Deiva Thirumagal (தெய்வத்திருமகள்) Nila First Interview
Deivathirumugal leaves you frustrated. A great central act by Vikram as a mentally challenged man with the intelligence of a six year old needed a much better film.
Director Vijay has made a name for himself in Tamil cinema as one of the better directors there but, somewhere, his work is diluted as each of his 4 films have obviously been 'inspired' - Kireedam from the old Mohanlal starrer of the same name, Poi Solla Porom from Khosla ka Ghosla, and while Madrasapattinam is a kind of Titanic meets Lagaan but overall 'original enough' and perhaps his best film, Deivathirumugal is a rehash of the Sean Penn starrer, I am Sam. And a not very good one at that.
True, the basic story is itself an emotional one with a mentally challenged man, Krishna, fighting for the custody of his 5 year old daughter, Nila, who is forcibly taken away from him and there are some truly heart-warming moments of the father and daughter together as well as those that do bring a lump to the throat when they are apart but these are not good enough to add up to a whole.
