I bet Aizawa feels especially strongly about the entrance exam, since his quirk would also be useless against the robots.

I also think they change the challenges every year. It might be canon but I'm not sure. It makes sense to me given that the UA sports Festival is bigger than the Olympics. That means the events would be well known and if they didn't change them up, I feel a super fan like Deku would have know what was coming and prepared ahead of time

The fact that Shinso's quirk could make him an absolute nightmare of a villain and yet he remains utterly determined to use it for good and to be a hero is one of the reasons why he's easily in my top 5 favorite characters, especially once we see how much he develops later in the series.

It's really admirable. He absolutely could do insane amounts of evil with his quirk. How casually could he steal literally anything? Yet he wants to do good. Selfish and evil acts would be easy, but he wants to do right by everyone. Really shows a strong moral character.

Poor Shinso. He has one of the most powerful quirks, but it isn't flashy and people immediately mistrust him. And he's self aware enough to have applied to general studies as a backup. When your weakness is people literally ignoring you, that has to suck. Poor guy has to be really lonely. And that’s why Deku not caring if he fell under brainwashing meant so much to him after the match. Deku is probably the 1st person he’s me that wasn’t actively afraid of him.

In terms of power, indeed. However, I think what is a little bit underexplored is the fact that being a hero or a professional hero for that matter requires more than raw power. It's also about being intelligent, decisive, empathetic, kind-hearted, focused on saving people and knowing the law well. They must also be able to make quick ethical decisions in dire situations, need to be able to work in teams and be ready to take charge of a situation. This is why I am also not fully onboard with this show and its rather simplistic view on heroes and villains as a black and white society rather than focused on what actions make a character a true hero or villain. Attack on Titan, FMAB and other anime explore morality more in depth and present complex characters who aren't simply 'good' or 'evil' per se. Edit: I am watching this show through this channel only and haven't watched or read any further so this is my first impression based on what is shown so far. Katsuki Bakugoo and Endeavor are the only characters so far who seem to blur the lines of heroism and villainry. I am looking forward to better story writing in future episodes when it comes to approaching morality.

The reason he sees himself as selfish here is because he is trying to get back at Shinso and take away his chance to compete because Ojiro lost HIS chance to compete. Ojiro is great in a fight, but not against every single long range speedster or defense quirk in the bracket. That’s why he dropped out. When your weakness is long ranged fighting and shields, your odds aren’t good against a bracket made of them. And the only ones that aren’t outclass him in speed like Iida, and Uraraka is literally immune to brawlers.

Shinso's story presents a very interesting perspective on yet another problem in this show's society related to not only valuing mostly physical and flashy quirks, but also assuming someone can become a villain just because their quirk isn't your typical hero stuff. It's also a really nice touch to show Deku actually relating to Shinso about someone being more 'blessed' than him considering his circumstances. The moment Shinso's class and the pro heroes validate him was also incredibly touching.

