The story line of English and Tamil have both impressed bcos of emotions and actors both Sean Penn and Vikram did a flawless performance touched with father daughter love. However rationally the film cannot be accepted as no father who is mentally challenged can take care of a child and a daughter. This was criticised in the American Press as well and so here too..

I am Sam ending was a joint custody between Sam and Priffece(the foster parents wishing to be adopting her). It was based on a true story. While in Deiva Thirumagal, he will send her off to the sis in law (Amala Paul) saying that you will educate and bring her up with comfort. The Hindi remake(Ajay Devgan, Sushmita Sen) of I am Sam has much similarities compared to Deiva Thirumagal. For me, the best is definitely Deiva Thirumagal and Vikram!
