no furniture, with an average income, I've realized I set my bar wayyy too high to be able to keep up with the consuming rate of influencers. Thank you for reminding us that the people we see online MAKES money by getting new things and showing them off. Meanwhile we get an echoing wallet and anxiety. NOBODY CARES ABOUT WHAT MY FRIDGE LOOKS LIKE. I DONT NEED A FIRE PLACE AND EXPENSIVE ART IN MY LIVING ROOM. I DONT NEED ACRYLIC CONTAINERS TO ORGANIZE MY DIAPER STATION. Ahhhh.... my mind can rest.. My son was born early, before my friends and family could hold a baby shower for me. Best thing that ever happened. I got some hand me downs and I went out and bought exactly what I wanted and no more. I still got a bunch of baby gifts, but most people asked me what I needed or wanted first, and the gifts were spaced out so I didn't have all Newborn clothes and then needed to get more clothes as he immediately grew out of them.. buy what you need as you need it, and that goes for the new house as well as the new person. Accept hand me downs for both as well. But only what you actually like and use. Don't feel guilty for turning down family heirlooms you hate.

Try to eliminate as much plastic out of your home as you can. Try storing items in glass. Reuse your glass jars from coffee or tomato paste or whatever. I transfer my milk into glass carafe when I bring it home because I don’t want it sitting in plastic. Plastic is so not good for your health.

The good thing about glass jars is that you can sterilise them quite easily. And I second recycling the jars you get food in, too. It's a cheap way of getting storage containers. Use jars for storing dry food, for storing dummies and teethers, for storing sweets, for storing cotton wool, for storing all sorts of bits and bobs.

I detest the taking things that come in packaging and putting them into other packaging trend. Who has the time?! I gotta go to the grocery store, unpack my groceries, put them in other things, then clean up the mess of putting a thing that came in a thing into another thing. And then I gotta wash the thing that I put the things into so I can do it all again? Oh no no no. It's an endless cycle of packing, repackaging, and washing.

Sometimes it’s necessary. Like, I get some salami and cheese slices semi regularly and they come on plastic trays with those films you’re supposed to be able to readhere. But they don’t properly. So those go into tupperware. I also have some squeeze bottles that make applying sauces and syrups easier. But milk and juice and yoghurt and tubs of spread and jars of jam and so on and so forth? Nah. What’s the point? These people are chasing the aesthetic of home made and locally sourced goods while going to the same big chain shops as the rest of us.

If fun ice helps you consume your water… I’m all for it. I know it’s something my neurodivergent community struggles with. As for the organizing, trays are a huge win for people like me… so much easier to pick up one tray off the counter to clean the countertop than a dozen bottles that yes, must sit out or I’ll forget to brush my teeth or put on moisturizer. I definitely think some content is just not for some people. I also think the internet just isn’t for some people… those who think a new storage ideal will magically change their actual problem of too much stuff and not enough space. But like, I have a clear storage container for my laundry pods. WHY? Because if I don’t, I will fail to notice when they’re getting low & then forget to buy more & then be really pissed when I can’t do laundry. It’s an accommodation for me, not aesthetic driven.

Never heard of wabi-sabi but I do you a few acrylic bins in the fridge. I prep fresh veggies fruit and load the bins up so I don’t have to dig around the fridge . It’s not that big. Makes it easier to snack healthy. We also grow most of our veg now until fall so it gives me a place where I can see what I have.

I use a few of those acrylic bins to essentially make mini drawers in the fridge. One for butter, yogurt, sour cream. One for cheeses, one for fruit. It keeps everything for being a big jumble in the fridge, it’s not for looks. I don’t invite people over to admire my fridge too often 😂

tap water all the way. For the juice cartons, in Poland you can go to a grocery store (several chains) and squeeze juice there to a bottle. This would make sense - you bring your own bottle instead of the one offered in store that you will throw away

I'll say one thing about the acrylic containers, are they practical in YOUR home. We live in London, UK and summer is notoriously known for ants. Couple years back ants managed to get into out larder and into my children's cereal boxes, I guess the honey in them attracted the ants. So I bought those acrylic cereal boxes and kept our cereals free from ants.

I have maybe a dozen of the acrylic containers in my home. Two for my pet food to keep it fresh and pest free and the rest are used to store some crafting and jewelry making supplies, and the only reason I went with them is the fact that they are clear, so it's easy to look at the bins on the shelf and see the products without having to dig through drawers or boxes. I couldn't imagine organizing my entire pantry, refrigerator, or bathroom with them, though. It just seems like both a waste of space and money.