I think the question part for activating his quirk was just an error on the dub's part. Person just has to respond to him in order to activate it, doesn't have to be specifically to a question. We got to the round robin tournament bracket! Rounds 1 and 2! Now before anyone says ANYTHING about Deku's stupidity falling for the brainwashing after getting warned in advance, it should be noted just how much it is overshadowed by his level of care. Deku as I have mentioned before is an empath. We run on other's emotions Ojiro and the vice rep of Class B felt so unbelievably strongly about their own accomplishments only for them to be upset they were puppets, and Shinso turns around and says Ojiro in particular is a moron. (Won't say that Ojiro is justified entirely trying to ensure the guy who didn't let HIM compete also doesn't compete is a tad bit of a dirty move, but I get it when he was the one who actually made it on the career track.) Deku as a person naturally avoids conflict as much as possible. So for his friend to be insulted and dragged into a completely separate conflict for no reason other than to insult him is INFURIATING for Deku. Especially insulting something that he caused entirely of his own accord. It wasn't just an insult, which Deku is numb to courtesy of Bakugo, but it was one that slips through his emotional guard because he cares so much about his friends. More than himself. As for why Deku doesn't know the quirk, it's because of round 1 and 2 obviously. How would he have figured it out? Plus since it is all about showcasing quirks, my guess is they are not announced at all, and you are just trying to do what you can to be noticed. So all he could guess was from context clues how it works. And all he had was Ojiro because he was busy pulling his shenanigans right in the heat of things in round 1 and 2. Heck Tetsu's team had no clue how they lost their headband...and yet we see very blank eyes on his crew. Looks like Shinso got not just his team but another as well in rapid succession right at the end. Next is OFA. We have to ask ourselves a very simple question. WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! Deku used OFA...and someone ELSE moved his fingers. Someone within his head. 8 people appeared in the shadows of the arena. Deku is the 9th holder. If you did NOT think of the avatar state you are crazy. And I will not deny it, I consider this use of that form BETTER than that. But what exactly happened will remain a long mystery unsolved for now. But we start to scratch the surface on exactly how complex this power really is. And All-Might is ABSOLUTELY HOLDING OUT info. His explanation is no two ways about it. NOT what happened. All-Might specifically said regardless what you saw, YOU had the passion to get yourself out. But Deku's experience was NOT what he said. And when it didn't convince or settle Deku, he immediately moved to change subjects. AND seemed happy he had been present in said vision. A sense not only he, but ALSO Recovery Girl understood. So there is more to that event than meets the eye. Also one simple display of MASSIVE pain tolerance improvement after he broke free of Shinso. Not only was he pretty unbothered by his fingers breaking, but he IMMEDIATELY moved to shove Shinso out of the ring. Putting a lot of pressure on his now broken fingers in the process. Then he was PUNCHED in those fingers, then he proceeded to FULL GRIP THE GUY AND OVERHEAD SMASH HIM INTO THE GROUND. If Deku can endure that level of pain now with only slight wincing, of putting THAT MUCH PRESSURE ON SKINLESS AND NEAR BONELESS FINGERS, it makes you wonder just how far he can go when he gets SERIOUS now. Also the "trap" Bakugo was referring to was Deku playing meek and bursting out with his quirk. Seems Bakugo has decided Deku is just playing a long kind of manipulation game. Wait until Deku is over one thousand times stronger if my calculations of OFA are accurate at peak performance. Shinso is the definition of a quirk that looks bad in use. But he very much has a lot in common with Eraser Head. Great and useful quirk effect, but BADLY needs the user of the quirk to do a LOT of work to use it correctly. And Daft Punk is absolutely the perfect group to say that. (One of their big hits is "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" if you didn't know.) No I have NO IDEA why they are in that audience. But Shinso's whole character is trying to prove people wrong that he has a villainous quirk. Which he admits to himself he thinks looking at it from the outside he thinks so too. Unfortunately to best get people to talk to him, he kinda has to be a jerk like Monoma does. But he's not breaking rules. If you missed it, his quirk evolved. He doesn't need you to speak to him, but just acknowledge him. Even silent grunts can yield his way in. And Shinso calls out and says how refreshing it is for Deku to not be concerned about that to talk to him with no fear. That lack of fear alone goes to show how awesome Deku is at healing others. He reaffirms the kid's motivations to keep moving. And Shinso is ABSOLUTELY rooting for Deku now because of that kindness more than to not make him look like he performed bad against him. And of course, we have the biggest one shot in the show. No, I am NOT kidding. SO much happened in those mere frames. Sero ACTUALLY could have won. Had Todoroki not been on his tip toes, and been entirely off the ground, it was OVER for Todoroki. But no. We got COMPLETE ANNIHILATION. From his tip toes, he was able to cover more than a FOOTBALL FIELD, REACH INTO THE AUDIENCE AND SHOOT UP AT SUCH A PERFECT ANGLE IT DIDN'T HIT THE AUDIENCE OR DAMAGE THE BUILDING WHILE COMPLETELY ENCASING SERO, FREEZING OFF HIS TAPE, AND HIT MIDNIGHT WITH NOTHING BUT COLD AIR TO FREEZE HALF HER BODY SOLID. For ice to be that cold, and generate THAT level of frostbite, I should say that average frostbite occurs at -18°F after being in the cold for 30 minutes. For what happened to Midnight and Sero? Let's just multiply it by 30 to scrap the minutes...and it is already beneath ABSOLUTE ZERO IN TEMPERATURE. (Absolute Zero is -459°F...and Todoroki was at -540°F if my calculation is accurate. Which I’m pretty sure is taking into account the person isn’t wet or anything like that.) And he can control EXACTLY how much the ice covers, and how the wind blows as he does it creating a snowy wind of sorts. Which is what covered Midnight. And I am very much so LOWBALLING because he could just straight up freeze you solid, which takes open outer space 12-26 hours to do so. I can't really measure at this point, because we are already colder than the rules of NATURE will allow. How powerful is he with fire? Depends. He hasn't practiced it's use in a long time. Next episode we have the rest of the bracket!

