There will never be anything like Only Fools and Horses again. The best sitcom ever made. Just pure genius they way it was wrote by John Sullivan and acted by the cast. Couldn't have picked better actors for their roles. Just brilliant.

According to Nicholas Lyndhurst (I saw him talking about this on a documentary about Only Fools once), they literally only had ONE possible take in which to shoot this scene. Before shooting started, Ray Butt (the show's producer) took Nicholas Lyndhurst and David Jason aside and said "Right, we only have one chance at this scene. You MUST NOT mess it up, so if EITHER of you laughs when the chandelier hits the ground, I WILL SACK YOU". So, they did the scene, Nicholas Lyndhurst was up the ladder, and as the chandelier crashed down he was thinking "Don't laugh don't laugh don't laugh, PLEASE DON'T LAUGH", and he looked out the corner of his eye, and he saw Ray Butt, biting his lip, shoulders heaving, tears in his eyes as he tried desperately not to laugh. Eventually he had to stick a script in his mouth and quietly make his way off set.

I remember sitting in a good spot in the Kids Home for Orphans, when this came on every week. I would sit there with my little Feet resting on the Stool infront me. Emersing myself in the Program before I felt a hard sharp smack across my legs with a Ruler by one of the Nuns, that would bring me back to reality. If only for that one Hour, I am grateful for this Comedy, realising: "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the Stars" Oscar Wild. Such a dry sense of humour that has got me through some difficult times. It became an instrumental Tool to my Psychological Strengthening and conditioning. I always felt part of Del's Family watching this, if only for a little while. Please don't say that this Program was not real, as it was to me, and it was the closest thing I had to the latter. I remember John Sullivan telling how he got the idea for this scene from his father who told him off when he laughed because three or four men had lost their jobs. Sullivan's father used to ring him after every episode and tell him what he thought about it, after this had aired the phone rang and Sullivan was dreading picking it up he eventually did and his father said, You're right son it was funny.

You cannot help but laugh as hard nearly 40 years after this episode as when it was first shown. Truly genius, British comedy at its best. For anyone who is either too young to remember OFAH or comes from another country, there are more classic scenes like this all over youtube. OFAH is truly an institution. 25 dislikes, I really do wonder how miserable some peoples lives must be not to enjoy this.

@@jimmykray9583 LOL I don't know what state of mind I was in 5 months ago, sorry about that, but I still feel my point still stands. Comment sections on old comedies are littered with people crying over "people getting offended nowadays", "-show- would never have made it in -current year- because of people getting offended" even though it might be completely irrelevant and no one was offended. They also gloss over anything good made nowadays and act like today's entertainment is all Avengers, and that stupid conformist content just wasn't a thing back then. You have to admit this phenomenon is just annoying as the people getting offended over nothing. Just what I think about the matter.

@jaggass

Nicholas Lyndhurst told a story about that. He said that he was threatened with the sack by the director if he laughed when the Chandalier came down. The director stuffed a handkerchief in his mouth and had to leave the room after it came down followed by all of cast and crew laughing after they shot the scene. The Chandalier scene was based on a true story as John Sullivan's dad and his workmates were fitting a new heating system for a stately home and had to move some Chandaliers.They undid the wrong one and his dad got sacked.

Nicholas said that got the giggles quite alot on set and got threatened with the sack if he laughed when the Chandalier came down because the prop was very pricey and only had one shot at doing it. He also mentioned that the BBC wouldn't have bought the series as well if he scene went wrong due to them lending the money to the production company for the props. After filming the scene Nicholas went ballistic at the director.

Only Fools And Horses, Keeping Up Apperances, Fawlty Towers, On The Buses; 4 timeless classics that have and will stand the test of time because they were not only made before the world got too PC and offended by everything, but because they are genually funny. now every comedy has to have cheap repetitive gags in each episode to get everyone to watch instead of trying to come up with a new plot each time. and when each series lasts 20+ episodes and goes on for 10 seasons you just get saturated and bored, less is more and give people a chance to miss it