And unlike the acrylic, I know that if you boil and sanitize the glass containers, they are going to be safe to continue to use for years without fear of any chemicals leaching into your foods as might happen with the plastics as they break down.

The only caveat to acrylic organizers/jars etc I would add: reducing the amount of advertising/bright colors can really help with relaxation/focus. This probably doesn't affect the food in the fridge, but (for example) putting your shower soaps/shampoos etc... in generic squeeze tubes can help you destress. It did for me. Not all of us are affected by our spaces in the same ways, but if making things look pretty/reducing the amount of labels and advertising in your home helps you eat/wash/relax, then go for it. It also allows you to buy in bulk, and use bit by bit, saving on money and packaging.

Tbh I cannot stand all the colored packaging and words and EVERYTHING that exists on labels. We got some blue glass pump bottles for shampoo and conditioner and I absolutely love them because it takes all the stress away from brightly colored packaging. We are way overstimulated in this day and age, I think, when it comes to advertising. I see it on KZfaq…don’t need to see it in my shower too.

I live on a farm, we always have to guard against mice. Instead of acrylic storage we use Nick's favorite - MASON JARS ;)

Same situation here - mice are bad enough without them chewing into your pantry items. I use a lot of "the good plastic" from Costco, which environmentally they are phasing out. Pretzel jars, animal cracker jars, mixed nut jars, ... Canning jars are good but not that large! These items are all in a pantry so the look doesn't matter. Degree of mouseproofness does. I haven't had actual mice in my living guarters for 4 years, but I never want them again.

Yeah. Growing up we did this too. Or any BIG jar ((like the huge pickle ones)) ... all jars were basically Washed and re used. Theres a difference when it's Necessity verses just Appearance Sake. Just the other day, we had a leak, and some of the pantry things we had here were still in bags/boxes ... those bags and boxes didn't hold up to it. It happens sometimes. But you don't necessarily need to buy a $20 jar that looks pretty... when an old pickle jar you finished eating, and cleaned completely... Works just as well AND you didn't have to pay extra for it. ((since you bought it for the pickles, not necessarily storage))

Fantastic video. I love “rant” Nick! My friend works in food packing and product safety and she told me to keep milk products fresh, only buy and store in opaque packaging. If you can see the milk the vitamins are degrading every time light hits it. So the cardboard container is best. For the summer I do make fancy ice for drinks in the pool BUT I have one large cube tray and one small/medium cube tray. I take the cubes and store them in a freezer bag, so I don’t need 10 trays 🙄

With the avian disease transferring to cows, my mom also had me switch to ultra pasteurized because its more likely that the virus is killed.

aghhh on the ice cubes! when i was listening and Nick said "you don't need cute shapes" i disagreed but then i saw the absolute nightmare of mega ice tray consumption and jesus christ. i have a big ice cube for those fancy drinks, then some star shaped ones i got at a thrift store because they make me happy. who needs a billion more? great video! love the transparency

I never thought about the "best by" dates on the packaging being lost when decanting fridge acrylics. I'm glad I never bought any of those now.

You could just use them in a reasonable period of time and you'll be fine.

@653j521 the reason why they are printed on packaging is because food safety is important. Many people travel, or work irregular schedules, or have inconsistent food purchase schedules. Also, no one cares what the inside of the fridge looks like.

Yes, the "best by"/expiration dates. Also lot #s (for recalls), nutrition info, and ingredients (especially important if you have a guest with allergies/food restrictions whi wants to know if whatever you are offering contains something they can't have).

I'm a decanter. Years ago I had a mouse that tormented me for months until I finally trapped him. Anyway I began decanting all my groceries into mouse proof containers when I walk into the house. I enjoy how tidy it looks and yes I do write the best by dates on chalkboard labels on the bottom of the container its not visible but is there. Granted I'm a single person, if I had a family and a huge pantry, I might not bother

Amen. But even in the far side of the world (South Africa) our shops all give out paper (degradable), rather than plastic, straws.

We bought a box of plastic straws for a birthday party shortly after we moved to our house in 2000. 24 years later, we're still using that same box, having only thrown out about half of them from being truly worn out. The rest get washed, dried, and reused. I like to say that these unassuming plastic straws have probably seen more actual reuse than all my friends' new metal and glass versions.

@@Kira_MartelThat’s exactly what we do. I stick them in the dishwasher after each use. They eventually wear out and split, but you can get a LOT of uses out of a “single use” plastic straw.