17:07 So there's a bit of miss-translation with Shinso's quirk. It's less to do with a question like they say in the translation but it's just responding to him that initiates the brainwash. It's a basic call and response tactic. Simply the act of replying to him connects you to him. Like a game of Marco Polo. You can call out "Marco" as much as you like but if you get no response you can't do anything about it! 23:40 I think there's definitely a big difference in tone when the crowd says an empathetic "Nice try! 😆" vs the sympathetic version of the Japanese, "😅ドンマイ・・・", Which literally translates to "Don't mind..." or "It's okay don't worry about it... 😅"

You touched on a point that’s very interesting. What’s more moral? Being good when you lack the potential to do harm or evil, or having that capability and choosing not to use that power for evil. The later is. Its a concept that is also present in the Bible, a mistranslation of the phrase, “the meek shall inherit the earth.” A better translation would be instead of the word ‘meek’ would be ‘those who carry a big sword but keep it sheathed’. That phrase is about making sure to have the capability to do harm and knowing when to use it morally being the moral path. A weak person might not engage in bad behavior but it might only be because they lack the power to do. Also, when bad things do happenthey aren’t prepared to handle it and could become overwhelmed or let others down. So they aren’t necessarily moral just because they aren’t acting maliciously. Conversely, those who are strong and capable of doing harm doesn’t mean they must want to hurt people either. Those trained to fight often do so to make themselves formidable enough that it discourages fighting through intimidation.

Todoroki going ham on Sero is one of my favorite scenes of the tournament arc. Because clearly he was venting his anger from his dad by unleashing a huge attack, he didn't mean to go that hard but he couldn't control it in that moment and he knows, I think he looked sad not only because he had to use his fire to melt all the ice but he also knows he went overboard and didn't mean to.

He couldn't tho, when they were in middle school Deku could definitely not have moved Bakugo, then in high school why would he do that? I assume physical violence will get you in trouble no matter who started the verbal argument first. I really don't understand your comment.

Along with the obvious stuff, Shinsou being on the devious side and even acting like a villain isn't just "he's antagonists to the kids we're following". I feel like it's also...if people say or think or insinuate bad things about you long enough, you start to parrot and reflect that. And not just that, but maybe the easiest way to get someone to talk is to get them angry. Like engagement with a purposefully inflammatory comment or video. And "people are wary when talking to me", god wouldn't that just be exhausting? Maybe even isolating?? Just, dang, I love digging into the powers and thinking about what a char might have gone through because of their Quirk and because they live in a super-human society. I'm glad Montana really digs into the system too; not many reactors do! ^^

I like how they Show it isn’t just being quirkless that gets stereotyped but also the fact that even having a quirk can leave you typecasted (since brainwashing is seen as a villainous trait) or at a disadvantage based on the nature of the quirk and how it’s application/effects works. It would make getting in on recommendations more important for those types of quirk users since they never knew what the entrances exam entailed (Momo and Todoroki getting in on recommendations and having quirks that would’ve suited them during the entrance exam)

Deku says that Oojiro is a good guy for telling him about Shinsou's power, and that seems to be something the show wants us to think as well. But I disagree. I think it is incredibly unfair to warn him about Shinsou's powers. Remember that Shinsou also does not know what power precisely Deku has and how it works and you don't see anyone trying to warn him about how Deku's power works. It is especially true because Shinou relies on deception to utilize his powers. Third party telling Deku how to counter his power feels against good sportsmanship. Oojiro is definitely being little bit selfish. I get that he is trying to help his classmate, but he also wants to see Shinsou fail. How would you feel if you had such an important event where you can be scouted for future job and someone was working against you and giving your opponent knowledge on how to defeat you?
@aaronking5640
@aaronking5640 10 ай бұрын
Oojiro had every right to warn his friend deku considering shinso brainwashed his teammates during the calvary battle. He forfeited because of what shinso did.
@ondrejvasak1054
@ondrejvasak1054 10 ай бұрын
@@aaronking5640 I am sorry, but I can't really follow your reasoning. Did you mean that Oojiro had a right to get back at Shinsou, because he was the reason he had to forfeit? If that is what you meant, I dissagree. He forfeited out of his own volition, nobody made him and people were even trying to dissuade him from that. Now I respect his choice, but it was entirely his own decision. And I would say as soon as he decided to forfeit, he lost any right to go around telling other people how to defeat Shinsou. He is speaking in front of other people like his honor will not let him continue, because he feels he does not deserve his spot in the bracket. And immediately after that he thinks: I lost becuase of him, now I will make sure he looses too. Not very honorable. Interestingly Deku tries to do a similar thing for Uraraka two episodes later and tell her about Bakugo's weaknesses, but she refuses. She wants to win with her own strengh.

LoL Endeavor woulnt hate that Todoroki use his fire to save his friends, on the contrary, that would be on his plan of Todoroki becoming the greates hero, Montana straigh up thinks on Endeavor as a Villiain, he is a hero, a bad person but his work is as a hero.

Yeah, the whole point of his training Shoto (they're both Todoroki) is that he'll be a hero to surpass All Might, idk where she gets all her assumptions of what heroic things Endeavour would or wouldn't like Shoto to do.

I never knew if it was the pain from his broken fingers that snapped Izuku out of the mind control, or the gust of wind from using his Quirk. I mean, the wind could have broken the control before he'd even registered the pain, but they don't say, so we don't know.

Regarding Shinso’s quirk: he does not have to ask a question in order to brainwash someone (which makes his quirk even better actually)-that was just an error on the dub’s part. Shinso can literally say anything to someone and if they respond, he can brainwash them.

The reason Aizawa sympathizes with Shinzo is that his power is also not combat-oriented. Those same tests probably gave him a lot of trouble. Aizawa is correct. The system is unfair.

I get where Shinso is coming from, and I sympathize, but there are also students who didn't have flashy physical Quirks and still managed to pass the Entrance Exam. I wish we could have seen how Shinso's attempt to take the exam went. There's a certain level of physical fitness needed to become a hero, no matter what their Quirk is, and if Shinso wasn't physically strong enough to compete in the Entrance Exam, that's on him. That being said, Aizawa is right in saying that the Entrance Exam is definitely biased towards specific kinds of Quirks. And I do believe that Shinso has the potential to be a great and powerful hero.

Shinso being judged for his "villainous quirk" is sad that this exists in this universe. He was lucky to have good friends that root for him. There are more people like him in this world that were not as lucky. I love OFA lore. So excited to see Montana learn more about it.
